Birmingham musicians wanted to impress: National singing competition Open Mic UK held auditions at The NEC this weekend in a search for the region’s best singers, singer-songwriters, rappers and vocalists. The Birmingham musicians wanted to impress, as with a place in the Open Mic UK 2014 Regional Finals up for grabs, the acts that auditioned had a lot to play for!
The Birmingham auditions were judged by music industry specialists who have provided music industry feedback for a selection of acts. The people the Birmingham musicians wanted to impress were Tony White from Born in a Barn Recording Studio, Paul Masters from Big City Radio, Darran Barker from DB Management and Head of Future Music Chris Grayston.

Sasha Cook – Good projection with your vocal. You gave a soulful performance.
Tanya Bhopal – Try and remain focused as you came across very nervous. Never stop or apologise as it just highlights any mistake you make. Click here to find out more about dealing with nerves.
Olivia Dragon – Take care with your diction and breathing a good vocal coach will be able to help and assist in this. Click here to see how a good vocal coach will help your performance.
Ellie Wright – Lovely tone to your vocal. The cups were a nice idea; however it’s unlikely that they will work visually on stage. Click here to see how to perform visually.
Sydney Pope – Remember to express use your body and in particular your arms. Click here to see how body language can help your performance. Remember to warm up fully as you struggled on the high notes with your breathing. Click here to see tips on how to warm up your vocals. Much better second time round you used your hands and expressed to be much improved.
Hollie Nelson – Don’t forget to perform and use your arms to express yourself in particular. Certainly want to not just have them behind your back. Good you did another song but again you didn’t express which is where you could really improve massively on. Click here for more information on stage performance and expression.
Sophie Axon – Nice vocal, always consider selecting a less popular song otherwise run the risk of someone else doing the same song and/or not standing out. Click here for the importance of song choice.
Mister Min – Diction wasn’t as clear as it could have been. Try not to perform with your hands in your pockets, click here for some tips on how to perform visually. Molly Bacite – Very strong vocals. Good projection and tone with a committed performance.
Joe Ryley – Nice guitar work and use of musical dynamic. Could have pushed the dynamics more vocally though. Click here to see how singing with emotion can help.

Cait Green – The potential is there but it’s important to remember to warm up fully as you struggled on the high notes and to keep control. Click here for the importance of warming up.
Lauren Wright – Great image. Always consider selecting a less popular song otherwise run the risk of someone else doing the same song and/or not standing out. Click here for the importance of song choice. Performance grew after a shaky start to demonstrate a lovely tone.
Jess Brookes – You seemed very nervous. Click here for tips on building your vocal confidence. Needed to commit more to the performance and you needed to perform more.
Charlotte Hurley – Lovely vocal and well projected but you were very static with your performance. Click here for tips on how to perform visually.
Megan Kelsey – Sharp and crisp guitar work which set the foundation to a cool raspy vocal for an overall enjoyable performance. Lovely song choice. A picky point is try and engage with each other as performers.
Allysia Funge - Song sounds great but with some added dynamics could really emphasis it’s emotion and be even more engaging to the audience. Click here for tips on singing with emotion.

Steed – Wow. No lack of performance here! Great projection as always.
