Under 16’s Birmingham Music Competition

Stella - Always tricky being the first of the day! Good range, pulse, structure and pitch. Sang through the nerves today. Click here for advice on how to calm nerves. Give thought as to how your image will align with your voice and style, but confident for the most part and a successful audition. Click here for the importance of image for an act and how to sing with confidence. Well done today – good luck in the show.

Isobel - Nice voice, tempo control (mostly) and consistency of phrasing. The overall delivery was tentative which affected fluency and commitment, click here for more on vocal projection. The judges were not convinced you are quite ready yet to hold a larger stage and watch high range to. Greater conviction needed today, but keep going. Some promise there. Click here for tips on how to improve vocal range.

Robyn - You are one to watch with further work and enhanced technique. Good pitch range and tone, but the performance was affected by an underlying hesitancy on this occasion, tentative also through the break and a little thin at high level. Click here for the importance of performance. This all said, secure intonation and pulse/structure overall, good potential. Click here for more on vocal dynamics.

Charlie Wood - Strong voice, good technique in the main, watch exactness of pitch and intervallic movement. Great control of acapella pule and speed. Click here for more on vocal projection. Nice natural colouring to your voice. You did well to capture the moment and space, but still scope to look as if you are in complete control. Try to develop this…. Every time you perform, perform like you are on stage click here for the importance of performance.

Abi - You settled into this delivery, becoming increasingly assured and accurate. Some nice body language enhanced the mood and communication too. Scope for greater confidence, pulse consistency and yes, the inevitable nerves did translate into some technical inconsistency in part, but you should be competing on the larger stage. Click here for the importance of eye contact and click here for more advice on the dynamics for a performance.

Lucy Parker - Nice accompaniment and beautiful original song. Click here for advice on song writing. Strong vocal command and technique. Nice storytelling style, although have a think about diction – not all words were clear today. Click here more for tips and advice on diction. Lovely vocal tone, although would be good to see a wider range and use of greater expression to showcase yourself to a greater extent, but overall all the judges liked this. Click here for more on vocal dynamics.

Amelia - Wow - 10 years old and so much promise! Lovely voice and secure pitch accuracy essentially throughout. Some stylistic expression too (try to develop this further). Click here for the importance of expression. Try also to develop your technique and experience in performance to give you greater conviction, but you have time on your side and bags of potential. Every time you perform, perform like you are on stage click here for the importance of performance. Not ready for the bigger stage just yet but you will be – keep going for sure!

Autumn - Loved your command of the room and assurance with body language and how you painted the words. Click here for how to sing with confidence. Watch low range, but nice dynamics and shaping in mid-range where you were most comfortable. Click here for more on vocal dynamics. Not every pitch exactly placed today, plus some technical slips, but commitment and good potential. A stronger act in this age group today.

India - We all liked the basis of the song and emotion in its delivery. Click here for more on expressing the emotion of the song. Great song too. This was a comfortable audition, but we are sure there is more to your voice, range and expression. Click here for advice on how to improve vocal range. The song writing competition might be the right place for the original, have a think about choice of material for the target audience, in this case showcasing you as a performer. Click here for the importance of song choice.

Laura - Great attempt, great commitment and conviction. Click here for the importance of performance. In truth there is a need for technique reinforcement for consistency of tone, balance and accuracy of pitch. Click here for vocal exercises for singers. A borderline act today, but bags of potential, and it will be interesting to see how you get on the regional final. Whatever the outcome, keep going for sure….

Erin - Some strong elements to this audition including body language, communication and song choice. Click here for the importance of image for an act and Click here for the importance of song choice. Focus on the technical elements too, e.g. keep working on diction, pitch accuracy and balance in the line. Click here more for tips and advice on diction. Sustained values not quite held with full control and head voice a little thin. There is more to come here with further work, keep going!

Imogen - Short song, generally well delivered with some stronger elements including conviction and tone. Click here for the importance of song choice. Aim to strengthen chest voice for more presence, consistent balance in the line and overall power. Click here for more on vocal projection. Technically promising, communicated relatively well, but not quite ready yet for the bigger stage. Spilt the judges!

Jenny - Wow, great material choice, great acappella, great look too! Click here for the importance of image for an act and Click here for the importance of song choice. We loved the confidence. Technically secure for the most part, creditable around the break, balance and consistency maintained nearly throughout. (Needed a little more control reaching up into head voice). You however captured and held the space. Click here for the importance of performance. Will be interesting to see how you get on in the next round.

Natalia - A challenging (but good) song choice which was well attempted and sustained with tonal control and pitch/interval accuracy throughout. Click here for the importance of song choice. Liked the use of expression, although sometimes came over a little forced. Click here for more on expressing the emotion of the song. Nice idea though - try to develop this. Split the judges a little but good to go to next round.

Jessica - An emotive piece very well delivered. You captured the mood and your vocal ability gave justice to the material. Click here for the importance of song choice. Overall, a strong performance, fully deserving of your place in the regional final. Thank you for sharing such a personal and beautiful song with us.

