LONDON AND EAST ENGLAND SONG CONTEST

London and East England song contest: National song contest Open Mic UK held its Area Finals at The Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester this weekend and saw London and East England’s best singers, songwriters and solo artists take to the stage in their bids to impress a music industry judging panel and capacity crowd.

The area finals were judged by music industry specialists who have provided song contest feedback for each of the acts that performed. The people the London and East England song contest area finalists wanted to impress were TV personality, lead vocal coach who has worked with Diana Ross and Will Young, CeCe Sammy, Gary Gardner from Together with Harmony, previous winner of Open Mic UK, Natalie Shay and Head of Future Music, Chris Grayston.

London and East England’s Area Finals were rounded off by our guest act and previous winner of Open Mic UK, Natalie Shay.

David Rush – Great image. You’ve got a great future ahead of you. Good stage presence. Silky vocals and a lovely tone, would love to hear you perform you own songs or be more creative with a cover, click here for more information on performing a creative cover. Take care to focus on controlling the vocal throughout, don’t push it and lose the quality of tone.

Leon Jewlz – Bags of potential, try and coordinate the performance on stage more you are kind of following each other at times. Direct your attention at the audience more to gain a better connection, click here for tips on audience engagement.

Miss Magee – Difficult call but would always recommend carrying on, as stopping just highlights the mistake as it did. You have a good vocal but your song choice lacked originality, click here for more information on performing a creative coverClick here for more information on audience participation.

Nadia Rae – Lovely res coming from your vocal combined with a clever mash up, click here for more advice on mash ups but you nailed it with two great musicians which you engaged well with to give good stage chemistry. Can’t wait to see more.

London and East England Song Contest

Jesamine – You guys are great but with four of you should be able to build more of a dynamic and you can be guilty of keeping it on one level, click here for advice on dynamics. Song wise I’d really work on driving through the chorus to make it more instantly catchy, click here for more on getting that killer chorus.

Portia Harry – It’s a very dated and popular song and despite how well it’s sung it’s difficult to get enthusiastic about it. Click here for the importance of song choice and click here for more information on performing a creative cover. Good stage performance.

Matthew Douglas – You have a really good voice, but it’s important you drive the dynamic range even more. Work the song more with your facial expressions, looking at other acoustic acts on YouTube and see what they do when it works is a good resource, click here for more on facial expression.

Jennifer – You are doing the right things but you need to bring sincerity to your expression and emotion feels a little unconnected and you need to work a little harder to convince us. Good vocals.

Mia Laurent – Good song pretty sure it was the same song as the Regional Final or very similar? Vocally you have lots of ability but focus on sustaining the notes you often cut them short. Performance wise commit more to demonstrate the passion in the song.

Beth Keeping – You acted out the song well, feels like it needs a stronger hook for the chorus too many lyrics, click here for help on getting that killer hook for your song. Really good performance.

ShadyKJV – Like the vibe and impact at the start, your diction isn’t so clear, click here for the importance of diction. Need to hear the message and the lyrics are not clear. A committed performance to an act that has a lot of potential. Great stage presence.

Nayna Santana – Good vocally, but transition between songs didn’t link well it was just two unrelated songs slapped together, click here for more advice on mash ups. Good stage performance.

L Kassidy – You have bags of ability, you are a great story teller. Song flowed really well you have some talent just need to add that killer chorus to complete and have a hit, click here for help on getting that killer hook for your song.

Megan Leigh Mason – Quite annoying and catchy at the same time guess that’s what you wanted a marmite song. With better dynamics the song could be delivered across even better.

Dan Cox – Watch your control Dan, your tuning wasn’t perfect or your mic control, click here for more advice on mic control as you were inconsistent around the mic. A good vocal coach will be able to assist you in being even better with your projection and tuning under pressure, click here for importance of voice training. Pick up on these points and you will really improve to get to the next level.

London and East England Song Contest

Joe-Peezy – Talented. It sounded good and authentic but didn’t hear a hook you need to introduce this and you will really have something, click here for help on getting that killer hook for your song. You lost slight projection when performing; click here for more advice on mic control.

Luke Edney – The loop pedal has its place but you need to get the music together super quick and played in perfectly, which you did, click here for more on performing with a loop pedal. Vocally you had a harsh tone to your voice which won’t be everyone’s cup of tea perhaps use the gravely tone more sparingly.

SandraMae – Loved the passion and commitment you gave to the song. Song was good but perhaps a bit too personal and needed a hook we could take away in our heads, click here for tips on song writing. Also click here for help on getting that killer hook for your song.

Ciinderella B – Very good vocals. Fantastic performance from all performers collectively, could feel the passion from all as one. Engagement between performers was spot on along with the dynamics. Click here for more information on audience participation. Great to see someone come to the front of the stage.

Miss Soul – Beautifully sung but it could have been on the foyer of a cruise ship and it needed to have more passion and performance. Try to focus on making the song your own, click here for more information on performing a creative cover.

Pepper – Did you fully warm up as your vocal? At time it felt under strain, click here for the importance of warming up. Song needed a stronger hook for that instant appeal, click here for help on getting that killer hook for your song.

Sam Lunn – Good connection between the two of you. Nicely sung from both performers with a very sensitive performance.

Burridge – Love your image, colourful and cute. Vocally your voice would benefit from being a bit stronger, which would help you with projection and sustaining the notes. A good vocal coach will be able to easily get improvements as the potential is there, click here for importance of voice training.

Bradley Cook – Nice performance, liked that you opted to use a stall. It wasn’t different from the original but you sung it beautifully, click here for more information on performing a creative cover

H Boss – Welcome to the party! Take care not to get out of breathe and it affect your vocals. Dance routine was slick.
