Camden Singing Competition - Under 16’s Feedback
Nicole - Always a hard task to open a show, and you nailed the delivery! Great attempt, full of emotion and attention to image which suited your style. Nice dynamic contrast too. Not every pitch and intervallic movement was exact today, but this will come with experience and further training. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help strengthen your vocals. Overall, you scored well with the judges. Well done Nicole.
Sophia - Lovely voice, great sense of expression, mature interplay with backing in terms of harmony and rhythmic shaping. Sustained dynamic weighting was well supported. Good attention to image and body language assisted the believability of the performance, You also used the stage relatively well – try to develop this. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. A stronger act in this age group.
Lida - Hard to believe this is an under 16 act, such was the maturity and composure on stage. Vocally strong and convincing in delivery. You need to decide you stylistic identity, with an image which will help with commercial edge and build on your talent. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Split the judges Lida – one to watch with further advise and development.
Kenzie - You looked great, and took advantage of this opportunity today, singing with fair assurance, and choosing a song within your range. Tempo was well controlled, and busier groupings were placed with clarity. There is a good foundation of technical ability, and you were brave with the projections. Click here for tips on building stage confidence for singers. Potential here – keep up with the training and gaining experience.
George - Captivating, lovely tone and near consistent pitching of repeating motifs. Very good control of pulse and structure, and lovely vibrato to sustained values. Technically this was a strong act, you need to now give greater attention to how this works with image and whether perhaps backing or accompaniment would help with intensification / introduce some variation as you progress. (Not all the judges felt the song choice was correct). Click here for tips on song choices. You have bundles of ability and promise George. Well done.
Resham - Great song choice, you presented with clarity and conviction. Scope for greater use of mic – watch technique here, just a thin today. Click here for tips on microphone techniques. But word painting added character, and you timed with the backing comfortably. You need to continue your musical journey and try and find a commercial edge / style which works for you. There is much to build on here Resham, come back again next year with more experience.
Latalia - Great vocal, clear support, confidence and ability technically. You deserved your place in the regional final and nailed the delivery. You now need to gain more experience, work towards greater stagecraft and connect more with the audience – you looked a little tentative which will of course become less of an issue over time. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Many reasons to be pleased with your work today,
Daniel - Fantastic attention to image great song choice, and you were comfortable with your performance. Even at this young age you show many promising aspects, namely vocal ability, rhythmic security, sync’ing of phrases, and a degree of shaping in groupings. You also settled enough to be confident presenting with increasing sense of ‘performance’. Click here for tips on your performance. In essence, you will attract a following Daniel, you need to keep up the great work and develop your experience.
Ioana - Technically very competent with this brave song choice which was within your range and ability – well done here! Lovely image, and there was little not to like about you Ioana. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. You split the judges and will be in the top half for certain in this highly competitive age group. Whatever happens you need to keep working on your ability and talent.
Mighty Wise - Love it! Talk about entertaining a crowd….. You held the audience for a very long time before nailing a fantastic performance full or personality and quality. Click here for tips on audience engagement. The original was great too. You were right on the style and added your own edge. Catchy, confident, a clear ability, with a commercial edge. Good luck guys, you have a lot going for you!
Nayla - Sultry, smooth, suited your style, assured and held the audience. Great backing and great potential from what we are guessing is a seasoned performer. Click here for tips on backing music. This is a very difficult age group to progress from, but there is no doubt you have something and it will be interesting to see how far you could go.
Leni - Lovely voice, image and overall presence. You nailed the style and have a clear identity at such a young age. Great connection with the audience, and dynamic shaping was impressive. Click here for tips on audience engagement. This was a performance with a real sense of believability - you will be unlucky not to go through.
Camden Singing Competition – Singing Feedback
Aaylia - I really liked this! You need to gain as much experience and vocal training as you can to secure the foundation of what is clearly developing as an entertainer and performer. Work with a singing teacher that can help develop your vocals. Click here for picking the right singing teacher for you. You want this and it comes through... Take your time, try to develop your style, keep up the vocal training and continue with the great work!
Maddie - Technically secure, lovely piano accompaniment, and attention was given to image. You have a high degree of musicality, and focused on the delivery from a technical perspective which came through. Take some time and advice to look at how the image works for you commercially, which might mean taking time to decide on a stylistic identity. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Also seek more stage experience to develop your connection with the audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers.
Sparkle - Lovely song choice, clearly prepared and committed in performance. Nice vocals and attention to interplay on stage – well done here. Needs a little more work in terms of image between you, and the vocals were a little thin technically, with scope for greater support in places, but a good duo with emerging identity. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Keep up the good work and let’s see how you develop with more experience.
