Judges Feedback From The Portsmouth Live Show, 18 -25's Category
This weekend the judges were in Portsmouth! Thousands of acts entered Open Mic UK this year and some of the best unsigned acts in the country took to the stage at the Guildhall on 16.10.10 Here the judges give us some feedback from the event, but remember, it could all change at the Area Finals!
Please note: views expressed by Judges are opinions and in no way reflect the views of Open Mic UK.
Judges at Portsmouth included vocal coach Alison Kinnaird, from Vocal Tutor Amelia McCloskey, International performer and vocal coach Rosalind Fountain, Vocal coach for Igloo Music and Head of voice of Portsmouth Festival Dielle Lodrick and Future Music’s Chris Grayston.
18-25's;
Luke Upton; Looked the part, smartly dressed and a polished performance with strong connection to the audience and music. Develop facial expression.
Libbylaboo; Judges didn’t know whether it was an original or not as didn’t respond to e-mails. Performance came across rushed and hurried..slow it down. Interesting artistic ideas.
Tom Learner; Guitar playing needs to be tighter. Interesting song choice - you told the story well. Communicate with the audience a bit more.
Maja Adjoa; Good to see she made the cover her own but could have been a bit more intense to engage with the audience.Nice image but performance was a little too self indulgent.
Becki short; Needed to have more of an image than t-shirts and jeans. Think about every aspect of the performance. Think about phrasing and work on vocal technique.
Bob Fletcher; Arrangement was a bit messy and vocals and guitar seemed to fight each other for space rather than flow together. Also watch breathing. Good image but a bit rushed and all on one level.
Dani Farley; Very convincing performance rather see something not from the West end though! remember articulation is more important when singing musical theatre and be sure to support higher notes.
Danyelle and Jenna; Unfortunately they were out of tune when singing together got to be tight. looked great, have more confidence when starting your performance.
Little Faye; A very polished performance but song choice; let’s have something more contemporary like Paloma Faith. Good use of dancers very subtle but affective.Polished.
Hannah Bowers; Very distinctive voice, good idea and execution of the medley of songs. Suggest vocal training for 100% control but very confident, original performance.
Jack Turner; As we are looking for a potential recording artist not sure a comedy medley of film tracks is the best Judgement albeit entertaining. Very entertaining and funny.
Kat Perrio; Good vocals, strong performance. good use of stage.
Kelly Briggs; Needs more distinctive performance and image to make her stand out. Something to match the hair. Work a bit more on breathing in correct places.
Kieron Cox; Trouble with medley’s is it can lack connection with the music. Great voice and interesting artistic interpretation.
Luke and Samantha; Not sure of the medley as performed some songs brilliantly and others not so well. Voices go well together and very slick performance.
Nellie-Dena; Good mood and dynamics sometimes let the song run away from her. Nice image, more expression and colour needed in the voice.
Sam Gledhill; A little clumsy and didn’t feel a connection with the audience but got a good voice and can work on this along with the image and be even better. Good energy, made me want to get up and dance.
Sarah Batt; Good image and vocal. Good image and good vocals but a bit more projection in the chorus needed.
Vikki-Jo; Good song choice act the song’s emotions out more. Good voice but try and connect with the audience more.
