Importance of audition song choice
Audition Song: Picking the correct audition song can define a singer, catch the attention of their audience and maximize their chance to shine. Here are the important things to take into account when making the decision!
Audition Song is an extract taken from the forthcoming book, The Secret to Success in the Music Industry!
Audition Song – Importance of Song Choice
Firstly make sure the song suits your vocal style and range. Selecting an audition song that really shows off the sweeter tone in your range is always going to show you off at your best. Working with a vocal coach can really help you establish what this is, or just keep recording yourself and evaluate. It’s pointless selecting an audition song that is going to be a challenge to sound good at either low or high notes, especially when performing and when the vocal is under pressure.
Know your voice
Knowing your voice is important so that you can access your strengths and weaknesses to ensure you know what to develop. With this knowledge it then makes it easier to know what key and range of audition song choice is best and what key to write songs in.
Pick an audition song that you can make your own, but only if it’s not too farfetched. Amongst the considerations are that it needs to be appropriate to fit your image, style and age.
Don’t pick popular songs; there are millions of songs to pick from not just the current most popular choices. No one wants to hear the same song repeated numerous times especially at an audition. In general avoid this as unless it’s vastly different to the original it’s going to be difficult to stand out.
Tips on Audition Song
Is it best to pick an audition song that will show off my vocal?
NO!! This is a really common error and is a poor reason for a song choice. Selecting an audition song just on the merits of showing off your vocal is such a common error. Don’t take on an epic, powerful song by someone like Whitney Houston or Adele as this is a huge risk and can only result in leaving a bad impression of your talent. In a pressured environment if it doesn’t sound as good as the original, people will criticise it.
Far better an idea is to pick a song that you like that will help you connect with the emotion in the song, but don’t pick an audition song just because you like it. It needs to showcase your singing abilities and your unique artistry, so if that means picking a song you don’t normally listen to, then that’s what it has to be.
A lesser point is pick something modern, or if you choose an old song put a modern twist on it; also select a song that is applicable to your age. Being different and making it you own is far more important.
You need an audition song that, if performed in front of an audience, will resonate with them so they can connect with you and the song.
Audition Song Advice
Use the resources at your fingertips
If in doubt, ask for feedback from a vocal coach or trusted friends and family. Perform the song for them, ask for their honest opinions and ask open questions. At the end of the day song choice is down to you, the singer, but constructive criticism can help you realise if the audition song is working.
You may read this repeated on a number of occasions throughout the book and I’m not going to make an apology as it’s the core to development: recording and/or filming a demo of you performing the vocal to a backing track can also help you hear your performance. You and others can analyse it and see if there are any changes you can make to make the song your chosen audition song.
And remember song choice isn’t everything; just as important is the consideration that you will also need to perform, add dynamics, engage with the audience, connect to the music and bring out the emotion of the song, otherwise the performance will be lifeless and all the hard work selecting the song choice will be partially let down.
It’s a lot to remember so that’s why it’s important to focus on the basics which all comes down to doing the hours of practice!
