SOCIAL MEDIA FOR SINGERS
Social media for singers: Social marketing is here to stay, so it is important that you are effective in the way you use your social network platform. An online community of social network users can make or break you as a singer – users can spread the word about your music, and provide and share positive feedback about your music and performances. Effective use of social network platforms ensures that with the correct marketing strategy you as a singer can help you build a positive and effective fan base.
SOCIAL MEDIA FOR SINGERS
Social media for singers must be approached in a different way than the traditional use of social networking. You are not selling yourself, you are creating relationships through communities. If people feel you are part of their community, they will support you and recommend you to their friends. It is truly word-of-mouth promoting at its best.
Ideally every singer will have a website as the hub of their social media platform, which all their social media account points towards, as that can host all of your content (music, videos, pictures and news) as there isn’t a singular social media outlet that provides this. However, as websites can be expensive, the next best thing you can do is to set up a blog on a platform such as WordPress or Tumblr. WordPress is the most popular blogging system out there, and Tumblr allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog. Much of the website's features are accessed from the "dashboard" interface, where the option to post content and posts of followed blogs appear.
Blogging is an important social media for singers as it provides your fans with an insight to your world. The overall purpose of your blog is to communicate exclusive information, ideas and subjects with your target audience, and getting your readers responding and interacting back with you.
Your blog’s other purpose is to continue interaction you started through other social media outlets like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, SoundCloud, and Reverbnation etc. If a fan likes your videos, tweets, or statuses etc, they will go out of their way to learn more about you. Therefore, you should link your blog to other social network platforms you’re using and visa versa.
Don’t delay using the power that lies in a well-developed website or blog to grow your social media for singers.
SOCIAL MEDIA FOR SINGERS – BENEFICIAL PLATFORMS
Apart from the obvious few social media platforms that all singers should be using (Facebook, Twitter and YouTube) here are some more social media platforms that singers will find beneficial:
Social media for singers - SoundCloud enables its users to upload, record, promote and share their originally-created sounds. It has the ability to allow singers to share recordings with each other, and it has transformed into a full publishing tool which also allows singers to distribute their music tracks. A key feature of SoundCloud is that it lets artists upload their music with a distinctive URL to be shared to other social network sites and streamed. This contrasts with MySpace, which hosts music only on the MySpace site. By allowing sound files to be embedded anywhere, SoundCloud can be combined with Twitter and Facebook to let members reach their audience better.
Social media for singers - Last FM is a great social network platform for everything music-related, so make sure you have an artist profile on the site! Every time a Last FM user plays tracks by your act or any similar acts, it logs it on their profile and recommends gigs, albums and artists that are similar to their library. As it links with every media player on PC, Mac, phone and tablet, it’s your chance to get heard by users that like similar artists to you.
Social media for singers - Reverbnation is a kind of ‘Facebook for singers’ – a central site for singers, venues, labels and industry professionals to collaborate and communicate. Reverbnation offers web promotion, fan-relationship management, digital distribution, and has various bolt-ons that you can use to connect to your other social media pages, such as a video player or mailing list.
Social media for singers – Instagram is an online photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, apply digital filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services, such as Facebook, Twitter. Instagram provides singers with the opportunity to engage with their fans on a purely visual level, which when you take into account the old saying ‘a picture speaks a thousand words’ is very valuable!
SOCIAL MEDIA FOR SINGERS - SYNCHRONISATION
The key to an effective social media for singers is synergy, making sure that all your profiles are the same and link up. This means having the same display pictures, backgrounds, and names for each social media profile.
Synchronizing your social media display pictures, cover photos and backgrounds, preferably using your logo as your main picture, strengthens your branding as an artist. Using the same name and sticking to it across all social media platforms increases your searchability. For example, the artist Remedysounds’ social media platforms look like this:

SOCIAL MEDIA FOR SINGERS – HOW NOT TO USE YOUR SOCIAL NETWORK PLATFORM
It is important that your behaviour on a social networking site is not viewed negatively as this will reflect on your image as a singer. Therefore try not to engage in any anti-social behaviour, or if you receive any negative posts about your music it is important that you do not engage with the poster, as a booker/label/festival organiser may be viewing your profile at the time and the last thing you want to do is damage your image as being ‘argumentative or aggressive’. Keep your posts/blogs positive and try to keep your personal life separate.
