Camden Singing Contest - Under 16’s Feedback
Ella – Cute look! You have a lovely tone and gave us a well-rehearsed performance. What amazing courage and confidence for someone so young Ella! You also enjoyed seeing yourself on the big screen we could tell. Clearly prepared with an ambitious song choice, which you made your own. Click here for tips on performing a creative cover as a singer. Keep up the vocal training and sing in public as much as you can. Looking forward to seeing how you develop. Well done.
Morgan - You needed a little time to settle, (try to relax!) although you nailed the delivery for the very most part. We liked your cover. The performance was affected by an underlying hesitancy which did detract a little, but here is a voice there, plus some lovely individual expression and colour. Try to build your confidence as high as possible to eliminate this hesitancy. Click here for tips on building stage confidence for singers. Guitar work was mostly confident, and image generally worked.
Paighton - You have a commercial edge Paighton, distinctive vocal and attention to image. Your next step is to develop confidence, stagecraft and try to communicate with greater conviction. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Have a think about what to do in the instrumental part also (slightly awkward) and try and avoid plosives into the mic. Click here for microphone techniques for singers. One to watch.
Alice - Hard to believe this level of composure is from an under 16 year old! You clearly prepared the act, made an attempt to use the stage, there was a presence and I would say there is a commercial attraction here too. There are aspects which need more experience (e.g. needed time to steady, mic technique), but a stronger act in this competitive age group. Click here for microphone techniques for singers – getting this right will better your performance.
Holly - Good vocal expression, personalization and a melismatic quality. Strong, natural voice, affected by nerves, but bags of potential here. Try to minimize these nerves, so you can focus on your vocal ability. Click here for tips on dealing with nerves. You painted the words beautifully, and chose the song well. It suited your range and style. Definitely something their Holly, keep going….
Annush - Wow! You held my attention very well here. I stopped, listened and watched more than any other act in this show, and was not disappointed! What a song choice, what a vocal, what technical ability at this stage. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Of course, you need to develop your presence and stage craft but this will come. The song also needed to steady slightly as it progressed, but you nailed it! Fantastic Annush. Well done.
Lashayah - I wanted you to be good to do justice to the stage entrance, song choice and attention to image. Immediately there was a stage presence, and the slower tempo / atmospheric track was well sustained. Strong vocal, your image and persona suited the style and there is are potential commercial possibilities. Click here for act image and synchronisation. Would be interested to see a wider repertoire.
Lauren - Nailed it! What an ambitious song – comfortably performed technically. Clearly prepared, with musicality at the core. The wider aspects, including communication, presence and command of stage need further work to match your talent, but these will come with experience and further work. Click here for stage performance tips for singers and tips on audience engagement. Definitely top half.
Sharlina - Lovely performance and portrayal of mood/ lyric. Liked the image which suited the song. Click here for act image and synchronisation. You have much promise from a confidence and performing point of view. The next step is to ensure the backing material is as good as you are, and you need to tighten intonation and exactness of intervallic movement in places. Click here for some tips on backing music. One to watch with further work and experience.
Khuwayne - Under 16? Amazing! Loved the attention to your own projection, stagecraft, and you made a good job of the song. Some technical work required, some pitching slips but overall a promising act. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help you eliminate those pitching issues. Nice dynamics, vocal slides, control of placement and presence. Split the judges but will be in the final mix to go through.
Simona C - Very musical! Loved the original track, supporting music was excellently appropriate. Duo format worked for you beautifully. Great image – overall very polished. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. You will have a market for this material, which you do very well and I would keen to see more of your material. You will be unlucky not to go through.
Marcel - Loved it! Great performance movement, image and so much to like about this. You handled the opening very well and you clearly enjoyed it. Singing through a smile will always help. It is obvious you have a style suited around the material choice, you now need to work on the vocal accuracy and training to match the image and package. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help you with your vocal accuracy. Great attempt!
Eddie Jones - Very mature performance and handling of a sensitive track. Have a think about musical support or accompaniment so you can focus on projecting and portraying the emotion more - you clearly have an ability and confidence there. Click here for tips on using a music instrumental. Image wise, you also need to think about how you are perceived not just as a talented singer and musician, but as a stage performer also. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Assured dynamic shaping. Well done.
