LONDON ENGLAND SINGING COMPETITION    

London England Singing Competition: Music industry judges gave singers feedback at the London England Singing Competition at The Beck Theatre in London this weekend. The London England Singing Competition gave singers and songwriters the opportunity to gain a place at the Grand Final of Open Mic UK.

The music industry judges at the London Enlgand Singing Competition included:

  • Chris Grayston, Head Judge; Music Consultant Chris Grayston who works for Sony, Thames TV, The Voice to name a few.
  • Bobby Mitchell, Talent Talks
  • Anastasia Palikeras, One 7 Management in the US
  • Bertie Worsley, Modest Management
  • Jayne Collins, A&R consultant for major record companies. Put together the Saturdays and managed the Wanted.
  • Laurence Hobbs, Charthouse Music; has worked with acts such as Pixie Lott and Sam Smith to name a few.

London England Singing Competition - Under 16’s Feedback

Lois Star – Good to see you adding elements of performance, look to commit even more! Have a think about your choice of facial expressions and consider not just expressing the pain and anguish but the optimism and positivity in the songs too. Click here for tips on singing with facial expressions. Ideally, audience participation is used once the audience are warmed up (after a few songs) otherwise the impact is quite flat. Sylvie – Great to see you having the confidence to perform your own song, however really consider focusing on driving the lyrical hook, which can be achieved through the arrangement and/or dynamics. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics and writing a song. Also consider giving more expression to really convey the emotion in the song, this will be more engaging for your audience. Mighty Wise –  Good routine and well thought through image! You guys are very unique, which is crucial when developing your artists brand. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Song is a little repetitive even on first listen, look to choose a song that challenges you and you can bring your own spin to as an artist. Click here for the importance of song choices.

Daniel L – Lots of potential for someone so young, you committed well to the performance! However consider ensuring you are conveying the emotion of every line, so we can see different emotions to pain and anguish. Click here for tips on singing with facial expressions. Also consider using the stage more! This will be more engaging for your audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers.

Zoe – You looked nervous on stage, which made it a little uncomfortable as you felt at ease. Click here for tips on how to calm nerves. You have a super vocal so consider performing and practicing as much as you can build you confidence. Click here for tips on building stage confidence as a singer. The Ukulele has its place but is a very thin sound so ensure you are aware of when and when not to use it. You have a beautiful voice, don’t let nerves hide this away.

Leni – A confident performance, demonstrating great comfort on stage. The song didn’t feel like it challenged you or flaunted off your vocals. Click here for the importance of song choices. Leah Jewel – Lots of potential and you committed well to the performance. Remember to use all of the stage to reach out and connect to your audience even more. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Song wise, it was quite theatrical which does means you were acting out a part rather than being original. Kayleigh – The song choice felt a bit slow, which would have benefitted from you injecting greater emotion into the performance. Make sure you don’t force the vocal at the risk of losing control. Nayla – Keys as backing gave it a great live feel! Click here for tips on backing music. As a performer try and be more animated and give us more movement. You don’t have to be rooted, you can always take the mic off the stand, step back and really show us the passion that is in the song. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. You have a great voice, well done.

Anush Hydros – Super vocals and it felt you connected well to the song which was fantastic for someone of your age. Click here for tips on being able to sing with emotion. Look to work on the performance in the instrumental gaps, in particular. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. If you hold back at times vocally you can really drive through the chorus and hook. A great performance, you have real potential.

Lauren Hilliard – Vocally you have nice tone but take care of your pitch and flow, needs to be a little crisper. Work with a singing teacher to bring the good part of your vocals out. Click here for tips on choosing the right singing teacher for you. Performance wise show us the passion in the song, you need to show us a connection and convey the emotional message. Khuwayne Linton – Good to see you taking the mic off the stand and working the stage. The song choice felt a little laboured and needed you to bring more life to the song by adding more dynamics. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Liked that you picked a less obvious cover song, this will show us your originality as an artist. Click here for performing a creative cover as a singer

