BIRMINGHAM SINGING CONTEST  

Birmingham Singing Contest: Music industry judges gave singers feedback at the Birmingham singing contest at The NEC in Birmingham this weekend. The Birmingham singing contest gave singers and songwriters the opportunity to gain a place in the Area Finals of Open Mic UK.

The music industry judges at the Birmingham singing contest included:

Birmingham Singing Contest - Under 16’s Feedback

Libby Ashford – Great performance! Please beware doing musical theatre does take away an element of being original. Choose a song that you can bring your own twist to, and make unique. Click here for more on performing a creative cover as a singer. Look to throw yourself more into the performance! Don’t be frightened to use the stage. Take care with your mic control to be even better on stage. Click here for more on microphone technique for singers. You have a great career ahead of you. 

Equiana – Loved that you were creative with your backing track, made it fresh and unique! You need to commit more to a performance, with the high energy song you need to use the stage! A possible addition dancers would have made it even better. You have a nice tone but take care with your tuning. A singing teacher will be able to help with your tone and overall performance. Liv – You have a lovely vocal; you have great potential! As a performance it was a little stiff. You need to look to develop your expression and emotion in your performance. Click here for more on performing on stage for singers for a few tips to be even better. Take care not to force the vocal and lose control which you did towards the end of the performance. Attend Open Mic nights and gigs to build as much confidence as you can. 

Wolfy Rider – Great performance! You have a unique style and vocals.  Great to see you have taken time on your image. You looked good! Click here for more on creating a brand. Expression wise try to convey more of the emotions of the song. Try not to purely focus on the pain and hurt, look to express optimism in your performance. Flavia – Great to see you take the microphone off the stand and work the stage, look to commit even more to the performance, really exaggerate your body movements! Vocally look to work on your projection and take care not to push too hard at the expense of control. A singing teacher will help you improve on your projection. Click here for picking the right singing teacher to be even better. Work on your overall confidence, to assist those high notes. Well done!

__clink – Lovely tone and loads of potential! You are a great singer. Song choice is everything and picking such a big number you need to do it either differently or better, you didn’t do the former and the latter is a touch ask! Choose a song that you can bring your own twist too. Click here for more on the importance of song choice. Forgetting words is not nice for any performer! You need to practice till you don’t get it wrong and it will become second nature, well done for carrying on, that was gutsy. 

Miss Myerzy – You have great vocal ability! You are very confident which is great to see. The start of your performance albeit a bit cheesy - shouting "alright Birmingham" or words to that effect. Performance lacked a bit of control and you would benefit from singing lessons to work on tone and control to be even better. Click here for tips on choosing the right singing teacher. Used the stage well just need to be careful with picking songs that show off the sweeter side of your vocal tones and don’t shout; you totally lost control at that point. 

Shiraz Hempstock – You have an amazing tone to your voice. Thought the song suited you vocally! Even better than James Arthur. Look to work on your expression to convey the emotion in the song. Attend Open Mic nights and gigs to build up your confidence even more. 

Nicole Sherwood – Make sure you get as close to that mic as you can to maximise your projection! Click here for more on microphone technique for singers.  When writing an original song, really focus on the hook. Click here for more on writing a song. You need to work a little harder on your key as you reverted to looking down at your playing, when you should be confident enough to not do this, alternatively standing tall and projecting to your crowd. Keep doing what your doing!

Saloni – You gave a great performance! Liked you plugged your Facebook page before you went on. Great self-promotion! Liked you did a mash up and gave us something different. Click here for more on performing song-mashups. Make sure you don’t shout down the mic and lose your control. A confident performance without fully committing to conveying the emotion in the song. Asking for audience performance is always a little risky. Click here more on audience engagement. Watch your jewellery as we could hear that through the mic.

Eloise – Loved your lyrics. You gave us a nice performance. Great to see you perform with an instrument! However, the ukulele is a little thin as an instrument so it needs to be considered carefully, as it only compliments certain songs. Great to see you smiling and enjoying performing, try and bring more expression to the performance. Use your face to paint a picture. Elle-kay – Your very brave to take on such a big song! Please be aware doing musical theatre does take away an element of being original. Try to bring some uniqueness to your performance. Try not to sacrifice control for power, look to work on your range and projection. More expression during your performance could be looked at to be even better. Lillianne – You have a great tone and control to your voice. Lovely sensitive performance. It lacked performance and emotion. Look to work on your expression to convey the emotion in the song. Jenna – Nice connection conveyed by you in your body language and expression. Super change in tone in your vocal, you looked like you were born to be on stage. You have a really great voice. Maybe look to write your own songs to become more of an artist. You have great potential. Take care to not force the vocal and lose your control.  