Grace - Liked the vocals, lovely tone, well controlled timing, use of rhythms and phrases, and shaping to the phrases added colour. You have good foundation technically, and the body language was effective. Take your time to find your style – try out a number of different repertoires to see what works for you. Take advice also as to how to package this with attention to image as you develop. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician.
Sophie - Good song choice, confident presentation. Click here for the importance of song choices. You clearly prepared for this and nailed and performed with a degree of assurance. Try to develop the communication even further, although creditable here. Click here for tips on being able to sing with emotion. Technically you need to keep up the training and gain as much experience as you can performing live.
Alana - Great track! Upbeat was effective. Suited you too – you nailed the energy to male the song work. Try to find an edge to compete with the strongest acts in the age group, but there is no doubt you have an ability to sing and entertain. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Top half act today, with promise with advise and further training. Scored very highly indeed with one judge!
Camden Singing Contest – Singing Feedback
Lucy - You have something!. Composure, musicality and a story telling style. Guitar accompaniment might just work for you too, nicely supported the delivery. Click here for guitar playing tips. Well structured, confident, and well performed. Keep up the training, performing experience and give though as to how to package this with an image suiting your style.
Sabina - You steadied into this performance! A committed delivery from a young performer who is still learning her trade. You used the stage well, and gave thought to the presentation as a whole. Audience connection was good. The song was a little out of your range but put the initial slips and down to experience. Click here for the importance of song choices. Timing also needs to be tightened fractionally. However, technical skill and consistent intonation will come with training and further work. Well done.
Josie D - Loved the original. Loved the accompaniment. Liked the delivery style too. Click here for tips on performing a creative cover as a singer. This might work for you as an identity. You are best advised to try out different repertoire too, but would like to see how you develop. A stronger act from a very strong age show today. One to watch. (Great ending!)
Elisabeth - There is nothing more likely to set a warm tone than a huge smile as you walk on to the stage. Whatever nerves you were feeling in front of this big crowd, you hid them very well indeed. Liked the communication, body language, hint of theatre. Keep up the vocal training – this will of course come with ongoing work and practice, but a clear entertainer here! Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help assist in your vocal training. Could be the beginning of the next star performer!
Oscar - Well attempted original. Some good structure, shape and melody/lyrical value. Liked the vocal. In truth, the guitar support was not as strong, give thought to backing or supporting musicians. This would also allow you to use the stage more and seek to communicate with more effective conviction. Click here for tips on using a music instrumental. Promising Oscar – well done.
Kayla - You captured the mood, delivered with sensitivity and personality in expression and individual colour. The technical performance was strong and controlled. Image was considered, and you were very believable all through. (although have a think about how to approach the non-singing open instrument parts – slightly more awkward here). Click here for stage performance tips for singers – these will help you iron out those awkward moments. You will go through to the next round comfortably Kayla. Good luck in the area finals.
Jaime - Sweet voice, great song choice! You nailed the delivery – there is no doubt you can sing and present a piece of work in public. Your best stage is to gain as much experience as you can, give thought to how the overall package. There is much scope to engage and communicate with the audience more – take your time to develop your identity and confidence on stage. Click here for tips on building stage confidence for singers.
Evie - The delivery effectively picked up in energy and intensity, and you gave a committed performance. There is potential here a stage presence which will serve you well as you continue with the vocal training. I liked the body language and portrayal of the lyrics, try to develop this further. Click here for tips on being able to sing with emotion.
Maddie - Great delivery of a challenging piece. Low range was well supported and there was a creditable intensification in the chorus – good contrast. This was a convincing delivery from a stronger performer who has clearly given though to image, delivery and creating the mood. Some descending intervals slipped and backing could be as good as the performance. Click here for some tips on backing music. Confident overall a top half performance.
Camden Singing Contest – 16-20’s Feedback
Molli - This was a composed delivery from a performer with an established image, and which suited the style. Have a think about introduction length (lost momentum – scope for greater impact and presence), but a comfortable delivery. Secure vocally, you connected well with the audience. Click here for tips on audience engagement. Good opening to the show – well done.
