Chris Grayston initially started off as a music promoter throughout the nineties, organising tours and events across the UK and working with established acts such as, Darren Styles, Carl Cox, SL2, Andy C, Radio 1’s DJ’s Judge Jules, Spoony, Fabio and Grooverider. This culminated in the late nineties with Chris masterminding a packed Wembley for 12,000 people across three arenas, quoted as “never before have a collection of DJ’s to this calibre been under one roof.”- Mixmag. During this period, Chris was approached by one of the acts to release their tracks and this instigated the creation of his own record label Hectic Records. This evolved over a short period into four labels and consequently became one of the biggest dance labels in the country; boasting in excess of 100 single releases, over a million sales across the record label group, as well as releasing over ten compilations and albums until finally being taken over in a buyout in later years.
Additionally, Chris has also written and co-produced his own music, signing with labels across the globe such as Sony, Elap, Central Station Records (who boast Danni Minogue, DJ Sammy, Ian Van Dahl and Coolio on their books). Chris’ band Cynical Blend were signed in America with New York based label Pacific Time who released the band’s debut album Inverse catch 22 resulting in chart success around the world and one of their tracks being used for a Hollywood film track in the comedy blockbuster Grown Ups. Chris has worked with multiple acts and producers in the UK from SL2 (On a Ragga Tip) to The Wide Boys (who recently remixed Sugababes and Rihanna) and has furthermore worked on solo remix projects including a remix of Pretty green eyes which Ultrabeat took to number 2 in the National charts.
Chris is presently head of A&R at Future Music who are the main sponsors of Live and Unsigned; the largest unsigned music competition for original artists in the UK. Future Music use the competition as one of their initiatives to discover, sign and develop UK bands and artists. Future Music signed and got top 30 success with Live and Unsigned 2007 winner’s B-Kay & Kazz and have already procured a Vodafone Award for Live and Unsigned 2008 winner’s Kiddo360. Now in its fourth year, Live and Unsigned has enabled Chris and his A&R team to witness over 40,000 unsigned acts across the UK, making him one of the most intuitive and experienced talent scouts in the UK.
