Birmingham Stage Performance Tips

The regional finals were judged by music industry specialists who have provided stage performance tips music industry feedback for each of the acts that performed. The people the Birmingham musicians wanted to impress were Tony from Born in a Barn Studio, Paul Masters from Big City Radio, Adam Cornes from ViewMyGig, Big Help Management’s Dutch Van Spall and Head of Future Music, Chris Grayston.

Birmingham’s show was rounded off by our guest acts, previous winner of TeenStar, Emily Middlemas and singer/songwriter Ben McKelvey.

Allysia – A little shakey start with the nerves, but you improved as you got going. Click here for tips on how to sing with confidence.  Nice vocal tone, but better dynamics would have given the performance greater depth, click here for advice on dynamics. Look to keep developing the guitar work as it has potential. Try and more emotion into your facial expressions as you perform; click here for tips on how to sing with facial expressions.

Steed Bennett – The boy knows how to perform, loved the confidence, however maybe too much performance detracts from the vocal performance. You’ve unfortunately not quite nailed the transition from classical to normal pop voice; perhaps it would be better to use the classical vocal more sparely. Steed really needs to pay more attention to mic control especially when projecting at your peak, click here for tips on mic control.

Molly Bache – Good backing track booming kick drum! Molly has a gorgeous vocal and great diction, you just need to start using more facial expression and learn how to convey the emotion of the song more. Click here for tips on how to sing with facial expressions and click here for singing with emotion.

Emily B – A shakey start, but you have a good commercial voice. Unfortunately the guitars didn’t work well, they need to add depth by playing different chords or you should just use one as it sounded a little messy which reflected on the act as a whole. Good use of the stage and a comfortable performance though. Lovely version of the song, but you need to think about the compliment you use as it’s not working in the current format at the moment.

Sophie Axon – Lovely tone and a good song choice for your range, use your body and facial expression to convey more emotion, click here for tips on how to sing with facial expressions. Glad you took the mic off the stand and used the stage, but when you walk around try and commit more to the performance, click here for more tips on performing a creative cover. Better dynamics would have kept us more interested throughout the performance, click here for advice on dynamics.

Finn Allen – Great energy and lots of potential, but you need to take care with the mic control, click here for tips on mic control. Really liked that you made the cover your own but better use of dynamics could have really driven the performance, click here for advice on dynamics. Great vocal definition and the rhythm was bang on! Just watch your breathing, perhaps rework the song to give you time to fill your lungs and give more emphasis to the chorus and hooks.

Will Homewood – You have a nice voice and lots of potential. Perhaps think about accessories to work as part of a stage image and branding to help you stand out from the crowd even more, click here for tips on imageThe guitar was a little out of tune try and look to develop the dynamics it was a little one dimensional, click here for advice on dynamics.

Elle May Dempsey – Unusual song choice, it was refreshing to hear, but always try and put your own spin on a cover to make it more your own, click here for more tips on performing a creative cover. Good vocals with good, clear diction, but coaching would really help you to develop further. Don’t be frightened to express the emotion of the song with your facial expression and hands which you did a bit, but try and commit even more, click here for tips on how to sing with facial expressions.

Birmingham stage performance tips – Feedback for Open Mic UK Birmingham Under 16’s Regional Finalists

Chloe-Frances – Lovely, sweet voice and good projection, just watch the high head voice phrases don’t lose vocal tone. The guitar gave it a good live feel, but a little look here and there between the performers would show more stage chemistry. Performance wise it was a little static so going forward look to move around the stage more and use more expression to back up a hugely talented vocal. Click here for tips on performing visually.

Megan Kelsey – Soulful delivery and lovely voice, there was lots of character in the vocal and you performed with conviction. It was a really good choice for you which you made your own.  Really liked the emotion of the song you expressed too. An extremely impressive performance, well done!

Mae Hill – Exceptional. A very challenging song choice which you nailed. Strong/edgy. Work that stage now! Click here for tips on performing visually. What a mature, bluesy vocal from someone so young – loved it. You’ve got soul in your veins girl!

Ellie Wright – Very, very nervous. However it didn’t affect the beautiful vocal! You need to work on your stage presence now, as you didn’t interact with the audience and looked at the floor a lot. Click here for tips on performing visually. You have a lovely voice which could shine with a bit of confidence. Click here for tips on how to sing with confidence.

Ellisha Morris – Good original song about the breakdown of friendship. Good vocal and guitar skills. Diction needs work in places. Click here for tips on diction. Well done! Be careful not the let the guitar playing get in the way of delivering the best vocal you can. Remember to engage with each other as performer - the pianist was looking across to connect.

Oliwia Dragon – Brave song choice, although it is a popular song choice which makes it difficult to stand out. Click here for advice on the importance of song choice. Watch the pitching on lower notes. Such a powerful voice. Be careful not to shout in places. You interpreted the song well. Well done!

Lauren Wright – There were some tuning issues here. You have a very strong ‘belt’. For such an upbeat song you need to move a bit more. More exposure to a live stage environment will help. It was a bit of a waster opportunity picking a song that is done so much, and it’s a song where it’s impossible to do as well as the original artist. Click here for advice on the importance of song choice and click here for advice on how to perform a creative cover.

Holly Olivia – Incredible low vocal. You have a very mature sound for someone so young. Don’t look up so high, try to relax and interact with the audience! Click here for tips on performing visually. Have confidence in your ability! Make sure you make the song your own - click here for advice on how to perform a creative cover.

Tanya Bhopal – A fun performance. Great song choice. You got the audience involved – well done! Good use of the stage. Just watch your pitching a little bit – some regular vocal coaching and regular vocal work will help with that. Click here for advice on the importance of singing lessons.

Nath Brooks – A really well-crafted performance with great dynamics and a big voice. Absolutely loved it. You are the complete package. Use the face more. Click here for advice on using facial expressions when performing. Don’t push those top notes too much. Well done!

Charlotte Hurley – Well-controlled vocal, delivered to your audience with conviction. A very emotive performance.  Gorgeous dress! Good song choice.

RHEO – There were timing issues here which were difficult to recover from. You added too much decoration and tried too hard to make it your own which over-cluttered it. You have a unique voice and beautiful tone. Work on your stage craft a little more to help draw your audience in. Click here for tips on performing visually. You looked great. Keep going!

Unscripted – Great vocals from all members. Nice harmonies and some good chemistry. Plenty of confidence. Just need to sort out the image now! Click here for advice on act image.