July - Great vocals, great image, thoughtful musical support and accompaniment (Your pianist was clearly in the zone too! Great portrayal of mood). There is promise here, and you have a developing style which is worth pursuing. I would also be interested to hear a wider repertoire. There were one or two question marks over exactness/confidence of pitch in melismatic parts, but an expressive performance. Click here for tips on building stage confidence for singers. Scored very well with some of the judges.
Dana - A committed delivery, musical, considered, prepared, and delivered with a hint of emotion. This added to the performance. You might wish to make clearer your identity stylistically and align this more closely with image –less immediately clear today, but confident, well presented and one to watch. Click here for tips on act image and synchronisation.
Sophie - You held the stage, I liked the guitar work, and the song choice worked for you. Click here for the importance of song choices. Nice movement through the break into reliable head voice, although not all chest voice tones were fully balanced. Technically secure for the most part. I got the impression there was a tentativeness, which did come through, but there is potential here. Scored well with the judges.
Darcelle - Loved it! Great song choice, style, image, presence and comfortable performance. You have an established sense of communication and how you want to present yourself. It works for you! Vocal security at the core, albeit with scope for a little more dynamic shaping / contrast, but entertaining and engaging. Click here for tips on incorporating vocal dynamics in to your performance. You will be unlucky not to go through Darcelle – a crowd pleaser….
Livvy - Your chosen song was very effective and you delivered with conviction. Strong guitar accompaniment too. Click here for guitar playing tips. You have an ability to sing and perform - you now need to decide how you can find a commercial angle to become more distinctive. You will attract a following Livvy, would want to see again after work and further development.
Izara - Izara, you were one of the strongest performers today. You absolutely nailed it! Individual, confident, full of authority. You hid the nerves well, showed a comfortable technical security and dynamic shaping. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. You were expressive, I liked the delivery style and image too. Yup - not a lot not to like about you. Well done!
Emily - A song from the heart! Liked the theme – strong lyrics and a good story telling approach. I would like to see more of your work, especially in terms of your songwriting. Click here for tips on writing a song. Performance wise, you scored well across the judges, but might find it difficult to compete. Try and select/write a which demonstrates more range. Think about how you can command the stage more too… Click here for stage performance tips for singers.
Lydia - I liked the song, the approach, delivery style and can see much promise here. The image might need further thought and attention, and there is opportunity to showcase greater ability. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. I can sense there is more there, but a secure delivery overall. Scored very well with two of the judges in particular.
Gannat - You looked and sounded great! Lovely distinctive vocal – an individual feel to your tone. You sang through a smile, prepared well and the choice of song worked. Try to take advantage of the full extent of the stage, and work on greater sense of performance. Click here for stage performance tips for singers – these will help you find the confidence to use the stage more. (Watch low range balance/support.)
P&J Music - You looked great, liked the accompaniment, and you were composed on stage. I am not sure about the song choice if I am being honest – didn't really get going for me - but many positive aspects. Click here for the importance of song choices. You need to keep gaining experience, and establish a clearer identity stylistically. Scope for more interaction/connection between the two of you on stage also. Click here for tips on singing in a group.
Alia - With such a rousing reception as you walked on stage, I wanted this to be great. And boy it was! You looked good, began well, took control of the stage, then it got even better. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Sound track was also very good. You were technically strong, and connected with the audience very well. Did you deliver today? Oh yes! Good luck in the next round.
Kirsty - Really liked the original, loved the vocal tone, and clarity of story. I could also sense you were trying to increase the energy level as you progressed, which you found difficult, perhaps a little limiting with the guitar. Pockets of the song became less fluent with extended individual words - aim to maintain continuity when aligning lyric to rhythm and melody - but a stronger act. This will come with practice. Try to attend as many Open Mic Nights as possible. Click here for the importance of Open Mic Nights for singers. Well done.
Camden Singing Contest - Feedback for Singer’s
Laura - A highly sensitive, emotive issue, beautifully presented with a clear sense of heart-felt, in effective musical context. Click here for tips on being able to sing with emotion. This was recognized by all the judges. In terms of competing with the other acts in the show, there was scope for greater range and opportunity to showcase a wider extent of your ability, but an engaging piece of work. Click here for tips on incorporating vocal dynamics in to your performance.
Shifa - Liked the projection, confidence and technical ease. Lovely coloring of sustained values in low dynamic range. Individual and colorful here. Have a think about image to more closely reflect your style, but one to watch. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Clear promise here – a crowd pleaser.
