MANCHESTER MUSIC COMPETITION

Feedback from the Manchester Music Competition.

Manchester Music Competition: Singers and songwriters from North West England & Scotland performed to impress music industry judges and a capacity crowd at the Manchester Music Competition at the Royal Norther College of Music in Manchester this weekend. The Open Mic UK Manchester Music Competition gave singers and songwriters the chance to gain a place at the Open Mic UK Grand Final.

The music industry professionals judging the Manchester Music competition were:

  • Joseph Emsden from Yamaha
  • Bob Young a Vocal Coach & Performer
  • Jill Bowyer from Salford City Radio
  • Stacey-Lianne a Vocal tutor

Manchester Music Competition – Under 16’s Feedback

Distinct - Confident performance, you harmonised well and had good projection throughout your performance. Your harmonies were good but could do with a little more practice. This was a really good song choice for you, look to start writing and performing your own songs. Click here for tips on writing lyrics - getting started.

Lily - Great song choice, you have great individuality and powerful vocals with a lovely tone and good control. Liked the arrangement, it was clearly well thought out. Look to really work the stage during your performance, click here for tips on performing on stage for singers.

Isaac Kennedy – Great guitar musicianship and good use of the loop pedal, you have a sweet tone to your voice. Slightly nervous start but you improved as the performance continued; click here for tips on dealing with nerves

Lauren Glynn –  You have a very powerful voice which you controlled well, this perhaps wasn’t the best song choice for you to really showcase your talent, click here for more on the importance of song choice. After a slightly nervous start you grew in confidence throughout the performance. Good tone and projection. 

Megan – Confident performance of a well written and brilliantly played original. You have great vocal control and a lovely tone to your voice. Great image and after a slightly nervous start you grew with confidence, click here for tips on dealing with nerves

Eilidh Gough – Great song choice and a really interesting interpretation. You have a beautiful voice, good control and tone. Very confident performance and your image is great, click here for more on act image and synchronisation and how it can be hugely beneficial.

Joslyn – You have a very strong voice for your age and chose a great song to really show your talent off. Very confident performance with good vocal projection, control and tone. Try to work on your eye contact during your performances to really connect with the audience, a good article for your to read would be why is eye contact important.

T'mya Fyffe – You have good classical vocal skills and chose a brilliant song to really highlight your talent. Try to work on you projection and confidence during your performances, click here for adive on how to achieve better vocal projection. Great vocal and breathe control in those difficult sections on the song.

Millie-Mae – You have a very powerful voice, great image and bags of confidence when you perform. This was a great song choice for you which you sang with good control and a nice vocal range and tone. Try to work on your microphone technique so that is doesn’t hinder your vocal performance. Daniel – This was a great song choice for you which really highlighted your fantastic voice. A very confident performance. You are a good entertainer with a nice vocal tone, powerful voice and good vocal projection. Chiara McDougall – A very confident performer with great microphone control and technique, click here for more on microphone technique for singers. Nice song choice that really highlighted your vibrato, control and tone. Try to work on matching your image to your sound, click here for more on the importance of act image and synchronisation.

Ciaran Heggarty – Great audience interaction throughout a very confident performance. You vocals are strong and you have great control and range, but could be improved with the help of a vocal coach to really reach your full potential, click here for more on the impoartance of singing lessons.

Rossi Walsh-O’Neill – Good eye contact and engagement with the audience throughout a confident performance. You used the stage really well; click here for tips on performing on stage for singers. Great projection, strong range and good vocal control.

Taylor Gilmour – You have a very powerful voice, but be careful of your microphone control, click here for more on microphone technique for singers. Great vibrato and great confidence throughout your performance, with good use of gestures to really convey the meaning of the song. 

Amy Fullagar – You have a lovely tone to your voice and a strong belt. Confident performance but perhaps this song wasn’t the best choice to really showcase your talents, click here for more on the importance of song choice. You used the stage well throughout your performance and showcased good vocal projection throughout.

Manchester Music Competition – Feedback 16-20

FAITH – Great individual vocals and good, tight harmonies. A confident well-rehearsed performance executing great projection, range, tone and vocal control. You are very engaging on stage but it would be good to see you engage more with each other, click here for tips for duos and groups. Great look, very on trend.

Isabella – You have an incredible tone and honesty to your voice which you highlighted well throughout a confident performance. You showed great musicianship and vocal control throughout. Great song choice for you, click here for more on the importance of song choice.

Illunis – Nice song and great individuality. Harmonies were great and you have a lovely tone which you executed well with great projection and good vocal control. Loved your image, it matches your style of music and performance well, click here for more on the importance of act image and synchronisation.

