Music industry judge feedback for the 21 and Over category from Open Mic UK’s 2014 Brighton singing auditions which took place at The Hove Centre
Brighton singing auditions: National singing competition Open Mic UK held Brighton singing auditions at The Hove Centre this weekend in a search for the region’s best singers, singer-songwriters, rappers and vocalists. With a place in the Open Mic UK 2014 Regional Finals up for grabs, the acts that auditioned had a lot to play for!
The Brighton auditions were judged by music industry specialists who have provided music industry feedback for a selection of acts. The people the Brighton musicians wanted to impress were Dionne Slater from Vocademy, Lora Munro of Theatre Workshop, Cameron Devlin from Hidden Cam Studios, singing teacher, Nadia Strahan and Head of Future Music, Chris Grayston.

Tom Nied – Look up and engage otherwise you are not expressing the song facially.
Kathryn Anderson – Get the hook in early and get us gripped. Better dynamics will help bring the song more to life.
Isaac Lewis – A good vocal coach will help you extend your range and projection.
Tom Stephenson – Liked the song but try and think of something original for your image to stand out. Look to engage with the audience more; not enough eye contact.
Kim Africa – More performance will hide the nerves in your vocal.
Charlotte Austwick – A very nervy performance which affected the vocals a great deal.
Saminder Pamal – Need to work with a good vocal coach to improve your projection and range.
Steve Roddis – Remember to warm up fully to show your best potential and rehearse the song more so you don’t forget the words, click here for tips on warming up.
Andrejka Sulovska – Better dynamics will make the hook clearer, you are lifting the chorus but do it more.
Sarah-Jane Drysdale – Never stop singing or make excuses as it just highlights any errors that you make.
Vanessa King & Alexander Jasper – Think about the connection between you as there is very little engagement or chemistry. Good audition.
Heidi Perrins – Really tough song to do and would really consider song choice really carefully, click here for advice on song choice. Great guitar work really drove the performance to give it the energy it needed.
Deano Boroczky – Different, liked your commitment to the performance.
Mickaela Raita – Needed to flow more, it was far too shaky and lacked control. Song choice is so important, click here for the importance of song choice.
Joshua Dillon – Quality song, great audition next time grab the offer of a chair.
Ellen – A good vocal coach will assist you with projection and expanding your range, click here for the benefits of singing lessons.
Daniel Thomas Gray – It seemed a bit odd that you did a cover considering you have original songs. Have confidence in your own material!
Dazza – Remember to engage with us to help us connect us with your music. Click here for tips on performing visually.
Brighton singing auditions – feedback continued
Alex James Ellison – Some great lyrics, bit before the chorus could be worked on to be even better, but it’s very engaging and instant. Refreshing audition.
Si McClean – Nice song choice, perhaps needs a bit more of a modern spin to update the classic but glad you tried to make it your own.
Marco Avellone – Your accent made it a struggle to hear the lyrics clearly which was a shame as your guitar work was good. Heard the chorus ok but not very radio friendly ;)
Alex Atrill – Vocally strong, remember to embrace all notes with the same attention as the high notes don’t forget the softer lighter side of the song to give it greater dynamic.
Mandy Woods – Loved the musical backing and you told the story and emotion very well.
Melissa Gawanas – Such a big song needed much more projection, always warm up fully and think about the importance of song choice.
Chantelle Gibbon – Good emotional performance. Great that you’re writing original songs but just sounded a little dated and needed some more work.
Lynette Johnston - Need more performance to build up confidence, click here for open mic night information.
Peter Olaiya – Liked the rhyme.
Kane Tracey – Liked you were unique but work on getting a killer hook to make the chorus stick in people’s heads and be a potential single hit. Work on your upper register.
Jason Cordingley – Song has potential but perhaps needs a bit more structure. Chorus and verses didn’t have enough distinction.
Ryan Lovett – Look for a good vocal coach to assist you with projection, tuning and range to be even better. Don’t ever stop your performance it just highlights errors.
Beau – Liked the song, a little Morrisey (The Smith’s) like which can’t be bad!
Keith Pemberton – A slick look and smooth vocals. Going forward, click here on tips for doing a creative cover.
