MAKING THE SONG YOUR OWN - SOUTHERN ENGLAND FEEDBACK

Making the song your own - Feedback for the Open Mic UK Southern England 21 and Over Area Finals!

MAKING THE SONG YOUR OWN

Making the song your own - Southern England Feedback: National singing competition Open Mic UK held its Area Finals at Ferneham Hall this weekend and saw Southern England’s best singers, songwriters and solo artists take to the stage in their bids to make the song their own and impress a music industry judging panel and capacity crowd.

The Area Finals were judged by music industry specialists who have provided feedback for how each of the acts that performed made the song their own. The people the Southern England Area Finalists wanted to impress were Group arts editor for Sussex Newspapers Phil Hewitt , Sam Black  from DK Music Academy, Festival producer and artistic director Rosalind Fountain, Gareth Henderson from River Studios and Head of Future Music, Chris Grayston.

Southern England’s Area Finals were rounded off by our guest act, previous Open Mic UK Under 16’s winner Natalie Shay.

Roxanne Phillips – Quirky and fun with a nice tone and great diction. Personality was shining through. Liked the theme of the song but it’s lyrically too simple, click here for tips of songwriting

Hollie Cole – Vocally you are really strong, but take care with song choice as too often acts pick popular iconic songs which are so difficult to impress to anywhere near as good as the original artist, click here for the importance of song choice. Remember to use that stage, for more ideas and tips on stage performance click here. Try and use more facial expression and look like you are enjoying it.

Kane Tracey – Don’t be frightened to use your eyes more to connect with your audience. Really liked the song, but look to work the dynamics more to really give the chorus a change up and lift, click here for more information on vocal dynamics. Be careful of your diction, click here for tips on vocal diction.

Daniel Thomas Gray – An impressive start and you conveyed the story of the song well, and it was well illustrated with grace by the dancer. Good interaction between performers. A very original performance, just try and be more natural.

Jo Carson – Lots of potential, just work on dynamics and timing to drive the chorus, click here for more information on vocal dynamics. Nice expression at times but keep it up throughout to express the emotion of each line.

Darren Rampton – Would go either backing track or live as it comes across too crowded. Performance wise move appropriately as much as you to aid in showing emotion and passion in the song, click here for more advice on audience participation. Push the high sections – have some power. It was nice to hear an up-tempo original. You looked as though you enjoyed it.

Callum Stock – You have lots of potential. You don’t have to overwork the notes as it can come across forced, it’s far better to be natural. Great backing on vocals and guitar. Wasn’t really a mash up, click here for more on mash up songs.

Dazza – Would go either backing track or live as it comes across too crowded. Performance wise move appropriately as much as you can to aid in showing emotion and passion in the song. Liked the theme of the song but it’s lyrically too simple, click here for tips of songwriting and click here for help with coming up with that killer chorus.

Iain Scott – Love the control and the way you play the guitar is effortless. Superb use of range and a great song. A strong contender for the Grand Final if you nail it on the day!

Tom Reilly – Good personality in your performance, but take care with song choice, too often acts pick popular iconic songs which are so difficult to impress to anywhere near as good as the original artist or be different with. Click here for the importance of song choice. and click here for tips on making a cover your own.

Deano – Liked the depth, commitment and passion in your vocal. You don’t always have to demonstrate the pain in the song, try and show the lighter shade of the emotion too to give greater performance dynamic. A great performance, but try and look up more too we want to see you!

Making the Song Your Own - Southern England Feedback

Busker Tom – Liked the song but the image and song does have quite a dated feel. Perhaps it needs a modern twist otherwise it isn't bringing anything new. Click here for the importance of image.

The Crowe – Liked the theme of the song but it’s lyrically too simple, click here for tips of songwriting and click here for help with coming up with that killer chorus. Work on your breathing control a little more and try not to rush, click here for breathing exercises. The message is right, the delivery was wrong.

Sean Parker – Liked the way you built the song with a nice progression and nice dynamics. Vocally it was a bit thin to start with but it warmed up nicely. Watch your mic control as you were losing projection at times, click here for more on mic control.

Beau Halford – Your song is good but it is a little like Prodigy's Outer space. Like the way you quicken the pace within the lines, it makes you unique. Maybe try and write a new chorus as the hook was a bit weak. Nice performance though.

Coral – Good commitment to the performance and use of the stage. A very believable performance, but the hook didn’t quite jump out. Click here for tips of songwriting and click here for help with coming up with that killer chorus.

Catherine Jones – Love the tone in your vocal and you can feel the power. You need to soften the intensity in the eyes and get in line with the emotion you want to convey in the song. Look back at footage and film practice sessions to get that on point, click here for more information on facial expression.

Atlanta Rose – Really good song, with better mic control you could have come across with much better projection and quality, your mic was too far from your mouth, click here for advice on mic control.

Si-McLean – Liked the theme of the song although perhaps it is too hard to relate to and is lyrically too simple. Click here for tips of songwriting and click here for help with coming up with that killer chorus. Try and use your eyes more to connect us and to convey the emotion in the song.

Lorin Forster – Great vocal range, but the upper range needs warmth. Try and use more dynamics, it was all on one level, click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Couldn’t relate to the song instantly and it didn’t seem to have a lyrical hook to stick in your head. Click here for tips of songwriting and click here for help with coming up with that killer chorus.

Sammy P – It's original to sing in a different language. The start of the song is one of optimism and you are conveying no emotion facially at all, click here for more information on facial expression and what it can bring in terms of connecting to your audience. You need to take the mic off the stand and work the stage, click here for more on stage performance.

Alex Attrill – Bit of an Olly Murs number, watch him perform as he sells himself with his personality like Robbie Williams. Work that stage more as you were very much rooted on the spot, be cheeky! Click here for more on stage performance.. Great to see you try and do something else rather than another performance behind the keys.

Steph – Take care with song choice too often acts pick popular iconic songs which are so difficult to impress to anywhere near as good as the original artist. Click here for the importance of song choice. and click here for tips on making a cover your own. With better mic control you could have come across with much better projection and quality, your mic was too far from your mouth, click here for advice on mic control.

Joe Waller – Lovely vocal tone and a good connection to the song. We were waiting for a change up to really take the performance to another level which never came unfortunately. click here for more on vocal dynamics. Try and keep your eyes open and smile more, but a lovely, sincere performance.