Ella Massingham – Nicely performed and we could see your connection to the emotion of the song. Look to use your eyes to reach out to the audience and connect them. Click here for the importance of eye contact. During your performance, try to incorporate more movement, only at the end did you take the mic off the stand. Whilst on the stand consider rocking and moving back, all manner of movement that helps to convey the emotion in the song. Click here for stage performance tips for singers

Millie Kirkpatrick – Nice choice of song, would have liked to have seen you made it even more unique. Click here for more on performing a creative cover as a singer. The guitar of course gave it a live feel, however could have flowed a little better as sounded a little out tune. Click here for tips on standard guitar tuning

Ava Jones – Vocally keep focused on your pitch and look to develop your projection to be even better! Work with a singing teacher, they will help you improve these aspects of your vocals. Jessica Richardson – A strong committed performance. Consider expressing the feelings of the lyrics - if it makes you feel good, then express the happiness! Click here for tips on singing with facial expressions. Look at your breathing technique, you're giving too much in some notes, when you should be using it on others. Phoebe Austin – Great idea for a mash up, although quite diverse! There needs to be more of a soft transition between each song, it feels too stop and start at the moment. Work on this and you will show your audience your great capability as an artist! Click here for tips on song mashups. Overall a good performance, you have potential. 

Arya – When performing a well known song, you are most likely going to come up short to the original. This is nothing on your singing ability, but you always will be compared to the artist. Have a think about choosing a song that you can bring your own spin to as an artist, and show us your originality. Also when performing a theatrical song you are performing a part and not being yourself. We would like to see more of you, so be more original. Click here for performing a creative cover as a singer

Livi Khattar – This type of song is all about dynamic change throughout the song, to take you up and down like a rollercoaster. A great reference would be the lead singer from London Grammar for a great example of bringing such depth to a vocal as you have the ability to do this! Mitchell Winn – Good song choice to show off a sensitive side to your singing. Nice try going up a gear however it didn’t sound as comfortable vocally for you. Paighton Green – Shaky start as you started in the wrong key. Work with a singing teacher to iron out this minor issue and improve your performance. Kayla – Commit more to the performance, give us more expression and performance. This would add more emotion, and therefore be more engaging for your audience. Roddy Ryan – Didn’t feel like your best as you have so much ability! Songs didn’t flow as well as they could have, think about choosing songs that will give a smoother transition. Amber Atkinson – You have a terrific vocal! Performing a well known song is difficult as you are most likely to come up short to the original. Choose a song that you can bring your own spin to as an artist, and show us your originality. Singing theatrically means you are performing a part and not being yourself. Charlie Mepham – You looked very nervous on stage. Keep practising and performing in front of people so you become more confident. Click here for tips on how to calm nerves. Lashayah – Take care to not over stretch your vocal; never push the vocal for a bit more power at the cost of control. William Robert – Watch your timing and look to develop your projection by working each week with a good singing teacher. Click here for more on choosing the right singing teacher for you. Ethan Peters – Lovely control in your vocal! Amazing tone in all of the ranges, you sing clearly with clarity. It was quite a static performance, look to use the stage and give us more movement. Performance wise you are going from side to side with your hands, you need to vary the movement and practice working a performance with purpose and emotion. Zoe – You have strong vocals Zoe. Good song choice, we could feel your connection to the lyrics. Click here for tips on being able to sing with emotion. Vocally keep focus on your pitch and control to ensure don’t lose your tuning, ensure work daily on practising; warming up the vocal each day (and of course warm the vocal down). Darcelle – Loved the reverse strings and the lyrics flowed well. Look to climb even more into the chorus to really make that sound out. Need to bring out the hook as much as you can as the song has lots of potential. Click here for tips on writing a song. Vocally, you have a fine tone and crisp sound to your vocal, take care to not push too hard and control. Overall, a great performance. 

Dana Ali – You sing nicely but to maximise the clarity and projection of your voice just refine and practice your mic control. Be sure to keep the microphone close to your lips to maximise projection. Click here for microphone techniques. Song choice try and pick something more leftfield as a very popular cover. Joelle – You have a great talent, we love your tone! A very messy start, look to rehearse so the performance is slick and professional. You have a lot of soul in your vocal but the performance felt a little lacking without some original music. Click here for tips on writing a song. Your vocals are great, just focus on perfecting the performance, and you will have great potential.  

