Manchester Singing Contest: Music industry judges gave singers feedback at the Manchester singing contest at The Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester this weekend. The Manchester singing contest gave singers and songwriters the opportunity to gain a place in the Area Finals of Open Mic UK.

Manchester Singing Contest - Under 16’s Feedback

Lucas Burridge – We loved the song choice! You have a great image, and a strong vocal range. You started slightly pitchy, but this could be down to your nerves. Settling those nerves before you begin your performance will better your overall audition. Click here with some tips on how to calm nerves. Fiona Woodburn – Beautiful voice and strong potential! You have a lovely image. Try to use your body language to communicate with your audience. You were also stood still for most of your performance, using the stage will make your performance more engaging to your audience. Cerys Stockton – Lovely intro. You have great tone to your voice. The first verse seemed to be quite low for the song, make sure you pick the right key for your song choice. Miles Pooler – Outstanding performance! You have great potential! Your voice has a great projection, with a nice range and control. Try to avoid Americanism in your pronunciation of words. We loved your expressions while performing, it gave character to your performance!

Georgia Bunnell – Stunning vocals and performance! Very impressive. You have great vocal control and your very confident. Such authentic care to such an emotional song. Nicole Mckay – You have a lovely tone to your voice. We loved your song choice! Try to work on your nerves. Charlotte Ryan – Time is on your side and the fact you’re already impressing at ten is amazing! Perform at every opportunity, film yourself and look back to analyse. Glitch - Great vision, your vocals work well lyrics are heavy and emotional to help us connect us to your song! We loved your image! More female vocals required. Commit even more to lift the song and change the dynamics as it goes a little flat at times. Simone – We liked your image and song choice. You need to work hard on your vocals to develop your range, tuning and projection. A good singing teacher will be able to assist you to be even better. Friendship Girls - So confident to get up on stage at your age! You are performing more than acts who are far older. We also loved your image! Georgia Ridlehalgh - Super tone and projection, look to get closer to the microphone to assist and add to your projection! Click here for more on microphone techniques. Singing classical does make it hard for us to see your originality as an artist. Performance wise, we would like to see even more expression from you. Try to commit more with your hands and general body movement. This will be engaging for you audience. Click here for the importance of audience engagement.

Olivia Hunter – You have a strong voice. Think you need to find your own voice, the song choice felt a little forced for your vocal to feel comfortable singing. Click here for the importance of song choices. Always look to video your performances and look back and review with the view to improve as you have the ability and potential. We can see you in the west end!

Paris Brown – Good vocal performance! Bags of potential here! You are doing a lot of things right but be good to see you develop them to be even better. You are using the stage but commit even more, you are expressing the emotion of the song but look to develop further. Click here for how to sing with emotion. Be very exciting to see you in 18 months to 2 years if you listen, work hard and develop as much as you can!

Megan-Louise – You have a great image and showed us a confident performance. Good authentic sound, performing country music is going to be really important! Manchester Singing Contest – Feedback for Singer’s

Emily Nevitt – Your very confident and we like that! Super tone but your performance needs developing, look to use the stage. An example would be to take the mic off the stand and look to work the space you have around you. Click here for more for on stage performance tips as a singer. Look to use all your tools at your disposal expression, eye contact and body movement, more performance will help to develop this for you. This will be more engaging for you audience. Mahnoor Ahmed – Fantastic image and you were very confident! Song choice is massive and this felt at this stage of your development too big for you. Try choosing a song that you can bring your own twist to and make unique. Click here for the importance of song choices. Adalaide – We liked you image! You looked comfortable, so it made you stand out as an artist. Very awkward start, you need to perform from the moment your song starts. It’s great you are writing songs but it’s so important that you write killer songs to break down walls and create opportunities. Click here for tips on writing a song. Kira Hurst – Very confident performance! You have a great image. Song choice is massive and this felt quite an old song for you to sing! Click here for the importance of song choices. Amy Tugbenyo – You have a lovely vocal tone and a fantastic image. Song choice is massive and this felt at this stage of your development too big for you! Click here for the importance of song choices. Look to work hard on your vocals to develop your range, tuning which you struggled with your pitch and projection to be even better. Leah Silva – You have a strong projection and you gave us a confident performance. This was a massive song. Although you are hitting the high notes, it does take a lot out of you. Give the same attention to the lower notes in the verses, they didn’t sound pleasant on the ear, so would suggest this needs attention and consideration. Song choice is so important and this felt at this stage of your development a little too big for you! Not saying you can’t mail it in future as you have the ability and full potential! Tammy Wilde – Your vocals were great; we could see you connected with the sentiment in the song. Look into working the dynamics harder. Look to alter the tempo, projection and delivery to commit more to the chorus and on occasions, less is more leading into the chorus. Click here for more on vocal dynamics. Got a bit shaky towards the end so keep your focus to the end for a complete performance. Overall we loved your vocals.

