Open Mic music competition Judges feedback; North East England area final Over 25's Category
The UK's largest music singing competition for singers and songwriters travelled to Dewsbury this week. The last area final for 2010 being the North East England area final were the best unsigned acts from across the North East with the regional winners from Newcastle, Sheffield and Cleakheaton all competing in a bid to make it to the grand final at the O2 in London.
Here the judges give us some feedback from the event, but remember it could all change at the grand final. Those who didn’t make it through on the day there is one more opportunity to make the O2 with the Wildcard vote; www.openmicuk.co.uk/national_vote
Views expressed by Judges are opinions and subjective to that particular Judge panel and in no way reflect the views of Open mic UK but are published with a view to be positive and beneficial to the performing act’s so they may take on board with a view to helping them.
Judges Singer songwriter Bob Young, Real radio’s Guy Harris, celebrity Judge formerly with another level Dane Bowers, professional singer Karen Corson and Future Music’s Chris Grayston.
Over 25's age category
Mique; Beautiful soulful voice with an infectious smile and good stage presence, more energy needed however.
Tracey; Needs more conviction and power in the vocals, much less distracting performance than the regional finals.
Danny Blockley; Good performance, unique voice and good instrumental skills. Preferred original song to the cover performance.
Kathryn Wales; Competent performance but why perform with the stall? It just made it a restrictive performance.
Katy Haymer; A hard song choice but not a terribly exciting performance needed more expression.
J Saverio; Needs to watch tuning to control the voice better which was slightly off key through most of the performance of the first song.
Chantelle Nicole; Nice soulful vocals on first song choice but needed a hook on the original something to make it stand out. Vocal was buried too much in the second track.
Lee Lamb; Strong vocal displayed over both song choices. Good use of the stage coming out from behind the mic.
Nikki Rogers; Voice is warbling a lot but liked the change in tempo which worked well as an idea. Dancers needed more conviction, liked the routine going down the line that worked well.
Soulful T; Very silky vocals delivered well but where was his original?
Anthonia McGoverin; Very one dimensional performance sung in the wrong key which made it dull, bring in dynamics to take the song on a journey.
Geneaology; Musically good and always give 100% but try and perform as one, work out a collective routine as messy on stage and you’ll start to crack it. Also work on dynamics and dictation.
Donna Ramsdale; Picks a song that she clearly enjoys and performs it to the max. Very enjoyable performance, stage performance and image spot on.
JB; Worked really well with dancer, nice move, watch mic control and voice sustaining all the notes.
Amanda Gallacher; Vocally strong conveyed with good emotion.
SHIMM1; Put on a good show with strong dancers, a strong performance and a good image.
Mainlines; Lovely voice sometimes facial expressions are a little harsh. Guitar playing spot on which made up a little for looking scruffy!
Jennifer Jones; Lost the pace of the song on occasions in the rapping. Singing parts sounded better than the rap. No chemistry on stage between performers which is a problem.