Chloe - You justified your place on stage today with a good delivery, the result of much preparation and training. You should be proud of what you have achieved. To move to the next level, give greater thought to image and try and use the stage a little more. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. This will also help your connection with the audience as well as overall presence. Of course this will come with more experience.
Aarti - Nice image and vocal presence, although a bit in upper chest voice. Mostly solid through the break, losing balance slightly - try to be more confident here. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help strengthen your vocals. Liked the image which suited your style, although there you have lots of time on your side to decide which identity works best for you. Lovely expression. Try to use the stage more Aarti, this would enhance your overall communication.
Perdy - Distinctive style, distinctive vocal, and yes, there was something … You have a certain uniqueness which if packaged correctly could have mileage commercially. Not sure about the image, and whilst you scored very well with 2 of the judges, there was a difference of opinion today. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Try to develop your act into a more polished package with clearer alignment between material and image, with greater confidence on stage. One to watch.
Rhea - Hint of emotion to this delivery which technically was delivered mostly securely. Give thought to greater dynamic shaping, support and exactness of interval, plus aim for greater confidence on stage. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. This was clearly prepared, committed and you now need to work on how you are perceived in terms of image and gain as much live experience as you can.
Sylvie – Smooth vocal tone / style. A convincing act. To move to the next level think about how you are going to achieve a more commercial package in terms of alignment with identify and a marketable edge overall. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. This said, you scored consistently well across the judges.
Camden Singing Competition – 16-20’s Feedback
Yard Sand - Liked the theme and the idea, and the song was a good choice too. Vocals could be more balanced between two of you, (Could be closer to mic with guitar). I think there is some potential but there is work required to be a believable duo with presence and conviction. Click here for tips on singing in a group. Image was considered but loose. Female vocal more commercial overall.
Taylor Ronnie - Distinctive vocal quality - something interesting and unique. Guitar tone not as good as you – this detracted today, but with accompaniment, I can see this being capable of development. Click here for tips on playing guitar. Aim for greater communication also, you were slightly less engaged with the audience which also affected conviction. Click here for tips on audience engagement.
Mikaela and Ink - I was really waiting for this to get going, as the idea was a good one. For me, the image did not work with what you were trying to achieve and despite a general security of vocal and clear preparation, there will be question marks over stylistic identity to be able move to the next level. Click here for act image and synchronisation. Have a think about image, and quality of musical support also.
Ethan Peters - Nice vocal, and an honest performance. Good eye contact and you overcame your nerves to deliver with increasing steadiness and engagement. Click here for tips on dealing with nerves. Very nice through the break into head voice. This added welcome substance. You need to give greater thought to image and how to achieve a more commercial edge. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician.
Leyla - Liked the commitment, body language and word painting. Clearly engaged within the music, you delivered with conviction, supported by technical security and an image which generally worked (slightly neutral?). There was scope for stronger vocal in upper range and greater support / dynamic intensity would benefit. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. This all said, would like to see with a wider repertoire as you were a stronger act in this age group today.
Zoe - Good opening dialogue, composed and took control of the situation. ‘Man with the box’ was good, adding a depth which helped the delivery but needs attention to image – you are a duo essentially therefore both equally visible and exposed. Greater connection here would assist. Click here for tips on singing in a group. Musically strong however, and you looked and sounded great. Underlying confidence and substance on display today, well done.
The Link - Safe delivery, technically secure with confident support on guitar. There was a degree of emotion and expression with scope for more personalization and individuality. Image was also basic today – aim to think about how you can be more commercially packaged. Harmony blended fairy well, and try and keep the extent of emotional body language and word painting in check. Click here for tips on singing in a group. Potential here, with greater work and development.
Xaira - Great presence and vocal control. There was a certain effortlessness which was established and convincing. Image suited the style too and there was an element of stagecraft evident (Try to develop this). Click here for stage performance tips for singers. In your chosen genre you are established and good at what you do. Your challenge is greater assurance plus ensure greater preparation so you are fully aligned with the backing length. Good, but still room to take it to the next level.
Maria - Good song choice, and you were committed in delivery – well done! An underlying tentativeness however which did come through and not every pitch and interval placement was exact. Work with a singing teacher that can help develop your vocals. Click here for picking the right singing teacher for you. Creditable head voice and some nice dynamic shaping. Scored quite well with the judges – your next step is continued vocal training and confidence on stage.
Llianna - As a performer you have a presence and held the stage. I think there is more there and this did not come through today. Maybe song choice? Really wanted this to get going and it didn't quite. Click here for the importance of song choices. It is clear you can sing and your attention to image was effective, and I would be interested in seeing more of your work. A top half act for sure, missing the musical edge we think you have. Split the judges!
William - Secure vocal, nice dynamic shaping (be careful not to speed when increasing projection – scope for greater independence here), but overall keys work was fine. There needs to be more commercial consideration to compete at a higher level, including image and how you connect with the audience. Click here for tips on audience engagement. You held the delivery with essentially vocal alone, which is no mean achievement and deserved your place in the regional final.
