LONDON SINGERS WANTED TO IMPRESS AT THE OPEN MIC UK REGIONAL FINALS
Singers from London wanted to impress music industry judges at the 16-20 Regional Finals!
London Singers Wanted: Open Mic UK held its Regional Finals at The Beck Theatre, London. London’s finest singers wanted to impress in their bids to impress a music industry judging panel and capacity crowd.
The regional finals were judged by music industry specialists who have provided stage performance tips for each of the acts that performed. The people the London musicians wanted to impress were Drive time presenter Westside FM Peter Slenett, WS Music’s Winston Sela, vocal tutor Lee Webster, Dominique Pizzinat from The School of Rhythm, vocal coach from The Voice Jay, Zydre Sicher from Artistic Me, representatives of Samurai Sound and international music examiner Stuart Slater.
London’s regional final was rounded off by our guest act Ben McKelvey.

Pippa – Credible interpretation. Slightly long intro and immediate low range needed to gain in energy. Remember you’ve only got a few minutes, so get stuck in straight away. Format of the piece was also too broken up for me and whilst the delivery settled, it needed too much to recover momentum. Watch material choice….
Aaran – Took control of the stage and nice touches in the original. Secure delivery and quite liked the original but in your style you need an edge, click here for tips on image.
Rohan – Like the range and contrast, plus some colour in your voice added character. A safe performance today. Try to connect with the piece and the audience more - scope for greater energy and engagement, click here for tips on audience engagement.
Faye Weston – Lovely tones in chest voice, including colour and ornamentation. Low range needed more conviction and support. Try to present your stronger chest voice to give stronger initial impression, a vocal coach can help with this, click here for the importance of voice training.
London singers wanted - feedback
Tala – High risk with opening language and audience participation, but for you it worked….and you received the laughs, click here for tips on audience engagement. Good story telling skill. You need to concentrate on the vocal strength as well as the composition work. Something there but suggest you develop further with advice and management. Split the judges.
Jenkelie – Please don't apologise on stage! I understand your intentions, but either avoid the long introduction or use the stage and your presence to maintain interest. You’ve only got a couple of minutes to impress, so try and get stuck in straight away. Liked the image and tone but a little safe. Didn’t get going for me.
Freddie – Jessie J meets brit pop…liked this. Would like to see a longer set. Image suits. Clear identify and style. Commercially attractive.
Shaun – Considered, measured and interpreted with a personal quality. Secure , ornamented vocals. Watch plosive consonants in the mic, but more than that, you now need to develop an image and stylistic identity, click here for microphone techniques and click here for tips on image. Needs a commercial edge.
Claudia – Great introduction and song choice. Attention to image which worked. Watch consistency of intonation and mic technique on a big stage; click here for microphone techniques. Aim also for greater sense of performance – a static mic reduces the size of the stage for you; click here for tips on performance.
House Medicine – Great image, stylistic and lovely smooth vocal tone. Sustained notes capture the sparse phrasing – well done here. Accompaniment needs to fit the overall performance more. Image here needs to work also. Top half for sure.
Irene - Liked the image and stage confidence. Unfortunately your intonation and intervallic movement was less secure today, detracting overall. A vocal coach can help with this, click here for the importance of voice training.
London singers wanted - feedback
Anna – Like the guitar tone – in fact I liked this overall but the judges were split right down the middle. I think the material choice did not allow you to fully perform, and there is room for more colour and individual brush strokes in the phrasing.
Darcy – Lovely articulation and diction. A pleasant natural vibrato, and dynamic shaping within phrases as you moved through the break. Well considered and controlled here. Try to build on your strong technical foundation with more emphasis on performance.
2 Way Street - Great consideration to image, filled the stage, interesting act with an edge. More communication between the two of you would I think add benefit, click here for tips on duos or groups. It looks a little too much like two individuals. Commercial potential here though in bucket loads….
Kanma – Charming tone – I think you can do a lot more but this didn’t show your full potential today. Stick at it…..
Leon – Lots of energy – great performance. You clearly enjoy what you do and this came through during your performance.
Chennez – Great beat boxing, confidence, individual contribution, harmonies on point and a commercial act – very good!