Joelle - I agree you need to set the tone initially, but did the introduction go on for too long where there is such little time to showcase yourself? (Might be worth reconsidering) This said, once you settled into the delivery, it was impressive and I liked the guitar tone supporting comfortable musicality vocally. Click here for guitar playing tips. A stronger act today, scoring well with the judges.
Deedee - Secure technically, performed with confidence, and appropriate body language portraying mood and music. Image did not quite work, and occasional ascending intervals slipped in tone quality, but you can clearly deliver. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help you with the toning issues. Next step is to find more of a commercial edge for your ability. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Split the judges!
Sara - Nice original, atmospheric, lovely tone! You will need an edge to compete but deserved your place in this regional final and you performed well. Try to build on the experience and develop your stage craft, communication, presence and marketability. Click here for stage performance tips for singers and creating a brand as a singer.
Matt Morris - Immediate crowd please and audience participation. Fabulous! Loved the personalization of cover song, strong communication, engagement, and a clear comfort on stage performing. Click here for tips on performing a creative cover as a singer. Great image which works for you, and there is an obvious sparkle. You have done this before Matt, and so you will again – in the area final! Well done…
Gilaks - Lovely image, lovely voice, hard to believe we are still in the 16-20 category! You nailed the vocally delivery and presented with conviction and maturity. Great song choice and lovely expression. Click here for the importance of song choices. Yes, a stronger act in this age group, and will be unlucky not to get through.
Jai Blue - Distinctive, commercial, engaging and an attractive proposition musically. We are down to polish in terms of feedback. The song suited your style, but would struggle I think to sustain interest for a longer show or repertoire. Click here for act image and synchronisation. However, we are judging you on your performance on this one song, and our conclusion is there is much potential here! Good luck….
Musty - Love the personality, loved the vocal and appreciate you were trying to find an angle with the guitar. There are a lot of positives to draw from your performance but the guitar/tones did not quite work for you. Lovely shaping, and your delivery style is engaging. Try performing with other musicians and accompaniment. Click here for tips on using a music instrumental. I can see a performer here – keep going, keep developing and come back next year….!
Beth Walker - Comfortable performance, technically secure. You were prepared, committed, believable and the guitar worked for you. Not sure about song your choice in truth - in this style you need to have something distinctive, and we are sure there is more to you - keep working on it to find it. Click here for the importance of song choices. In some ways you were unlucky as it was a particularly strong show, in this age group. It is quite possible you would have gone through on a different day.
Camden Singing Contest – 21 and Over’s Feedback
Ghetto Boy Green - Great show opener! Full of conviction, clearly established style which worked for you. You are very good at what you do. It sounded great, was delivered well, with great breathing and clarity held throughout. You need to make sure you communicate with greater connection to the audience – the attitude was there, but it felt very remote. Click here for tips on audience engagement.
Harker - Liked the band! Great tempo, pulse, cool bass, nice touches on percussion. Musically blended, with secure vocal authority on top of solid guitar work. Between you held the stage and presented well - would be interested in listening to a wider repertoire. Try and ensure greater interaction between you as a band, you are a good but did come over more as a collection of individuals. Click here for tips on singing in a group.
Rob Hodkinson - Great vocal, you can clearly sing. The band was also great, well prepared and gave good support to the front man. I hoped this would be a fantastic delivery, and whilst there was a clear musicality and commitment, it did not quite reach the high levels I think you are capable of. Give thought to more dynamic contrast in the vocals. Click here for tips on incorporating vocal dynamics in to your performance. Potential here with further work.
Jani Leon - Smooth! Took control of the moment very well, setting expectation and context for a complete change of style. Well done here – an experienced performer at work! Also a good way of handling open instrumental parts, using audience participation and opening conversation, in context of the song, using the tempo of the backing. In terms of the competition, the content may need more of a commercial edge to compete and reach the area final, but definitely a more composed and controlled act tonight. Click here for tips on writing a song. Well done.