Amber – You have great smoky quality to your vocals. You have an ability to portrait a story which is a great ability, now the task is to drive through the hook to make it even more catchy. Arkuen – Cool start – love the vocal runs. Maybe you are missing an opportunity to perform even more so its visually pleasing. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Work on opening your mouth slightly more, we will be able to hear your sound clearer. Click here for tips on being able to improve diction. Song is a little abstract but intriguing! You have something very unique Arkuen!

Nikki –  Lovely sentiment to the song, the chords on the guitar seemed quite basic and perhaps more key changes and a more developed structure would enrich the song. Molly – Amazing look and vocals. Not quite sure why these two covers were put together as they didn’t flow or constitute a mash up. Look to choose songs that you can build a smooth transition. Click here for more on song mashups. You have a lot of ability Molly, you just need to show it to us!

KyMusic – Amazing performance. It always shows lots of ability performing a loop pedal but also shows a flaw in the performance as a glitch got played into the loop. You are a star in the making, we’ve got to look out for you! 

Izara – You expressed the song excellently, don’t hang back so much on the stage and look to come to the front of the stage. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. You had some good moves so start believing in yourself and think about how to incorporate this aspect of your performance with your image. Zoe Barry – You have a nice tone, look to work on developing your projection and range vocally along with ensuring you give every note the same attention; which a good singing teacher they will be able to assist you to be even better. Alia Lara – If I could have given it more marks I would have, for performing a creative cover, it sounded wonderful. Keep up with this originality. No existent eye contact and expression, means that the audience can’t identify with the emotions in the song. July Jones – Your lovely and original, you have a cool look. Bold backing on keys that gave you instant impact. Click here for tips on music keyboards. Song wise, it felt a little forced in places and it was hard to hear the message and lyrical hook. Click here for tips on writing a song. Your vocal felt under strain throughout so look to work on your projection to be even better.

Christina Laurie – Backing on Cajon s having a blast great performance! The backing performers gave it a real live and credible feel. Click here for performing with a music instrumental. Good change up in the performance to make things a bit more lively! Comfortable performance which you expressed well for an enjoyable performance. Well done. 

Gilska – You looked amazing! Vocally look to develop your tone and projection to be even better, work with a good singing teacher, they will be able to assist you with this. Maddy Rose – Good vocals, but work on really controlling those belts. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help control your vocals at the pivotal moments. Em Lawrence – Great vocal gymnastics! Your guitar sounded a little out of tune which detracted from the performance. Click here for tips on standard guitar tuning. Shifa & Cidem Music – You have a great look and you have amazingly controlled vocals. Keys gave it a live feel, the medley would have been better if could have performed a mashup. London Singing Competition – 21 and Over’s Feedback

Josh Tom – Liked you made the cover your own! Click here for more on performing a creative cover as a singer. Good dynamics to help the song and performance flow, in particular a good use of your change of tempo. Look to give us more eye contact to help your audience engage to your performance. Dwayne – You have a lovely manner and a soulful vocal. Look to get more intent in your eye and express the emotion and message in the song. Click here for the importance of eye contact. Ariane Barnes – Song was catchy and liked the backing vocals backing up your top lines! Although the longer the performance went on the more repetitive it became which suggests an over using of the lyrics. Click here for tips on writing a song. Bass player smoked out some cool vibes, could maybe look to refine his movement rather than just repeating to forward his head from his neck. This would be more engaging for your audience. Bethan-Wyn Music – A good sound, would have liked to have seen more change in dynamics, using less in certain places to give more emphasis to the hook. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Really try to work on expressing every emotion in each line of the song. Click here for tips on being able to sing with emotion. You have a great voice, adding emotion will better this performance.

