Balham Singing Auditions: The White Eagle Club in Balham, played host to Open Mic UK's Balham’s singing auditions last weekend, where singers and songwriters came from London and its surrounding areas in an attempt to gain a place in the Open Mic UK Regional Finals!

Balham Singing Auditions - Singing Feedback

Jade Tedaldi – Good eye contact to connect us to your song - click here for the importance of eye contact. Look to push through the hook of the song (as you did towards the end of the song) and be careful not to drown out your vocals with your guitar, click here for more on guitar dynamics to be even better. The song has lots of potential so keep writing as much as you can and click here for more on writing songs with that killer song chorus. Keep working on your pitch for those high notes. Make them more dynamic to build vocal expression.

Amelia Hankin – Lovely tone, take care not to push the vocal too hard and lose your control. Take care with your breathing and adapt the song to be more comfortable for you to sing. Click here for more on performing a creative cover. Try and reach out emotionally to the essence of the song. The song was sung well, however you need to relax and pace the song and engage with the audience more.

Rebecca Barry – Good expression, click here for more on the importance of singing with emotion. Use all the tools at your disposal - move your body and use your hands to express the emotion of the song even more. A diverse vocal delivery, good facial expressions and sung with passion.

Savanna Stubbs – You always have a cool look and a lovely raspy vocal click here for more on the importance of singer's image for a singer. Commit even more to the performance, don’t be frightened to move around and use the stage even more, click here for more on stage presence. Look to use dynamics to alter the variation of the delivery. You looked nervous at times, but there is definitely potential there!

Giacamo – A lovely, natural performance, particularly the raspy top notes. Good pacing on the song, sung clearly and a good key change. Perdy Vydra – Well done for performing an original song, fantastic! I really enjoyed the delivery, you had a clear stage presence and had me feeling an emotional connection to the song. Lovely song and your vocal sounded sweet; left me wanting to hear more, hopefully you have 20-30 songs. Alani Hajithornes – Super unique vocal, maybe consider standing up to play to give yourself more movement. You have a naturally strong voice and good performance.

Cassia Easlick – You have a super vocal, we’d like to hear who you are as an individual - so it is important you perform covers as creatively as possible, don’t try to mimic anyone else’s voice - click here for more on performing a creative cover. Kaitlin Roughton – You were nervous – which is normal! Look to perform as much as you can to overcome these nerves - click here for more on dealing with nerves as a singer. Never stop in a performance as it just highlights your error. Allow yourself to slow down, relax and let go; breath control with help. Vocally look to take care of your vocal, warm up properly to sing to the best of your ability, click here for more on how to warm up your vocals.

Katie Smith – You picked a hard song! It’s a big, soulful, gospel song; but your voice feels like it would be better suited to more folk song, have a look at this article to read up on the importance of song choice. You have a good tone, but you need to take care with your pitching and you could do with strengthening your vocal projection. Kathryn Horncastle – Started a little too quiet, you seemed nervous, try to find a confident pose, bring your hands down and practice more eye contact. Work on your stage presence, smile and relax!

Lauren Walker - Lovely tone, take care not to push the vocal too hard and lose your control. Click here for more on performing a creative cover. Try and reach out emotionally to the essence of the song so you can connect more with the audience. Also consider adding more dynamics to add some colour and keep the interest going throughout, click here for more on vocal dynamics. We can tell that you worked hard on your performance, just try and relax more which will allow the performance to feel more natural. However, your voice was clear and you sang well.

Tara Salerno – First impressions are very important to make us stand and pay attention; you had a strong presence and look, however the song however started off very quietly and took a while to get go going. Maybe consider a song with more impact to really grab us - click here for more importance of song choices. Also, work on diction; I struggled at times to understand what you were singing about, click here for more on diction for singers.

Sean Costello - Look to practice as much as you can to improve your confidence. You have a nice tone but you need to take care with your pitching and you could do with strengthening your projection, click here for more on vocal projection. Look to work with a vocal coach to improve on these aspects - click here for tips on picking the right singing teacher for you. I liked how you worked the stage and we can tell that you worked hard on your performance, however look to perform it with more purpose - click here for more on stage presence. No need to do too much! Let your voice settle, pace carefully and don’t rush.

Ola Popoola – I liked the originality, yet the familiarity of a cover instrumental. It was a great idea to freestyle along to a familiar song and put your own spin on it – it shows versatility and talent. However, you need to commit more to the performance and use more of the stage to bring more energy; you have a presence but you need to build your confidence - click here for more on stage presence. Maintain eye contact and project your voice.

Dominique Bacheven – It is really important to be fully prepared, learn the words! It really impacted your performance as your eyes were always down – it is important to engage with your audience. Practice and practice more, this will build your confidence. You have a strong belt in your voice, but take care with your pitching and you could do with strengthening that projection even more.