Morgan Davis – Lovely song choice! You have a good voice. It’s really important when performing with an instrument, that you check the tuning before you come on stage - just a change in temperature or banging the guitar can alter the tuning. Mea-Ellease – You have great confidence; you have a real presence on stage. We loved your image! You connected well to the song, you performed it well. You showed us great confidence. Going forward look to develop the dynamics more, it felt like your vocal were under pressure. Work on strengthening your projection! A good singing teacher will be able to assist to be even better. Isabella Keeling – Wow! Can’t believe your 10 years old! You have a great voice. We loved your smiley nature, this will engage your audience to you. Caitlin – A big voice that will develop! Look to get the microphone as close to your mouth as possible almost kissing it to maximise projection. Song choice is also very important, don’t pick a song that simply show off your vocal and put your vocal under strain. Consider choosing a song that you connect with emotionally and make it your own. LA – Great act. Lovely vocals! As a duo you need to develop the harmonies, rather than singing the same lines in sync. Click here for more on tips for music duos and groups. As performers in a group the audience would like to see a connection between you both - look at each other, a glance, a smile to show us you are together on this. You both should consider musical theatre schools.

Seren Laverack – You have an unusual tone that we loved. You have a great voice. Loved that you recorded your own backing track to make it original! You need to look at developing your expression to help convey the emotion in the song and incorporate movement both around the stage and with your body. Coco – Great image and name. We loved that you took time over this, as its massively important on becoming an artist. Click here on the importance of creating a brand as a musician. You have a nice tone and you expressed the pain in the song very well! However, it is a very popular song choice and we to see your own twist on the original. Tiegan Rose – You have a very powerful! You have great confidence as you controlled the stage. We’re not convinced it was the right song choice for you to bring out the sweeter tones in your range. Liam Price – A big voice with a nice tone that has plenty of time to develop! You have great vocal ability. Look to get the microphone as close to your mouth as possible to maximise projection. Izzy JG – You have a good voice and vocal control. Love this song choice! However, it felt slightly under pressure, maybe it was too big for you. Aiyana – You have a lovely voice and vocal control. You showed a lot of passion in a committed performance! You used the stage well by coming right to the front. Chloe Paige – Amazing! You are a great artist. Your very confident, which we enjoyed. A good song which was conveyed well, it is memorable and catchy! You held strong eye contact with your audience, which would be very engaging for them. Click here for the importance of eye contact.

Robyn Laura – A confident performer with a powerful vocal. You need to give the same care to the low notes as you do the high notes as they were a bit thin in places. Elle W – You have a lovely gentle tone to your voice, it’s very endearing. You conveyed the sensitivity and emotion of the song very well! Your expression was very good and you have a super tone to your vocal. You had a faraway look in your eye like you connected to the message in this song – like you meant every word. Eva Holmes – You looked great. You have a super tone and projection! You need to work hard at developing your stage craft, you were very much rooted to the spot. Birmingham Singing Contest - 16-20s Feedback

Rozz – You have a good voice! Although we would like to see more of an impression, we would like you to try and find your own sound. Reece McConnell - Nice tone and you expressed the pain in the song very well. It is a very popular song choice and we needed to see your own spin on the original. Make sure you always use a good quality backing track to make your performance sound more professional.

James Michael – Look to commit more to the expression and in particular, holding eye contact with your audience. Doing this will be more engaging for them. Click here for the importance of eye contact. Song was good! Despite being a little bit repetitive. Most important thing about song writing is getting the hooks and lyrics thoroughly engaging. Alesi Summer – You have a lovely tone! You used the stage well so we connected to you as a performer. A confident performance, fully committing to convey the emotion in the song. Fatuma – Your voice is very nice! You have a lovely tone but it felt like you played it safe and missed an opportunity to really climb into the song. You did give a passionate performance however it’s a very emotional song and you really need to connect and show us your connection by really embracing the song. Brandon Hill – You have a great voice and a lovely tone. Loved you told a story through your song, would have liked to heard just a bit more of a vocal hook to back up some super lyrics. Hannah Jordan – Your performance was very enjoyable and you have a lovely voice. You would really benefit from looking at your microphone technique, you are distant from the microphone and this is limiting your projection and ability to work the vocal dynamics. Cameron Westwood – You have a very good and powerful voice! Great guitar work! It was a little untidy and repetitive which meant it didn’t drive the performance as it could have. Liked you tried to make the cover your own, which is important on bringing us your originality as an artist. Ollie Smith – You have a big and very well controlled voice. You gave a very good and passionate performance with good movement! Try to think about giving us more eye contact. Carys – It was good you worked the stage! You need to show us more of you as an artist, it was too karaoke and you needed to make the song your own. Birmingham Singing Contest - Feedback for Singer's