Birmingham Music Competition 16-20's feedback

Ruth - Nice voice and a good range, although not always quite fully in control. Click here for more on vocal dynamics. Give thought also as to how your stylistic identity aligns with the image. Click here for the importance of image for an act. Much promise however, one to watch, and a well-chosen piece for an audition. Would suit musicals in the west end.

Olivia - Liked the guitar work and the rhythmic use / phrasing. Click here more for tips and advice on diction. Watch low range and aim for greater conviction and confidence in communication. Every time you perform, perform like you are on stage click here for the importance of performance. There is more to you which did not come through today, but good body language (try to develop this) and some great vocal control in part. Click here for more on vocal projection. Scope for even more technical exactness.

Charlotte - We liked the image, this was a comfortable acapella, presented with impressive assurance. Click here for the importance of image for an act. You demonstrated a great range, technical accuracy throughout, fully deserving to go through to the regional final. A controlled performance, strong audition overall, and good luck in the next round.

Saskia - Great mature vocals in this super confident display! Click here for the importance of body language. Lovely falsetto too. The performance was established with many strong aspects in technical content and communicated convincingly. Click here for more on expressing the emotion of the song. An easy decision to go through to the next round – well done.

Keegan - You have something Keegan. We all liked the image, vocals, tone, expression, and confidence. Click here for the importance of performance. Go for it! Try to gain as much experience as you can performing in front of audiences and research the ways you can match your ability and looks with stage presence. Click here for the importance of image for an act. Will be interesting to see how you get on.

Joe Jackson - You need to be ready to play much more quickly. Twice tuning the guitar in a short audition will generally speaking, not be well received. c and click here for more on guitar dynamics. The balance of guitar and vocal made it difficult to hear your vocal too. Click here for the importance of song choice. This said, you have something, and the judges liked it, but aim for more experience and polish when showcasing your work!

Tadina - Wow, unique, and we loved it Tadina! You were confident, assured, accomplished and this came through. Every time you perform, perform like you are on stage click here for the importance of performance. Stylistic too with convincing expression at the core. You picked your material well and delivered very well, very individual too. Click here for more on connecting with your audience. An easy decision today, well done.

Georgia - Loved the interpretation, eerie, capturing mood all with nice / appropriate piano accompaniment. Click here for more on dynamics for a performance. It is difficult to be fully expressive when playing keys, and you achieved this, but moving forward you will need to align image and presence with your chosen style. Click here for the importance of image for an act. However, a good audition and good luck in next round.

Maria - A little nervous today, impacting to the point that we felt the audition was not working for you, but equally we thought there was something there, and sure enough second time you nailed it! Try and conquer the nerves as you progress on your musical journey. Click here for advice on how to calm nerves. We all do this in different ways, but as a rule you only have one opportunity to impress. Click here for breathing exercises that might help.

Olivia - Beautiful tone to your voice, a strong audition overall and it will be interesting to see how you perform on the bigger stage. Every time you perform, perform like you are on stage click here for the importance of performance. There was something a little Amy Winehouse which therefore has to be a stylistic plus, you might want to try and develop this. Give thought as to how image aligns with this identity too. Click here for the importance of image for an act

Fifi - Loved the image and sense of clearly established identity. Great modern vocal on an old classic! Click here for the importance of song choice. You needed to settle after a slightly unsteady opening but once there this was a good delivery. Click here for advice on how to calm nerves before a performance. Some inconsistencies and near exact moments too but good potential besides. A good audition today well done.

Andrea - Very composed, steady and a solid delivery. Have a think about how image will align with the vocal and style and have a think about material too.  Click here for the importance of image for an act. A little work also needed on control in higher range, but overall an able performer who should be competing in the regional final. Click here more for tips and advice on diction. Good luck

Over 21's Birmingham Audition Feedback

Antonio - Loved the image and liked the tone which suited your style. Some definite positive elements to this to build from. Do however try and engage with your audience, make more eye contact and in truth the delivery was lacking a little in energy. Click here for the importance of eye contact. Also, body language needs to be at a more established level at this stage. Click here for more advice on the dynamics for a performance.

Gabriel - Try to prepare an audition with the lyrics learned! Click here for how to prepare for an audition. Nice style of music / beat, liked the embellishment, range of expression and content was good. Click here for more on expressing the emotion of the song. The overall package unfortunately less so. Needs greater command, greater experience in performing too. Click here for the importance of performance. Keep going though, one to watch.

Joy - Lovely song choice, tasteful emotional content. Click here for the importance of song choice. Some technical development needed e.g. watch exactness of pitch and technique plus try to strengthen higher keys too, but this will be building on a strong sense of communication. Click here for vocal exercises for singers. You did well today to sing through your nerves today, unlucky at the end! Click here for advice on how to calm nerves.

Dale - Great gravelly tone, passionate performance! Click here for the importance of performance. Largely assured and communicated with a degree of command. Need to work on image and stylistic identity, but technically promising and some individuality. Click here for the importance of image for an act. Scope for further engagement with the audience too but well done overall.