John Veryet - Yes – we are working in a live world! You handed the memory loss really well actually, I warmed to you. Of course though the opening attempts were not ideal and this was reflected in some of the judge’s marks, but learn from this experience and make sure you are fully prepared when performing. Be sure to keep practicing so this won’t happen again. The delivery was then very good, full of personality. The image between you did not work for me - no obvious connection, but great interplay vocally. Click here for tips on singing in a group.
James - Please don't apologize for your work before you present it! It may be a defence mechanism, but not appropriate to set the correct tone. Click here for tips on building stage confidence for singers. The song itself was clearly heartfelt, and there is clearly a musician there, but you did not do yourself justice! I am not sure the track gave you full opportunity to showcase your ability either. Click here for some tips on backing music. (Image will not be everybody’s cup of tea!).
Ella - Well timed intro – fantastic! Very brave acappella to open and quite rightly you took control by organising silence in an appropriate way. Click here for tips on an acapella music performance. Very good handling of a live event! Really strong vocal, excellent delivery and overall a more polished act in this age group. Well done.
Ru - Great commitment to reach the event from the airport and also remembering to thank your supporters! Good audience handing, great composure on stage, clearly an established performer in action. Click here for tips on audience engagement. There were many reasons why it is obvious you should be competing in the area final Ru. Good luck….
King Shabazz - Love the chimes - talk about atmospheric! Very effective backing, well-constructed and produced. Good tempo and fab glass smashing effect. That made everybody listen! You do need to work on your image - it is obvious you have given this thought but it is not as good as you are. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Brings you down a bit. Great movement on stage, confident, prepared, an entertainer! Strong act – scored well.
Nylah - A long introduction tonight which you initially handled well with measured spoken parts, but then lost momentum as you waited for the opening line. Distinctive voice, cool image, although still there is still further scope for more alignment with your style – give thought to what identity you are trying to achieve. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. (Watch backing track - did not end when you did?) Click here for some tips on backing music.
Nat - Interesting original, which showcased some versatility vocally and in guitar support! There is a good foundation here on which to build, and with more experience you will be able to see how far your talents can take you. Try also to develop your sense of performance and communication. Click here for stage performance tips for singers and tips on audience engagement. Well attempted Nat.
Camden Singing Contest – Singer’s Feedback
Levina - Tasteful delivery and musical support. Like the image (not absolutely sure about the shoes!) but the overall effect is good. Less convinced about the image of the keyboardist in truth - have a think about a theme – you are both occupying the stage. Click here for tips on performing with music keyboards. Very secure vocal, full of body language and word painting. With adjustments and development, you will be one to watch. Split the judges!
KD - Fantastic dexterity, brilliant! You take this seriously, that is clear to see. You have also obviously worked hard to reach the technical standard you have reached. Clearly comfortable taking risks, and communicating to the audience. This was entirely performance based, intended to entertain, supported by some serious technical ability. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Good luck in the next round.
Bee Bakare - Another great original, presented with presence and measured control. You have a lovely tone, and a range of emotional qualities in your voice. In your chosen style, there needs to be quite a distinctive edge to stand out as a performer, so whilst there is clearly a high caliber musician here, you need to give more thought about how you can present yourself as a more commercial package. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician.
Wayne - What a great committed performance –You will attract a following in your chosen style and we wish you well. Give thought to how you can maximize your target audience and market place and develop a wide repertoire. You are good at what you do, and will be even better with more thought and investment in image. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician.
Natalie - What a lesson in uniqueness! Excellent image, highly distinctive style, great backing supporting a more complex technical display, which you make look easy. Very solid vocal ability, well delivered communicated and articulated. Your sense of performance was captivating. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Of course with uniqueness comes a greater likelihood for difference of opinions, and there was a difference of opinion between some judges. A strong act. Well done.
Marissa - Love the vocal tone and delivery style. You have established a musical identity and have worked hard to develop it to a polished performance. You came on stage quite reserved, gently even, and the metamorphosis was remarkable! Click here for stage performance tips for singers. A very good delivery from a very good performer.
Marissa Di uri - What an astonishing voice! Excellent technical display with effortlessness. To succeed in this genre, there does need to be a really distinctive sense of musicality twinned with a strong commercial angle. We really saw the technical ability – you now need to package this with greater marketability. Click here for act image and synchronisation. Half the judges gave you very nearly top marks, the other half were less convinced, However, on balance your technical ability has seen you into the area final.
