Connecting emotionally to an audience.
Emotional Connection: Although your singing ability is important, performing songs that you have an emotional connection with, is even more so. The main way to win the hearts of your audience is to inspire an emotional connection to the song you are performing. Singers need to bring life to the emotion in the song and connect the audience to these emotions. Singing with feeling is essential and portraying the correct emotions of the song in your performance is critical.
Creating an Emotional Connection
Making an emotional connection is paramount for singers because it will change your creative process for the better. You want the audience to say, ‘this song touched my heart,’ meaning the audience has found an association through their memories and feelings with your performance or song.
During a vocal performance, one of the most important jobs a singer has is to inject emotion into the lyrics of their song. Learning how to embrace the wmotional connection is vital for giving your audience a convincing performance and conveying the lyrical content.
Make sure your chosen song is one you can relate to. When you can relate yourself to a song, you can easily get into the right character for the song. Capture the emotions, feel them and express through your sound and performance. Before you start, make sure you understand the lyrics and sing it like you’re telling your story. Whatever direction you take, be sure to make the song your own. This is your performance not a copy of another artists.
Hot Tip! Choose a song you care about. Caring about the meaning behind the song you are singing improves your performance as you can feel the emotional connection.
Tips on Emotional Connection
Using appropriate vocal techniques and incorporating attributes such as singing dynamics into your performance will also help you build an emotional connection with the audience. By varying the volume and tone of your voice in your performance, you can draw people in and lock their attention. Different feelings have different sounds.
Many artists experiment with different vocal qualities and changes in tone in order to learn how to add emotion or edge to their lyrics - notable examples include Adele, Bruce Springsteen and James Bay. The tone of your voice usually carries much more meaning than the words we actually say, so practising methods to vary vocal tone is a sure way to improve your overall performance and help evoke feeling to the audience.
Engaging with the audience is essential when performing on stage. It can be from simply smiling and giving eye contact to show you’re enjoying yourself, or using facial expressions to reflect the emotions of the song. It’s not all about the voice when performing; you need to be able to create audience engagement so they’re on your side. If you have a song where you can’t make use of the stage as easily, don’t forget hand gestures can help to enhance a performance. It is important to have a certain presence on stage, which lets the audience know that you are confident in your singing abilities.
If you choose the right song, it will help you to create audience engagement. If you can connect with the song emotionally you are more likely to sing from the heart, making you feel more confident and believable to the audience.
Performing with Emotional Connection
Facial expressions are a great way to help communicate emotions to your audience. Communicating emotion with your facial expressions to enhance the particular mood of the song adds dynamic and helps the create an emotional connection with the audience and your performance. It is important your facial expression matches the feeling of the song. It’s no good having a frown on your face if the song is upbeat. If your expressions aren’t matching the feeling of the song your audience will not connect to it. The most common cause of not matching facial expressions to songs is due to lack of confidence, or by not focusing on the words or timing. A good way to combat this is to practice your song in front of a mirror and find an expression that looks genuine. Eye contact is also really important to connect with your audience.
Body language is just as important, if not more so, than the ability to sing. Imagine watching a musician singing on stage, go on stage and stare at their feet as they sing their songs without moving once. Body language is a further tool in which you can convey the song to the audience. It can be as small as waving at a fan in the front row or running across the stage from side to side. Always remember when singing on stage, body language is important but it has to be fitting to the performance, don’t move just because you feel you have to.
