Exeter stage performance tips: National singing competition Open Mic UK held its Regional Finals at Exeter Corn Exchange, Exeter this weekend and saw Exeter’s best singers, songwriters and solo artists take to the stage in their bids to impress a music industry judging panel and capacity crowd.
The regional finals were judged by music industry specialists who have provided stage performance tips for each of the acts that performed. The people the Exeter musicians wanted to impress were Anya Williams from Razzamataz, Chris Harknett from singinglessonsexeter.com, vocal coach Katrina Fry, Tony Lock from One Umbrella Music, vocal coach Chris Gulley and Director of Development at Future Music, David Payne.
Exeter’s regional final was rounded off by our guest act Daughters of Davis.

Jack Retallack – Image needs some work, click here for tips on image. Needs to be more than what you wear to the shops. Let your face show the emotion from the song. Nice light and shade to cover. Really enjoyed performance, so did you, which showed. Could improve more on your stage presence, click here for stage presence.
Skye – Be careful not to be shouty, click here for tips on projection. Use the stage more. Bit of a shaky start but came back into it. Work on your breathing a bit more to help your performance. Unfortunately did not get a connection with the performance. A few tuning issues which came through during your performance.
Lucy Blackler – Would have liked to have heard a more modern song, click here for importance of song choice. Good eye contact. An experienced performance for an under 16. Good to see you use the stage where others may have stayed still. First person who tried to connect with the audience, so well done.
Sasha – Seemed to struggle to sing in same key as the backing music, it got better once you got into it. Use stage more – moved slightly but it’s a big stage so use it, click here for tips on performance. Not sure the image worked for me. Try to think about what you are doing during the instrumentals.
Exeter stage performance tips
Libby Harrogate – Nice eye contact and smile with judges as you started showed you were confident. Nice dress, image worked for song. Nice tone to voice. Move around stage more; click here for tips on performance. Sing to all audience not over their heads. Don’t worry about forgetting a line, nerves do happen to everyone but you handled it well. The show must go on! Try to work on your microphone technique, click here for microphone techniques.
Rory Ryan - Image was very abstract to the song choice, not sure it worked or added to performance, click here for tips on image. Don’t look over everyone’s heads. Nice to see you take mic off stand, use the stage more though at that point. Work to be done on them high notes to deliver more.
Yazzy – Great individuality, nice original song really showcased your vocals. Open eyes more, don’t get lost in your song. Beautiful tone to your voice and lovely performance. Would be lovely to hear more power on your vocals. Great original song. Keep writing them.
Reggie – Song was very popular a few years back and has been covered lots, click here for importance of song choice. Nice shirt, it worked for the image. Look at the audience, not over their heads. No matter how nervous you are you have to look like you want to be there. During an instrumental don’t stand looking bored, make use of that time, click here for tips on performance. Make the song your own on your delivery. A beautiful voice but a few tuning issues.
Daisy and Sarah – Guitarist, make sure you don’t look bored whilst waiting to sing. Nice to look at each other occasionally as you sing, but don’t overdo it. Image tied together. Maybe spread out on stage a little more, it’s a big stage! Lovely harmonies though a little more performance on the stage is needed.
Stella – Great confidence, performed to the judges and the audience. Seemed to enjoy herself which helps us enjoy it too. Image worked. Use stage more. Great potential though sounded a lot like the artist so not sure what you really sound like, click here for tips on performing a creative cover.
Ellie Borlase – Image worked, open your eyes more otherwise we might as well not be watching! Need to perform visually too. Forgot some lines, but possibly due to closing eyes and concentrating too much! Once you start opening your eyes and enjoying it, it will come naturally. Overall lovely performance so well done.
Exeter stage performance tips
Lucianna Kaye – Image worked, let your face show more emotion. Look at the audience more. The guitar seemed a bit out of tune. A very limited range of vocals with only a few notes so some work to be done on the vocals. Think about your mouth on each syllable as it makes the sound mute a bit.
Rebecca Michael – Everyone gets nervous, but you must try your hardest to hide the nerves. Believe in yourself. Use stage more, look at audience – relax and enjoy it, click here for tips on performance. A good strong vocal once it got going so well done for that. Lacking a bit of individuality though this will come with experience.
Sennan Pope – Quirky image which suited the act. Original song, heading in right direction but needs to be more fluent. Look at audience/judges – perform to them not over them. Good confidence and self-belief. Good dynamics and a good delivery of the song.
Aisha – Good use of the stage, great confidence and looked like you wanted to be there. Good eye contact, polished performance. A very engaging performance with excellent use of the stage. Watch the toning on some of the higher notes though overall great performance.
Aspen – Image worked, guitar tuning issues (experienced enough to know better!). It did seem to affect your performance. Great vocal, with brilliant dynamics. The song was a bit too stop start. Would love to have seen your performance without a guitar. Maybe something to consider for next time?
Talitha – Image worked well, would like to see you sing something more commercial, click here for importance of song choice. Performed visually, but could have used stage more. Let your face perform too. Looked confident on the stage though could have used it more.
Georgia F – Great song, lovely image for your act. Great story telling. Nice vocal and light and shade to song. Beautiful tone and great song with a lovely delivery. Altering the melody of the song would be good for the song.
Carmen Marie – Lovely vocal, very mature tone for age. Had confidence and performed to the judges and the audience, but move your hands a little – they stayed by your side the whole time, click here for tips on performance. Take mic off stand and use stage. Take your jacket off for performance.
Skye Phillips – Song didn’t work for me. Image worked well though a few guitar tuning issues. A good vocal but your control isn’t strong, a vocal coach can help you with this, click here for the importance of voice training. Careful to stay near to the mic to have a better sound.
Daisy – Great image, look at the audience. Lovely tone though would have liked to have seen more of the performance, click here for tips on performance.
