London and East England’s music competition – Feedback for Open Mic UK 2014 Under 16s

Please take the feedback on board with a view to helping in the future.
Laura Louise – Look to work on your mic control as you are losing a lot of projection by holding the mic too far from your mouth, click here for microphone techniques. Also look to work with a good vocal coach to improve your tuning and range. Slightly flat at times during the performance.
Zamara and Sara – You guys suffered with tuning issues and at times you just look to force the vocal too hard and that lost you your vocal control. More performance will build the confidence and look to work with a vocal coach to strengthen your vocals so when under pressure you can deliver. You could hear one vocal above the other so need to work on that a bit more as a duo.
Carla – It’s a song that needs even more performance and expression than ever, you need to look to commit to that more. click here for tips on performance and using the stage as you were too rooted to the spot. Click here for advice on doing a creative cover.
Stacey B – Liked the way you sustained the notes it showed good control, click here for information on backing tracks. As the levels seemed a little inconsistent between the different sections of the song. Song has real potential, look to use dynamics to give the song more impact. Towards the end of the song remember to not force it and lose the vocal control. A good song though.
London and East England Music Competition
Jamie Lee – Lovely tone to your vocal, look to start giving more emphasis to your facial expression and performance as going forward that’s where you could improve instantly, click here for tips on facial expression. More performance will help build the confidence to bring more performance and expression. It seemed like you have been singing for years. A very confident performance, so well done.
Francheska Monforte – So much ability for someone 9 years old, often though you are only as good as the song choice, click here for importance of song choice. Good commitment to the performance just look to use the stage more, click here for tips on performance. Keep focused throughout and don’t force it as you did at the end losing a little control.
Mya Boyd – Really good tone and vocals, perhaps you need to turn your attention to giving more expression and performance to bring it alive, click here for tips on facial expression and click here for tips on performance. Try looking on YouTube and studying what other established acts do performance wise to similar songs is a great resource at your fingertips.
ZJT - It’s a skill but mastering mic control will really can improve how you vocal comes across to the audience, click here for microphone techniques. Even though you are limited don’t be frightened to move your body around. Keep your vocal control throughout don’t force it. Great confidence though on the stage.
Zenelle-Renae-A very solid vocal performance however this is such a popular song and one we have heard so many times it’s difficult to be original and/or impress with it, click here for importance of song choice. A big song to choose and felt like it needed a bit more on the delivery.
Harry Cracknell – Song has a lot of potential, a good hook and good structure without being too predictable. Look to use that stage with more purpose to really connect us with your music. A few timing issue with this but got better as the song went on.
Heather – Did a great job juggling playing and expressing emotion in a performance, click here for more information on performing with keys. Vocally you had great control and you made the song your own, click here for advice on how to do a creative cover.
Sophie Elise – Performed it well albeit you could be a little more natural by altering your delivery. Huge potential for 9 and going forward to be even better add in a wider range of dynamics to emphasis the highs and lows in the song, click here for more information on vocal dynamics.
Megan Blair – Nice version of the Grease classic, you have lovely tone and nice how you slide up the notes vocally. Performance wise you need to express more emotion, click here for singing with emotion. The version of the song needed a change up or breakdown as became a little repetitive.
Danielle Davis – Bags of talent but a few areas you could improve in are mic control, click here for microphone techniques and click here for tips on facial expression; you are looking down to much rather than engaging with your audience. Also with the keyboard work take care to keep the tempo consistent. Not totally convinced the song choice was in your best range tone wise to show the sweeter sounded tones in your vocal range, click here for importance of song choice.
Robbie Owens – Good vocally but remaining seated made it a very static performance. The song has a lot of passion and you needed to express much more emotion, we heard the words but they weren’t genuine. With more performance and commitment to the performance you will be able to start to address this.
London and East England Music Competition
Sapphire – You have a wonderful ability to convey the emotion of the song so well! Vocal control and projection is spot on. Just take care with your tuning on sustaining the note. Very comfortable on the stage.
Sanjna Vekaria – Liked that you took the mic off the stand and worked the stage. Mic control wise you were a long way from the mic and this would have affected the projection and quality of your vocal, click here for microphone techniques.
Shannon – A lovely song and you sung it well. Going forward you need to perform and express more to take us on your journey of the songs story, click here for more on expressing emotion and click here for using the stage.
Cameo Williams – You moved well but only on the spot don’t be frightened to expand and use the whole stage, click here for advice on how to do a creative cover. Effortless vocal and well delivered.
JJ and Oscar – Try and demonstrate more chemistry on stage to show a connection; just the odd glance to acknowledge performing together. Made the cover your own and worked the song well with some good dynamics to leave on a high. Very talented bunch so keep doing what you are doing.
Aylis Mae – Great song choice from a previous competition winner Birdy, such a good song! Performance wise it was intense but you could be a little more animated when the song steps up. Lots of emotion went in it so well done.
Dana – Commit more to the performance and really show some passion, more performance will give you the confidence to produce these performances as the potential is there. Need slightly more on your vocal.
Musty – A good connection emotionally to the song, always works well to connect us to you with nice smiles. It would be good if you started considering performing original songs, click here on some advice on writing songs. Click here for more information on audience participation. Great individuality.
Rose-E – Great to hear you doing an original song and it has potential, but needs a little more developing, click here for advice on writing a killer chorus. Also when you write it’s important if you can write songs that are best highlighting the sweeter tone in your range.
Lauren Carter – Very talented girl with a great sound. Liked you made the song your own, click here for more information on performing a creative cover.
Sam Bushell – Good lively song choice which you made your own. Watch the mic control as you turn your head. Good dynamic finish.
Josh – Such improvements with Josh over the last 18 months. Remember to keep composed and not to force the song. Just a little pulling away from the mic too soon is effecting your projection. Click here for more information on audience participation.
Liberty Grant – Such a big song to choose which you did really well with but not necessarily took to a different level, click here for importance of song choice.