Rachael Kennedy – You have a lovely tone and you have a lot of potential however you started in the wrong key and you suffered with tuning throughout, look to work with a good vocal coach to assist you and iron this out. Expand your projection and range will benefit you greatly. Performance wise, it was way too static, you need to convey the emotion in the song. Olly Hensby – Lovely musicianship, with the highlight being a super guitar rhythm and chord structure that kept you floating along nicely. Good movement! We liked how you used the stage. Darshae – Great to see you consider an image to stand out! In particular your different hairstyle was cool! Josh Ford – You have a lovely tone and performed a great song with really meaningful lyrics. This helped your audience to engage with you very well. It rarely sounds good playing guitar to a backing track, either go live or not, just sounds messy and cluttered. The song is a good one but you didn’t allow it to release it’s potential. Sam Clines – Your vocals are very good and you were able to really show your originality, you are very talented! Your song was quite one toned throughout the performance. Think about using a little more variety with melodies, tempo and dynamics.

Saisha Maynard – A big voice with a nice tone that will and has plenty of time to develop! Sophie Leuca – You have a lovely tone and vocals! You performed the songs very well however it would have been nice to see you engaging with your audience a little more. Lucy Stanton – You have a lovely tone however your vocals were not consistent throughout the performance. You have great stage confidence and interacted well with your audience. Birmingham Singing Contest - 21 and Over Feedback

Steve Pearce - You performed a really nice chilled out song with a good hook. Try to work on the dynamics a bit more to help enhance the performance, especially in the hook. You used very good eye contact which really helped your audience to connect to you and your message. Your standard of playing was very high. To improve further look to develop your song writing.

Fay Bromley – You have a lovely and very powerful voice. To improve your performance on stage look to get the microphone closer to your mouth to really gain the best sound. Click here for more on performing on stage for singers. Song choice is very important. Be careful not to pick songs just to show off your vocals that may put your vocals under strain. Daniel Gates – You have very good skills on vocals and piano. It was great that you really made the song your own. Performing a creative cover is very important to show your originality and what you could potentially be as an artist. You were able to connect emotionally to the song and your audience by using good eye contact. This really helped your audience to connect to you and the song too. 

Demi – You have a lovely tone to your voice. Practising performing more will help you to develop your stage craft. Song choice is also very important. Make sure you choose a song that you are able to connect emotionally with. This will really help to enhance your performance. Dean Hall – You have really great, soulful vocal and performed very well. Try to be even more original with your song choice and performance. Click here for more on performing a creative cover as a singer. Think about playing around more with the chord structure to make the backing sound a little more interesting. To improve further think about altering the dynamics and tempo of your performance. This will help to enhance your performance and entice your audience. Jamie Connolly – Your performance was very strong. You used great lyrics. Performing to a backing track can be difficult. There wasn’t too much of the backing track so this wasn’t too much of an issue, just be careful not to sound a little out of tune or cluttered. The most important thing for you to do in order to improve is to develop the dynamics throughout your performance. This will really help drive through the chorus. Hands Down JAC – You have really great tone to your vocals. The guitar playing was to a very high standard. Adding a double bass would really help to enhance your performance and stage presence. This will also add to the originality of your performance. You performed very well together, it was good to see you looking across and reaching out to each other to help with the message of the song. Jane H – It was great to see the use of a violin to help bring your own mood to your performance. It also helped to bring originality to the performance. You have really nice smooth vocals and used great microphone technique. Perhaps think about creating a catchier hook to enhance your performance and to bring it even more potential. Tata – You have a lovely tone and vocals however at times you can sound a little too high pitched. The falsetto was lovely to start with but did get a little too much. You had a lovely song choice but make sure to select a song that really suits your vocals and that will help you to show off your vocal potential. Bobbie Lord - You have a very nice voice and a lovely tone however it would have been nice to see more of an adventurous melody line. Perhaps choosing a catchier song and working on varying dynamics throughout your song would have helped to enhance your performance. Think about using some subtle pauses and changes in tempo and projection to really help bring this song to it’s potential. Harmony Duo – You performed lovely harmonies which is very important as a group! Your vocals complimented each other very well. Click here for tips on singing in a group. Perhaps think about really building towards the end of the song to help to enhance the performance and to end on a high. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Be careful not to fall behind the beat at the beginning as this could potentially affect your whole performance. Look at improving your microphone technique. Abacus – You have great vocals that work very well together however be careful not to become out of time with each other. Make sure not to look a little bored on stage. Try to use more energy and express a little more emotion as this will really help you to enhance your performance and help to connect more to your audience. Saliana – Your vocals are unique and really suit your style of song. You have a really great image. Look to be more mobile, think about taking the microphone off the stand and move around a stage a little more. Kate Fenwick – Your performance was very enjoyable and you really made the song your own. This is very important was it helps to make you and your performance more original and memorable. Dan O’Connor – You have a great image and used very good energy throughout your performance. This really helped you to engage with your audience. You performed very well.