Corey - Nice country twang to your tone. Vocal however needs more power and confidence! Click here for advice on how to sing with confidence. Greater composure needed overall and hold your pulse and audience. Musicality evident for sure, but tempo and assurance detracted. Click here for more on connecting with your audience. Have a think about image and identity also.

Alex - A long introduction is not a good idea on a short audition! Click here for more on how to prepare for an audition. But you nailed this performance and recovered your position well. Watch breathing in the busier parts, and you need to engage more in performance. Click here for breathing exercises that might help. Strong at what you do though Alex. Good luck in the next round.

Molly - Nice idea to give a choice of songs at the beginning but this is definitely a decision for you to showcase yourself the best way you feel you can! Click here for advice on how to prepare for an audition. You have a uniqueness and a pleasant vocal. Try to develop this with greater certainty of stylistic identity and confidence in presentation. Click here for the importance of image for an act.

Michael - Great song, a musician at heart, and this come through with expression. Click here for more on connecting with your audience. An easy decision to go through to the next round but try to give thought as your image and stylistic identity. Click here to find our advice on creating the right look as a singer. Try also to take your audience with you, a bit distant in truth. Click here for the importance of eye contact. But good promise here.

Wiyne G - Some good technical foundation to build on here, good pulse, cohesion and structure. Committed too. Great moments and some convincing use of expression, albeit a little forced at times. Click here for more on expressing the emotion of the song. Have a think about how you can align material with genre and identity. Click here for the importance of song choice. Keep performing and take some advice about stylistic direction.

Anabel - Easy decision. You need a clearer musical identify, this did not work so well, and others will be more established and have an advantage here. Click here to find our advice on creating the right look as a singer. But you have a lovely vocal. I sense there is more – give thought as to how you can find it. Good luck in the regional final and in the future. One to watch.

Derek - Despite your injured hand you played the guitar well competently well. Click here for more guitar dynamics. Vocal was nice albeit within quite a narrow range, and in truth not the best material to showcase yourself. Click here for the importance of song choice. You have something in your chosen genre though Derek. Good luck with it... keep going.

Marta - Liked the image, liked the vocal, dynamic range was good, technically there for the most part. (A little thin in parts though – try to strengthen technique). click here for more on vocal dynamics. However, clearly enough musicality there to go through to the regional final. Aim for greater confidence in presentation and assurance in communication. Click here for how to sing with confidence.

Ben - Nice style which worked for you Ben. There was much about this audition to like and we think you show promise. As with a number of acts today, give thought to image aligning with genre as an overall package, and also how you will fully communicate / engage with the audience on the bigger stage. Click here for the importance of image for an act. Every time you perform, perform like you are on stage click here for the importance of performance.

Tomas - A good attempt, but material needs more polished and thought out. Click here for tips on how to impress at an audition. Think about stage performance and technical control too. A little to rushed and dynamically narrow. Click here for more on vocal dynamics. You are good at what you do but need more range / extent of showcasing to compete. Keep at it!

Alexandra - Great material, well delivered, nice communication, and an overall sense of effortlessness! Click here for the importance of song choice. You need a clearer stylistic identity which more closely aligns with image and what you’re trying to achieve, but an easy decision. Click here for the importance of image for an act. Good luck in the regional final - will be interesting to see how you get on.

Dwain - You have something Dwain but need to work on image to successfully compete. Click here for more on vocal projection. Musically convincing, stylistically quite strong, and some overall promise here. Further work required however as an overall package. Click here for advice on how to improve vocal range. Remember to fully engage with your audience also - a bit distant in part.

Suz - Good song, easy to understand lyrics, clearly defined mood, catchy chorus, good structure, appropriate tempo, love the metaphors! Click here for more on the importance of songwriting. This is a piece clearly written from personal experience, and you deserve credit to have maintained structure / musical outcomes not just lyrical emotive content. (More control needed in delivery). Click here for more on vocal control.

Oliver - This piece works well for you Oliver. It suits you. You know your stylistic identity and performed it well. Click here for the importance of image for an act. Technically convincing at this stage, good attitude, and you were also well prepared which is always going to be favourably received. It also made it easier for you to showcase yourself today. Well done. Click here for more on performance.

Answerback - Good work guys! You need to make sure the balance of vocal/instrument is more effective (not always easy to hear). Click here for more on performing as a vocal group. You might also want to think about your performance and communication skills on stage. A bit safe in this regard, plus lacking a stylistic direction in truth, but deserving of a regional place.

Amana - Great voice and a very good audition. Really up to date sound and vocal. Have a think about your image – this won’t work for everyone. Click here for the importance of image for an act. Depends on what you are trying to achieve, but comfortably good enough to compete at the next round. Click here for more on branding.

Rich - Love it! Distinctive style, well delivered, believable lyrics. Controlled, technically promising although technique, consistency, balance, and diction not quite always there. Click here more for tips and advice on diction. However, stylistic and enough to go through well done. (Think about performing over a track without the lyrics! Click here for more on backing track
