Camden Music Competition – Under 16’s Feedback

Juliet – Lovely tone and range. You expressed the song well and used the stage to good effect. Just take care with your diction, click here for more on diction for singers. Also be careful to not push the vocal too hard and lose control. A good vocal coach will be able to assist you to be even better. Click here for advice on singing teachers - picking the right teacher. Would have loved to have heard a less obvious song choice, click here for more on the importance of song choice.

Safiyah – Super tone from the start creating an impressive vibe. You have an amazing range, but don’t forget to come to the front of the stage and work the stage to engage even more with the audience, click here for more on audience engagement. Good eye contact though, it was a very confident performance, well done. Would love to hear you sing more current songs.

Rachel Simone – You have such a mature voice! Song choice was a good one, in the sense it allowed you to show off your personality and you worked the dynamics well in places. Click here for more on singing dynamics as you could commit even more to varying your tone and projection to smash it even more. Performance wise try and work the stage more, click here for more on stage performance.

Kieran – Your performance was super like your t-shirt! You picked a very difficult song to impress with however you did a good job. But picking such a popular song isn’t the wisest of choices as we have heard it so many times. What was a good shout was picking a female lead vocal as it forced it to be different. You have a really great tone and range, but click here for more on the importance of song choice.

Nandi –A great current song choice, it really suited your vocal. You have lots of power in your vocal, but try and work on those dynamics to better effect as it will really give the chorus a bigger punch and make even more impact, click here for more on singing dynamics. Performance wise look to work that stage more and connect to your audience even more. Click here for more on audience engagement

Anya – Great to see you writing already. It’s a really well written song but the delivery is quite like Ed Sheeran, so look to work on different styles to try and find your own style, click here for advice on writing a song. Performance wise, look to try and develop your facial expressions to connect to your audience more, click here for more on singing with facial expressions and click here for more on guitar playing tips. Take care vocally to not be too shouty and lose control.

J-Shu – Be more confident in yourself! It was a little too timid and you needed to commit more to the performance. More performance will assist you to build your confidence. Click here for more on performing on stage for singers. Look to work on developing your projection and range to be even better. Click here for more on how to achieve better vocal projection. Use all your tools to craft a good performance: your face, arms and movement of your body.

Julia – It was a bit of a struggle to start with but you grew as the performance developed. You have a great tone. You did really well with the mash up and really made it your own. You picked two really good current songs that flowed well together, click here for more on song mashups. You just need to be more confident and have more of a presence and energy on stage to impress even more, click here for more on stage performance.

Sam Bushell – A great song with good lyrics, it’s got a nice vibe and you performed it well. It is a little repetitive on the chorus hook though, you to work on your guitar dynamics; click here for more on guitar playing tips. These tips will help you to drive home the message in the song even more. You are very talented so keep writing!

Kiah Spurle – You could see you spent a lot of time preparing for this performance with your costume and performance.  You have a really mature voice. The difficulty of performing a character is that you are acting as a character and not showing yourself as an act, click here for more on performing a creative cover

Judges’ Feedback from the Camden Music Competition

Ellie Byers – You have a nice tone but try and make the song your own to show off your personality, click here for more on performing a creative cover. Be careful with your microphone technique; ensure you hold the mic closer to your mouth, click here for advice on microphone technique for singers. You connected well to the song, just try and use that stage even more, click here for more on stage performance.

Flavio – A very captivating performance. You have a powerful vocal with a good range. Be careful with your microphone technique; ensure you hold the mic slightly further away from your mouth when belting those high notes, click here for advice on microphone technique for singers. Liked that you had an image as image is very important, click here for information on finding an image as a musician. You also used the stage well and committed well to the performance. Congratulations!

Beth Hedges – Loved your tone and punchy vocal. Going forward think image and something that could make you stand out to be more distinctive visually, click here for information on finding an image as a musician. Performance wise, you need to find a way to elevate your songs through your performance and stage presence. Click here for more on guitar playing tips. Also song writing wise keep writing as much as you can and working on that all important killer chorus.

Kliqus – A good song with distinctive punchy lyrics that express your song well. However you need to make your lyrics count and really think about your lyrics when rapping and perform them. Don’t just rhyme your lyrics, connect to them. Try and command the stage even more, you didn’t vacate much from the centre, click here for more on  stage performance. Try and really focus on a catchy hook for the chorus, click here for more on writing that killer song chorus. But in all a confident performance with real potential.

D’Shay – You conveyed the message in the song well. You had a distinctive rasp to your vocal and you performed with integrity. The song has a good hook and you engaged well with the audience. Click here for more on audience engagement.

Donavon King – Sounded nice but you did struggle to stay in tune so look to work with a vocal coach to work on your pitch as you have good power in your vocal. But sadly you started in the wrong key to the backing track. Click here for advice on singing teachers - picking the right teacher. Song wise make the message clear and have a structure to focus on the hook. You need to work in some dynamics to the song to engage the audience more, click here for more on singing dynamics

Sam Home – You are a very confident performer. But would be good to hear your own songs; at that age you should now look to perform your own songs in this environment. It is also the worst clique artist to cover as he is just so popular and being a male guitarist it’s immediately the artist that many aspire to be like. Click here for more on guitar playing tips.

Camden Music Competition – Judges’ Feedback

Rachelle – Loved your husky vocal, the lyrics flowed nicely across the chords, but you need to work on your lyrics to make them stronger and less clique. Also you need to commit more to the performance as it needed to be sharper and have more purpose. Loved the outfit too well thought through. Click here for more on stage performance.

Saadet – A lovely tone to a sensitive song accompanied by an emotional performance, but you need to bring more variation to your expression, click here for more on singing with facial expressions. Song choice wise try and make the song your own; it was a very x factor song choice, click here for more on performing a creative cover

Art – Sounded good but what was the song about? We need to hear the message of the song and the lyrics. Click here for more on how to write a song. You also need to really engage with your audience and connect to them more, click here for more on stage performance.

Princess Kemz – Liked your hair as it made you stand out, very funky. But make the outfit fit the same so you look more complete. Click here for information on finding an image as a musician. You flipped to rapping and singing with equal ability. You need to commit more to the performance and look to command that stage more, click here for more on stage performance.

Alex Popa – Nice voice and song. The electric guitar gave a lovely ambient vibe and you built the song well with some well worded lyrics, but it needs that all important chorus to be stronger to leave us with a song that sticks in our head. Click here for more on writing that killer song chorus.

GM5 – Good pick up, well worked harmonies and performance. It was a bit dated though, it needs a modern lick. Image could be tightened a little, click here for more on act image and synchronisation. With song choice try not to choose the most popular songs, click here for more on song mashups.

Tommy Down – Liked the song, a good title with strong phrasing to the chorus. You have such a good natural tone. Try and develop the guitar work a little more absorbing as the guitar work is too basic. Your vocal and delivery is carrying it at present. Click here for more on guitar playing tips.

Cheryl Hillier – A very pleasant song, portrayed the story well. Be good to see a bit more passion and emotion. As performers try and connect and reach out to each other as performers. Click here for more on act image and synchronisation.

Charlie Blaize – Lyrics flowed well and it was an enjoyable performance. Chorus was catchy and worked well, try and change the delivery of the chorus. Click here for more on singing dynamics