Amie Fuller – Nice melody to the song, look to try and vary the phrasing and delivery to give more dynamics. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Don’t restrict your movement! Just because you are playing guitar, doesn’t mean you can’t move away from the mic and commit more movement in general. This will be more engaging for your audience. Briggs – You have a good sound but the song isn’t varied enough to start with. A good change up but it doesn’t really have you hooked in enough. Performance would benefit from subtle dynamics throughout the song, so its not just in sections. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. You have great potential Briggs.

Sarah Lowe – Nice song choice which suited the sweeter tone in your vocal. Look to develop your projection and range which with practice every day and help from a singing teacher you can achieve. Harry Smith – You have a quirky image which you need to play on, and perhaps over flow it more into your performance. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Lady Dreamer – It felt like the song needed more focus on the hook, perhaps bring in a vocalist to give more contrast vocally. We needed to hear a greater dynamic range in your song, this will be more engaging for your audience and mean you can flaunt your vocals. Click here for tips on using vocal dynamics. Good message in the song and with a bit of reworking, it has potential.  

King Shabazz “The hip hop traveller” – Not much rapping going on for the first minute, look to find something that will begin your performance more confidently. Work on your strengths more, by using moves rather than pacing. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Vocally you need to strengthen your projection. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help strengthen your vocals. Good performer and good stage presence. Perhaps consider dancers and a routine to look more slicker!

Ella McCready – Musically, your great! You and sung very well. We’re not sure other than being an acoustic version of the original, their was much creativity to your performance. Look to choose a song that you can bring your own spin to, and show us your originality as an artist. Margaret Meg – A massive song to cover and you needed to climb into that top note! It felt like you struggled to give the projection and power required. Liked you altered the timing and delivery but the cover wasn’t sufficiently different from the original to be viewed as a creative cover. Click here for performing a creative cover as a singer.  

Mimi – Song was different, remember to focus on driving through the hook as potentially there are parts to really grab and stick with us. Click here for tips on writing a song. Work the dynamics to really drive through that hook, think maybe a breakdown before driving the hook would be more engaging. KD – Liked the way your performance flowed and you how you worked the stage. This was very engaging for your audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Perhaps look to let it breathe at times with a breakdown. This will give your performance more of a dynamic range, thus being more intriguing to us. 

Ru – The hook in the chorus is good, it might be worth looking to get it in early. Your performance would benefit from backing it up with some guitar riffs and hooks. It is critical that you get this right during a competition. You have great potential Ru, keep at your song writing. 

Andrea Pell – You have nice tone! You need to take care of your diction and work on developing your projection. Stacey Lee – Need to find yourself as an artist as doing cover versions aren’t going to gain interest, you have a great vocal and commitment that would! Leslie Kunz – Nicely performed! Click here for more on performing with music keyboards; don’t let the keyboard limit your movement and ability to perform. Marisa Di Muro – You dressed for the performance and looked great! Vocally you have great control. Theirs so denying you have a pheromonal voice. The genre of music does make it hard for you to shine at being original. Click here for tips on performing a creative cover as a singer.

Ami Lorenn – Be good to get more performance from you Ami. Use the stage and your facial expressions to show us your passion and the portray the emotions in the song to the audience. Your song has some great lyrics! Look to develop the dynamics to sustain the interest throughout. Click here for more on vocal dynamics. Guitar work could have flowed better! Get your overall performance to match your great vocals, and you will do well. 

Sophie Bea – Thought your image was great and you had a super vocal. Lots of movement in the song choice, so look to portray this in your performance. Jay Hall – Your creative cover was nice, and its great to see some smiles on stage! Performance wise it was too static and you need to get your facial expressions on point so it reflects, reflecting each emotion in your face is crucial to communicate to your audience. Rippz – Your song has potential! You need to arrange it so its not too repetitive, but enough times so you can sing along to it! Click here for tips on writing a song. Natalie May – This instrument sounds great! It was refreshing to see something different. We could feel a real sensitivity. Click here for tips on being able to sing with emotion. Men at Risk – What a good bit of fun! You guys would make a great evening of entertainment. However, your not offering us anything original. All singers and songwriters successful through the London England Singing Competition progressed onto the next stage of the competition at the Grand Final Showcase which will be held at The NEC Birmingham on Saturday 28th January!
