BRIGHTON SINGERS WANTED TO IMPRESS AT THE OPEN MIC UK REGIONAL FINALS

Singers from Brighton wanted to impress music industry judges at the 16-20 Regional Finals!

 Brighton Singers Wanted 2

Brighton Singers Wanted: National singing competition Open Mic UK held its Regional Finals at The Hove Centre, Brighton this weekend and saw Brighton’s best singers, songwriters and solo artists take to the stage in their bids to impress a music industry judging panel and capacity crowd.

The regional finals were judged by music industry specialists who have provided stage performance tips for each of the acts that performed. The people the Brighton musicians wanted to impress were vocalist Lesley Mitchell, award winning musical director from The Theatre Workshop Marc Yarrow, singing teacher Nadia Strahan, Cameron Devlin from Hidden Cam Studios and Head of Future Music, Chris Grayston.

Brighton’s regional final was rounded off by our guest act, previous winner of Open Mic UK, Natalie Shay.

Please take the feedback on board with a view to helping in the future.

Darcy – Remember to really connect with your audience. Powerful vocal but there’s not always enough control. You didn’t make the song your own which would have showed creativity, click here for how to be creative with cover songs. Your performance would be improved by added dynamics, click here for advice on dynamics.

Yassi V – Lovely work. Decent song and you worked the lyrics well vocally, perhaps could be even better with a step up on the chorus. Connected really well with your audience. Good control of your vocals. Keep writing songs, you’ve got something here, click here for tips on writing songs.

MICA –Super power to your vocal but the performance had more of an impression about it than originality. Watch the facial expression as sometimes they come across very harsh, click here for tips on facial expression. You’d benefit from better mic control especially with the power you have, click here for microphone techniques.

Emily Izen Row – Connect with the audience as quickly as you can! Lots of character in your vocal but you are losing a lot of vocal projection due to poor microphone technique as you are turning your head and creating too large a gap from the mic, click here for microphone techniquesClick here for tips on facial expression and conveying emotion from the performance to improve your performance!

Brighton singers wanted - feedback

Gracey Will – Nice use of your vocal range. Great work. Good vocal control but the song choice was a bland one, click here for the importance of song choice and also click here for advice on performing a creative cover version. Don’t push the vocal as you did at the end and lose a degree of control.

Amy C – Playing the music from the sheets killed any engagement and connection between performers which is a disappointing, click here for tips of performance. Singer was looking across for something to feed off. So the performance lacked a degree of togetherness it could have had as the song is decent.

Alex – Confident performance. Watch the top notes! Nice deep tone to your vocal but watch the mic control, click here for microphone techniques. Good story to the song but it was a little repetitive which after one listen shouldn’t be the initial impression.

Joey Oscar – Really good guitar playing but it needed greater dynamics to keep the interest going throughout, click here for advice on dynamics. Performance would benefit from more eye contact with the audience, click here for tips of performance.

Adaora – Lovely sensitive delivery. Very husky vocal and it feels like you have a really powerful vocal but you are lacking confidence to let go. Look to use the stage more and have more of a presence on the stage, click here for tips on stage presence.

Jade-Joana – Nicely sung but the performance lacked life. As performers need to try and perform together, show connection and chemistry on stage.  Also click here for advice on dynamics. The performance would have benefitted from this. Think about the relationship between you and the guitarist; click here for tips on duos and groups.

Lucie Francis –Great image. Good vocally but watch your timing. You came on with good stage presence and you committed well to the performance.  Some of your phrasing was a little odd sounding and you could have played around with the sound of the words. Watch your diction, click here for vocal diction.

Jack Evans – Great song! Lovely lyrics here. Good ideas but need to find your own sound. You would benefit from more stage performance, click here for tips of performance and in particular look to improve your microphone technique, click here for microphone techniques.

Brighton singers wanted – feedback

Bethan – Diction was clear and you had powerful vocals. Performance wise, use that stage and don’t be frightened to use your hands, click here for tips of performance. Look to add greater dynamics to the performance, click here for advice on dynamics.

Jordan Ravenhill – Strong voice. Good idea with an a cappella start which gave it impact but when you started playing the guitar it sounded like a different song. Great delivery of the song. Well played.

Gina – Liked you made the song your own, good power to your vocal but you need to watch your control. A good vocal coach will be able to help you to improve your projection and tuning to be even better, click here for the importance of voice training. You connected well with the audience. Stage presence was strong.

Luch Stefano – Some sensitive guitar playing, and a nice sound. Look to build in some greater dynamics to give the performance more range, click here for advice on dynamics. Great image. Keep the eyes connected to us as an audience. Keep writing your own music.

Kyle Rossi – Lovely voice. Think you could’ve sung a more challenging song, click here for the importance of song choice. Commit more to the performance it needed more of a performance, more stage presence and more of a dynamic, click here for tips on stage presence and click here for advice on dynamics.

Abby – Good vocal tone, watch your diction and also look to improve your mic control, click here for tips on diction and click here for microphone techniques. Performance wise have a bit more confidence to wiggle and show some curvaceous moves.

Jess Spink –Good power and your use of dynamics with your projection was excellent. Confident performance. Keep the shoulders back and open to get the best results!