Molly - Great vocal for the very most part, supported with effective expression, word painting and attention to image. Low range not as strong/balanced today, but delivery held interest on stage and you were a stronger act in this age group. Pay attention to your low notes. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help strengthen your vocals. Convincing and effective performer, still requiring a greater identity but commercial potential here. (Well ended)
Em Lawrence - A real crowd pleaser! It is difficult being authoritative behind a keyboard on stage, but this was a good attempt. The keys playing was in truth not always fluent – give thought to supporting musicians or backing, which would also give you an opportunity to showcase a greater still range of expression and individual colour. Click here for tips on using a music instrumental. You were a bit hampered. However vocally strong, and it is clear you should be competing in the area final. Well done.
Rebecca - Liked the image! Interesting and thoughtful presentation here. Something of a story teller approach, which was effective and suited your style. Body language was effective (maybe trying a little too hard?) and overall confidence was good. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Vocal security at the core and you were engaging. A stronger act, scoring consistently across the judges
Rayenne - Liked this delivery, which was generally comfortably performed, albeit with an underlying send of tentativeness which prevented a full depth of expression and personality shining through. Give thought to image also. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. There is clearly something there, and needs more experience and thought to bring it to the fore. Keep going!
Camden Singing Contest – 21 and Over’s Feedback
Kate - Loved the experience composure and measured ability to perform in front of an audience. You are confortable with your chosen image and delivery style which was very good. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Excellent use of rhythms. Scored generally well with the judges. Have a think about how to give yourself even more of a distinctive edge in this competitive genre, but very good.
Chady - Smooth, sultry and you clearly deserved your position in the regional final. The delivery was comfortable, with scope for a greater sense of engagement and connection with the audience. There is promise here, although we felt that you were performing within yourself. Have a think about how you can achieve greater stage presence, but you have something to build on Chady. Click here for stage performance tips for singers.
Angelo - Liked the original, and the guitar work had some lively motifs which were nearly always consistent and well articulated. Image was not as considered as the song writing and the quality of delivery – give some further thought about how you can give yourself a more of a commercial package. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Good musical content. And scored well with some of the judges.
Jay Hall - Great interpretation of an enormous song, made your own in distinctive style. Nice guitar support and convincing / appropriate word painting - natural and instinctive without being overdone. Click here for tips on playing guitar. Basic image, although this did give some contrast to the visibility of the interpretation. (This approach might not succeed with a wider repertoire). Try to give yourself a more substantial sense of identity but potential here overall. A strong act today in this age group.
Aliak - Liked the image, and controlled introduction using dialogue to create your own context - experience at work here! The song began musically, with effective complexity of harmonic blending, rhythmic interplay and you did well to project with confidence whilst presenting the guitar work comfortably. Click here for tips on playing guitar. Strong delivery, which gave you an opportunity to showcase your ability and hold the stage. You split the judges, some of whom thought there was room for further development.
Yatty - Well done Yatty, you performed well in your own genre and gave a welcome variation to the styles on display at today’s show. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Technically, support was mostly effective, and the signature moments were nailed but of course in this chosen style it has to be perfect to be distinctive and succeed, and there were areas which need further work. It is clear you are good at what you do – stay with it and good luck….
Camden Singing Competition – Feedback for Singers
Sky Jones - Well done to present with such expression and individual colour. You clearly prepared for this and engaged well with the song. Upper range was a little thin in truth, and it was not obvious as to your style. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help strengthen your higher register. You have a clear ability to perform and deliver live work, with scope for further development and identity.
Violet Sky - You made this song your own! Clear personality here and you were brave enough to be full of conviction in a distinctly original delivery style. Click here for tips on building stage confidence for singers. Of course, with uniqueness comes a difference of opinion, and the judges did differ in their interpretation of your performance. At one end you scored nearly top marks from one judge and at the other, there was less certainty. With advice and direction, there is clear promise as a performer. Keep going!
Rippz - It is always a winner to be confident enough to organize effective crowd participation, and from the first moment you took control. Click here for tips on audience participation. As a performer, you were good, and sustained interest all through. Image needs more thought and investment to be as good as you, but there is clear potential commercially. You are very good at what you do in your style and with your personality. Definitely one to watch….
Alex Wilshaw - You did well to engage from a seated position, and guitar work was great. There was much energy, control of dynamics, and good presence on stage. Liked the rougher vocal tones, which worked for you in the context of the song. Your work does deserve a wider audience, but you also need to give thought to image and how you are going to make yourself more polished in this very difficult genre. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Good delivery though, well done.
