Singers and songwriters came to impress at a show for Camden music opportunities at Dingwalls

Camden Music Opportunities: Open Mic UK gave budding singers Camden music opportunities at the weekend. The singers and songwriters came to perform in front of industry judges in the hopes of getting through the Camden music opportunities and onto the The Beck Theatre. 

The judging panel at the Camden music opportunities were;

  • Chris Grayston - Head Judge; Music Consultant who works for Sony, Thames TV, The Voice to name a few/
  • Carly Cunningham - Singer-songwriter
  • Annette Eyewu - Pineapple Performing Arts School
  • Laurence Hobbs - Charthouse and previously produced with Sam Smith and Pixie Lott
  • Alec Wright - Thames TV Associate Producer

Shehana – You have lots of potential, ensure you are as close to the mic as possible. You have a great tone, remember to focus more on your timing as sometimes jumping in a little quickly. Lauren – Love the fact you were smiling throughout showed us all that you wanted to be there. Leni – You have such a rich tone to your vocal and you sustain the words so well and with such control. Anjali Daswani – Vocally it felt very nervy click here for more on dealing with nerves.. Kevin Fernandez Montoya – Mature performance with a rich vocal. Rosie Trentham – What a super original song, hope you are writing loads and looking to develop a whole album’s worth, the more you can write the better click here for more on writing that killer song chorus. Consider standing when playing to give more opportunity to perform and give more communication through your body.

Taliah Hammell – Quite a theatrical performance which of course means you are always acting a part rather than showing us much of yourself as an individual. Click here for more on performing a performing a creative cover

Jasmine Regan – Lots of presence and attitude to give us an engaging performance. Song choice wise it’s a dated iconic song and ideally look to give us something more modern and contemporary click here for more on the importance of song choice.  Vocally you have lots of potential but take care not to force the vocal and give an air you are losing a little control.

Tiana – Great to see you considering image click here for more on the importance of image as an artist. Vocally you have lots of potential but take care not to force the vocal and give an air you are losing a little control.

Hatty – Nice song just look to vary the vocal dynamics more especially with the delivery which if you perform as much as you can will develop. Try and test out new songs and develop your stage presence and stage craft.

Evie Mellman – Good song choice, always a good idea to pick something modern and also pick a song originally by the opposite gender as naturally it will sound differently straight away. Watch your expression try and give us optimism and hope in the emotion of the song rather than pain and anguish click here for more tips on singing with facial expressions.

Alice – Perform as much as you can to build the confidence and become more comfortable on stage as you have the ability. Rehearse the whole performance as the end wasn’t as smooth a finish as it could have been.

Evie B – Very nervy start, with the guitar work not flowing as it could have sounded click here for more on adding more guitar dynamics. Danny Corbo – Super rich vocal to give us a good first impression. Marcel De-Olivera – You have loads of potential not sure the song choice was the best, very brave but you didn’t always seem comfortable and under control. Phoebe Aston – Superb tone to your voice. Serena – Pretty song choice! Ryan Slaiper – Super rasp, sounded a little like Sam Smith which isn’t a bad thing, look to climb in to the vocal even more. 21 and Over's Music Feedback - Camden Music Opportunities

Sasha Ka – Strong vocal and original song. Look to hit us harder with that all important first impression. Tori Rose – Beautiful tone to your voice. Aye-Six – Cool look and awesome confidence. Look to focus on the vocal hook and let the song breathe it’s a little intense at times. Look to change the dynamics both vocally and with the performance. Sarah Krimson – Quirky performance! The song didn’t seem to bring out the best in you vocally try and write songs that highlight the best of your tone. Charm Cee – Great, positive song lyrics and good stage presence. You were very sparkling click here for the importance of singer's image. Song has a lot of potential but the vocals in the track were too late and over bearing should have just kept them to distinct harmonies and addition adlib bits. The song probably needs tweaking slightly as a bit repetitive and on first listen shouldn’t be considering click here for writing songs with that killer song chorus

21 and Over's - Camden Music Opportunities

FELA – Great, very catchy song which flowed well. Obviously writing about Christ could potentially limit your audience so it’s your strength and weakness. Julio (Songwriting Competition) – Great lyrics and a really catchy song. Lovely cool feel to your performance. Carla Marques – Very passionate performance! Emma Finnen – Lovely unique quality tone to your vocal! Barnaby (Songwriting Competition) – Lovely heart felt lyrics, well done for writing such true felt lyrics! Brave and we need to judge it on the lyrics and your delivery. Try and punch out some lyrics that you feel are more profound. Use your hands and body more to convey the emotion more and watch your breathing.

Lizzie Malessy (Songwriting Competition) – Loved your music!  You are a fantastic story below not sure we are familiar with the song and/or it’s repetitive enough for us to sing along with you on the song. Commit even more to give us more body movement rather than standing static.

Ameilia Lappert (Songwriting Competition) – Lovely stage presence! Song flowed well and a nice sweet cute radio friendly song, with heartfelt lyrics. Look to commit even more to the expression in your face click here for more on tips and adding emotion as a singer.

BrazenFlow – Big energy and great stage presence! Practice so you can’t fail as you lost your lyrics a couple of times. The song could have flowed better so one thing you could do is to perform as much as you can so you can perfect your delivery as you have potential. Shaun Berry (Songwriting Competition) – Very passionate performance! Look to work around the song chorus to make that shine out even more as the song has potential. Look to change the dynamics in particular the delivery and projection ahead of the chorus hold back to give more impact the punch through the chorus. Denis Coleman (Songwriting Competition) – You worked the stage and if you perform as much as you can it will develop to be even more natural click here for more on performing on stage as a singer. Nice touch with the violin as a breakdown.

LILLY – Nice introduction to engage with the audience both funny and showed off your personality well. Stendhal – Mature performance with a rich vocal. Ash Avery – Very catchy number, how do you play all those instruments at the same time and still have smile and look so relaxed impressive! 

Jocasta – Your song is haunting and would fit well on a film soundtrack as one example of placement. 

Leah Finegold – Remember to embrace the light and positivity of the song and not just the anguish click here for more on emotion as a singer. Don’t forget to move from the stop more and with purpose be more animated and commit to the performance even more, click here for more on performing on stage as a singer.

Madame Kapuscinska – Vocally you sounded a little nasually. Was a little confused with the connection of the song and image click here for the importance of singer's image. . Vocals on the backing clashed with your vocals so try and make that cleaner and with more space. 

Soph Retief (Songwriting Competition) – Lyrics flowed well, the chorus is catchy and meaningful click here for more on writing that killer song chorus. You have a lovely vibrato just make sure you don’t over use it.

Finbarr O’Brien – It’s a lovely crafted song but needs that hook early on to really grab you click here for tips on writing that killer chorus. The performance would benefit from more dynamics it’s a bit of a slow burner. Also click here for the importance of eye contact especially when trying to connect us to your music.

Carla Marques (Songwriting Competition) – Watch your mic control, look to pull away from the microphone when want to give additional power. You performed and seemed a lot more comfortable with this song, perhaps as you’ve performed it out more. Look to commit more to song chorus to make it shine through more.

CAMDEN MUSIC OPPORTUNITIES

All singers and songwriters successful through the Camden music opportunities progressed onto the next stage of the competition at the Area Final Showcase which will be held at The Beck Theatre on Sunday 12th November.
