Chelmsford Music Competition – Feedback

Under 16's Feedback

Charlotte Jones – You have a really nice tone, but to demonstrate originality you need to make the song your own, click here for more on performing a creative cover. You also picked a song we’ve all heard many times, so consider doing something a little leftfield, click here for more on the importance of song choice. Performance wise, use that stage! Click here for more on stage performance tips for singers and also click here for more on singing with facial expressions.

Hannah-Mae Duggan – Take care not to rush, so watch your timing and keep composed. Vocally you have a nice tone. Going forward look to develop your projection and range to be even better and be more comfortable sustaining the high notes. A good vocal coach will be able to assist to develop these areas, click here for more on the importance of singing lessons.

Ellie Zaccheo – You conveyed the emotion and the message in the song beautifully, click here for more on singing with emotion. Vocally one of the best of the day, however take care not to do an impression and find your own voice. Click here for more on performing a creative cover and making it your own. You could certainly add in some scats and vocal parts to the breakdown at the end to leave us with a different flavour.

Annabel – Lots of potential here. Performing as much as you can will really help further develop your stage craft. Click here for more on stage performance tips for singers and here for more on singing with facial expressions. Some of the notes you are hitting are exceptional, but you need to commit to every note and phrase with equal commitment.

Lottie – The song has lots of movement and is a dance number however you were too static, more performance on stage and/or dancers would have worked much better here. Click here for more on stage performance tips for singers and click here for advice on dealing with nerves.  More performances will help you develop. You have amazing vocals which shone through during the performance.

Kelsey Crawley – Super vocal control and lovely tone, but the song choice is a very popular one and so it's difficult to impress with, click here for more on the importance of song choice. Take care not to make the mic pop when you go to project your vocals, click here for more on microphone technique for singers.

Thomas Newman-Clark – Can imagine Thomas performing in the west end, if you want to be more than a theatre performer or a tribute act you need to introduce more originality. Click here for more on your song cover – making it stand out and here for more on performing a creative cover.  You worked the stage well and committed to the performance!

Fey – Liked that you made the performance your own, click here for more on song mashups performances.  Not convinced the song choice brought out the sweeter tones in your range though, otherwise it was a committed performance. A better use of dynamics could have kept the interest going throughout to be even better. Click here for more on singing dynamics. Try to only add gimmicks when the vocals are on point otherwise they can be exposed.

Erin Lecount – For having only played the guitar for 2 years, you were fantastic! You remained confident to look up and engage with us as the audience. Click here for more on guitar playing tips. You also made the song your own, click here for more on performing a creative cover, but doing an acoustic version was a great shout.

Lauren – Super power! But click here for more on microphone technique for singers, you need  to draw the mic slightly away from your mouth when you are belting out the projection. Also take care not to force the vocal too hard at the detriment of control. Loved the performance though, so well done.

Brooke Richardson – A very common song choice and unless you are fully warmed up is extremely difficult to hit the top notes comfortably, click here for more on the importance of song choice and click here for more on how to warm up your vocals. It’s important to select a song you connect with and enjoy, but you need to also consider under pressure what is best vocally for you and how popular and often the song is covered. Performance wise use that stage more; click here for more on stage performance tips for singers.

Chelmsford Music Competition – Judges’ Feedback

Josie Davisson – Great to see a well thoughtout cover giving a modern twist to an old classic. Click here for more on performing a creative cover.  A great overall performance with lovely vocals.

Verity Coe – You have poured your emotion into writing this song, however you are not giving us any expression of emotion in your performance of your song, click here for more on the importance of singing with emotion. More performances will assist you to be able to develop your stage craft. Click here for more on guitar playing tips and click here for more of singing dynamics.

16-20 Feedback

The FabSisters – Vocal nectar!! Super harmonies and such richness and depth giving a vocal wall of sound. Just command that stage more, own it like you do the vocal. Click here for more on stage performance tips for singers. Amazing vocals with great connection. Would like to see more of a performance/stage presence.

Georgia – Nice mashup and for more on song mashups click here. Try and reach out to us more as an audience by engaging more, you are looking down too much at the keys; you need to build the confidence to not have to look down at your playing. By not looking up you are making it hard for us to engage with you as a performer. Click here for more on performing with keyboards. A star really is born here as you have amazing vocals. A fantastic image, you looked great on the stage.

Ellie Jane – The song has lots of potential and a nice use of lyrics. You worked  the dynamics well to drive through the chorus and it hooked the audience. Try and not look down as much at your guitar playing and engage us as an audience. Click here for more on guitar playing tips, perhaps look to stand up to give yourself more opportunity for movement and to perform.

21 and Over Feedback

Leila – Good strong voice, however the song choice could have been better as it was a little pitchy at times; but you have a lovely tone.  Click here for more on the importance of song choice. Good stage presence, but you could have done more with your performance to engage the audience more. Click here for more on audience engagement.

Jahnell – Wow! You portrayed the song beautifully, you really sold it. A great performance and vocal tone!

Steph – Excellent technical voice, effortless singing. A great song choice, it suited you well. Just watch your pitching in parts, a good vocal coach will help you with pitching control and projection to make it even better. Click here for more on how to achieve better vocal projection.

Martin Matcham – A good performance, you are a great country artist. However you need to build more confidence and sell the song to the audience more.  Click here for more on audience engagement and for more on stage performance tips for singers.

Luke Harding – Great vocals. Love that you went for it with the performance, but it was not as natural as it could have been, it was too over-staged. But still a very good performance, you would be great in a musical, click here for more on performing on stage for singers.

Cassandra – A pleasant voice, you really got stronger as you went on so well done. However you chose a big song which is very hard to sing; your vocals weren't strong enough for this type of song.  Really liked the arrangement, the end was much better but you need to be careful about song choice, click here for more on the importance of song choice.