Mike Beech - Liked the delivery in terms of security, and you scored very high from some judges. In some ways whilst your delivery was secure and confortable it needed more of an edge to compete. With further development we feel there is something here which you only hinted at tonight. Click here for tips on how to sing with confidence. A top half delivery which is capable of more.
Mimi And Ollie - Polished, comfortable, good attention to image, which suited your identity, I could see stylistic security, underpinned with quality vocals and well considered guitar support. Good low range and low dynamic control. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. It is obvious you have something a little extra and deserve to be competing in the area final. A crowd pleaser!
Edward - Highly personal and committed performance, with bundles of personality. Liked the vocal and the essence of the original song which suited you. You made the most of your opportunity on stage tonight but give thought to the guitar tone which one judge correctly described as ‘earthy’! Click here for tips on playing guitar. Whilst this did detract, it also possibly hampered you as a performer. You will attract an audience Edward, and we wish you well…
Florence - The original was nice, but perhaps not the most effective track to showcase the range of your abilities. Give thought to a song writing competition for this particular piece. Click here for tips on writing a song. There is clearly a musical edge to your work, and the song meant a lot to you, now give though to how you can gain a commercial angle to move the next level as a performer. Good delivery, split the judges overall.
Lauren - You were clearly prepared, and engaged in the delivery of this piece, demonstrating a clear ability to sing with confidence and a degree of conviction. Click here for tips on how to sing with confidence. Couldn’t quite identify what you were trying to achieve stylistically, the package did not quite work for me, but a solid act who clearly deserved her place in the regional final. Well done Lauren.
Ania - A clearly personal song, beautifully delivered with obvious sentiment and emotion. Powerful context, and this came through in your performance. I liked this, not just the message but the vocal strength and image which worked for you. Aim for greater dynamic shaping and contrast in vocal projection, but a stronger act in this age group. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics.
Nubienne - Loved the backing track, hit me instantly, and you suited the style vocally. Captivating! It is obvious you have performed before and the song choice was good for you, although it perhaps needed some variation as it progressed. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Whether this will be enough to go through from a very competitive age group is less certain although did scored well with some judges. Keep working at it Nubienne, you were in the mix today.
Koua - Distinctive track, delivered with measure and control. Liked the vocal more than the song if I am being very honest, although original material has to be applauded always. This said, to compete at the next level aim for a song which is more likely to showcase your ability, and think about how your image aligns with your chosen style. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. You do have something, and with further work and direction, I would be interested to see you perform again.
Katie G - From the crowd response, I was hoping this was going to be a great delivery, and in the main it was! The keyboard playing needed to settle but once there you were more comfortable. There is a possibility you should think about accompaniment, which might also make you freer on stage to express and allow depth of colour / engagement to come through. Click here for tips on using a music instrumental. The performance was secure and solid, but we felt there was more which we did not see. Split the judges!
Deejay - A clearly experienced performer, strong vocally with lovely tones suiting your chosen genre, delivered with a sense of effortlessness and excellent support across the ranges. Prepared, committed and trained, there were many highly positive aspects to this. Image was also aligned with what you were trying to achieve. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. The less certain part is whether or not - as good as you are – this will be sufficient to compete with such a small number of places available to go through to the area finals. You will be in the mix Deejay – well done.
Jessica - Strong vocal, nice word painting and you captured the essence of the song. With this kind of repertoire, you need something distinctive to be recognized and singled out, look to find what this is. We were not completely sure about the image in truth. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. You also need to give thought as to how you can give yourself a commercial edge, but a top half performance overall. One to watch with further development.
Ann Margaret - Secure, comfortable and generally confident. Give thought to how you can demonstrate a wider range of performance qualities, engaging with the song more, and aiming for greater sense of communication. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. There was scope also to package yourselves more commercially, but numerous positive aspects.
Bird and Family Bryon - I could not decide whether this was a little too karaoke or bone fide stylistic. Perhaps even retro. It grew on me as a piece, and there was increasing substance as you progressed. There was an overriding need to focus more on the wider elements of the delivery, including overall audience connection and image, but there was something distinctive and unique about you. Click here for tips on audience engagement. Split the judges.
Sophie Bea - Don't forget to use the mic Sophie – a little quiet tonight, but great vocal, full of life and clarity. Click here for tips on microphone techniques. Excellent detailing and expression. An obvious performer here, capable of holding the stage and you have found a style which works for you. Gentler body language was effective and I loved how you sang through a smile! This is always going to be a crowd pleaser in this genre. You looked and sounded confortable and will be unlucky not to go through. Well done!
Burridge - High tempo, great intro, much potential here, committed and clearly in your own image. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. You have found something and it is obvious you should pursue it. You have a degree of commercial attraction, which does need direction and shaping.- rough around the edges! However something raw and believable about you in your chosen musical identity. Good work…!
