The importance of singers image
Singers image: As an act you have to have the whole package; right down to your style choices and social media artwork it needs to be uniform and consistent. Your singer’s image and music is core to you being successful as an act and they must therefore reflect your personality and music along with hopefully standing out. Find some tips that will help you with a singer’s image and synchronisation but be aware this isn’t an evening or two’s work - it could even take years and will constantly keep evolving.
Singers image is an extract taken from the forthcoming book, The Secret to Success in the Music Industry!
Advice for Singers Image
Your singer’s image is a way to market yourself when you’re not performing, so considering all factors of your image is vital. Ensure your style reflects your music and matches your fans' perception of what they expect your singer’s image to be. It’s also important to think about which instruments you choose to use when performing - use what suits your performance, not what you want to be seen using. Of course if you have backing musicians and/or singers you must make sure they are well considered and that they also fit with the overall image plan.
Coming up with a singer’s image and style will take time and a good way find ideas is to look at acts with similar musical tastes. Along with your own style and personality start to incorporate ideas that you are comfortable with on stage. Again the Internet and YouTube is a huge, easily accessible resource right at your fingertips.
Social media is an essential tool for a singer and their singer’s image, therefore making sure there’s some synchronisation in all of your social media platforms is important. Try not to confuse your fans by making each one of your social media platforms different. Make sure your Facebook cover photo is the same as your Twitter header, and your SoundCloud display picture is the same as your website display picture. Make sure it’s as uniform and consistent as it can be to complete the overall singer’s image.
The amount of times I’ve looked at an act’s social media and considered whether it’s actually the same act I’ve watched that evening or the day before - it’s essential it’s all the same!
Synergy and Singers Image
The same goes for your URL’s; the more synchronised they are, the easier it is to find you. We live in an instant age and if you’re difficult to find online people will be distracted and move on, thus losing you a potential fan who could have come to the next gig or shared your music to their friends. This uniformity also strengthens the brand and your singer’s image.
For example Open Mic UK use similar URLs to increase search ability so that they are easy to find. It may not always be possible to get all platforms the same but spending time to get this right from the start will be a huge benefit:
Promoting yourself is an important part of being a singer, so make sure your posters and leaflets are synchronised with your singer’s image. Making them look too varied, as mentioned, can only give room for confusion. If you have a running theme within your artwork it’s easier for everyone and also saves you spending money on different artwork. So make sure the same logo, text font, layout and picture are on your flyers, posters and your merchandise.
The best way to become an artist that has many fans is to not label yourself as a particular genre; this can sometimes alienate certain fans. By not labelling yourself you’re open to play anywhere that is credible. After you’ve played a few gigs you’ll start to realise and get a feel for who your fan base is, then you can start pin-pointing them.
Whatever you do with your singer’s image just be yourself and love what you do as passion will shine through.