Steph Ball – Confident engaging performance, you really enjoyed yourself and it’s great to see that come across. You engaged well with the audience and have a great attitude towards performing. Great vocal tone, control and projection throughout.

Serena Gilchrist – It’s great that you performed your own composition and confidently too. Very powerful voice which you controlled well with good projection, tone and microphone technique. Haydyn Biddle – Great song choice which you covered well and really put your own spin on it, Click here for more on the importance of performing a creative cover. You have a good vocal range, fantastic image and great vocal control. A very confident, enthusiastic performance. 

N.E Girls – You harmonised together really well throughout your performance, great vocals and nice projection. Loved the choreography which was clearly well rehearsed and thought out. Annalise & Jayda – Great song choice, you have good individual vocals and harmonised together really well with great tone, projection and vocal control. Try to work on your stage presence and really own that stage when performing, click here for tips on performing on stage for singers.

Ruth Grand - It's great to see someone performing an original at this stage in the competition, well done. You have a very distinctive voice which you highlighted well with a powerful performance. Great musicianship with the keyboard and a really nice balance of vocals and ketys. Hayleys Ovens – You have a lovely tone to your voice with great diction and control. You performed the song well but this perhaps wasn’t the best song choice for you to really show off your talent, click here for more on the importance of song choice. Performing as much as possible with really help with your confidence and presence on stage, click here for more on the importance of regular performances such as open mic nights

Sun Moon & Talia – Well done for performing an original song. You have a fantastic, very distinctive vocal which you highlighted well with good control. Great image that really fits with your act, click here for more on act image and synchronisation and how it can be hugely beneficial.

Kayleigh – Confident performance, great image and nice falsetto. You have a very powerful voice, good vocal range and great technique however, this may not have been the best song choice to fully show off your vocal ability, click here for more on the importance of song choice. A very passionate and engaging performance throughout. 

Mel Aspinall - Confident performance and a great song choice to really show off your talent. You have a nice vocal range and good control. Be careful not to push your vocal too much to avoid it sounded strained. Great stage presence throughout. Jordan Rawson – Brilliant musicianship! Great performance and very confident on stage but try not to copy the artist you are covering, when performing a cover try and put your own stamp on it, click here for more on performing a creative cover. You have a really unique style to your voice with great projection and tone. 

Jessie Jamieson – Fantastic image, great song choice and nice projection. You have a really strong vocal range with good control and a nice tone. Wez Canton – Nice song choice, you have great stage presence when performing and your confidence really shines through. Great musicianship and really good audience interaction and engagement throughout, click here for tips on audiene engagement.

Katie Stelfox - Great stage presence, you really owned that stage, brilliant confidence. You have a very powerful voice with a great range and tone which you controlled well throughout your performance. A very individual and remememberable performance. Cat Ogden – You look really natural on stage and have a confidence that shines through. Loved the spin on the song that you were covering, very creative, click here for more on performing a creative cover. Powerful vocals with great falsetto, diction and vocal control. 

Nicola Jayne – Beautiful timeless vocal! Soothing tones accompanied with a confident and emotional performance. Good image that really matches your performance and musical style, click here for more on act image and synchronisation and how it can be hugely beneficial.

Jordan – Good song choice, nice projection and good individuality and spin on the cover of the song, click here for more on performing a creative cover. Great stage presence and confidence throughout, beautiful tonality to your voice.

Christine Bray – Loved the theatrical aspect of your performance. You have a strong vocal and great tone to your voice. Very confident performance with great stage presence, click here for more on performing on stage for singers. Lovely image that matched your performance well. 

Keys to Alcatraz – Confident performance, strong musicianship and brilliant vocals. Great song choice to really show off your talents. You harmonised well together with good tone and projection. Rob King – Good song choice and a great image. You have great vocal control, technique and range which you executed well throughout your performance. Confident stage presence, you performed the song really well, click here for more on performing on stage for singers.

Luke – You conveyed the emotion in the lyrics really well throughout your performance. A well written original with good tempo. You have a nice tone to your voice which you highlighted well with good projection and control. Good stage presence and confidence throughout.

Sophie Maria – You owned that stage! Great presence and confidence throughout your performance well done. You have a powerful vocal and you could really feel the emotion and soul within the lyrics. Race The Horizon – Great image and your confidence shone throughout your performance. You harmonised together really well on a well written original song. All singers and songwriters successful from the Manchester Music Competition progressed onto the next stage of the competition, the Open Mic UK Grand Final  Which will be held at NEC Birmingham 23rd January 2016.