Abi Kelly – Song was great! We love your original work. You have a cool and quirky tone! Look to develop your stage presence to bring the song alive even more. Tomisin Olurebi - Super tone and you have a good sense to play around with the notes to make the song your own! However, would like you to commit more to the chorus, vocally and with your body. Emily Wilson – Loved your vocal, super control and delivery! Just take care to not force the vocal and loose the control because you are reaching for that extra bit of projection. Manchester Singing Contest – 16-20’s Feedback

Hayley Warner – Nice vocals lots of power and potential! We love your unique image. We would like to see some originality as an artist at this age. Brad Spencer – You have a nice tone to your vocals. We would like to see you develop your vocal projection, as performers you didn’t engage with each other at all. Adding a glance or something to reach out to each other show us your as one. It was a slow burner and you needed to commit more from the off to make more of an impact. Bex – Good song choice for you as we felt your connection to the song emotionally, you expressed the song well! However, you were pitchy in places but this could be due to nerves. Look to work hard on your vocals to develop your range, tuning which you struggled with your pitch and projection to be even better, a good singing teacher will be able to assist you to be even better. Ella Shukhman – You have great confidence and you gave us a very theatrical performance! We liked your image. You used the stage well and performed but maybe consider that you may need to reign in the craziness, thin line between being artistic and a bit too different. Performance was affected with nerves. Annie Jackson-Elliott – Really cool look! Click here for the importance of creating a brand as a singer. You have lots of potential and a lovely voice. Most evident in the performance was a lack of vocal dynamics. Improving this will better your vocals greatly. Aaron Castro – You have a clear talent; you have an Ed Sheeran tone. You are a great guitar player.  You need to ensure you give us eye contact to connect us to you as an artist. Click here for more on why eye contact is important. You didn’t use the stage, which meant we didn’t see much of a performance. As a result, your engagement with the audience is lost. Samantha Etridge – You have a great range! You looked very self-conscious throughout your performance. This was apparent, rather than a concentration on your performance. Manchester Singing Contest – Feedback for Singer’s

Holly J Monroe – Your original and we loved your performance. It’s a great that your song writing, to write about a story that you connect to is great to see in your performance. Look to work on strengthening the hooks as it’s not catchy at certain points. Click here for more on writing a song. Look to write as much as you can so your song writing can develop as you have great potential! Performing more will help you develop with learning the dynamics of performance, this in turn will help develop the songs. 

Maddie Elvin – You have a strong projection and gave us a confident performance! Song choice is very important, it felt a little forced as you pushed your vocal too hard. Olivia Love – You have a good image and a nice smile! Lovely diction and a catchy original song. Use a great variety of vocal dynamics to drive through the hook of the song. Shauna Martina – You have a lovely tone! Confident performance and vocals. We loved your song choice - we liked that you brought your own unique spin to the song. Neda – You have an excellent voice, and we loved your song choice! Nice tone and projection to your vocal but look to use it is best potential, altering the tempo and projection would really drive the chorus. Siobhan Catherine – Good confident performance and use of stage! However, you were in the dark for the last first half of performance, you need to keep an eye on your whereabouts on stage. You were also pitchy at times, but maybe that was due to not being about to hear yourself. Before going on stage, warm up your vocals to avoid the issues with pitch. Hilla – What a powerful performance! Commit more to the performance! You are performing a little bit by numbers rather than naturally. Look to perform as much as you can to make your performance more natural and then connect us to your music even more. Georgia B – You performed very well! We loved your image and you gave us a confident performance. We would like to hear you adding something different to make you more original. Matty Bown - Lovely song choice! You have a great projection and clear tone. You started in the wrong key and you were a little pitchy throughout. Victoria K – You have a good vocal range! The song suits to be lazy on note but take care it doesn’t slip out of tune as came across a little pitchy at times rather than quirky. Aleya Mae – You have a lovely vocal and we loved your song choice. You have great projection! Try not to grab for that extra projection at the cost of control. Manchester Singing Contest – 21 and Over’s Feedback

Mr Life – You’re a good rapper and a great song! First impressions count for quite a bit and your demeanour is tight, loosen up and set the tone. Song is good and catchy lots of potential! Try not to copy other rappers, we could sense Eminem as an inspiration. Avoid the American tone and be more British. Well done, was good to see something unique! 

Rob Crampton – We loved your originality and you have a great projection! Song was nice and has lots of potential! Lily James – You have a great image and cool vibe. Probably too soon for you to performing to such an audience, look to perform around the local Open Mic circuit as you have lots of potential but you aren’t quite ready. Michelle Vecht – Good instrumental and you have a lovely voice. The main thing with song writing, is to write the song in a key to show off the best and sweet tone in your vocal, not sure this song provided that for you. Funkee Gibbons – Your very original and unique! This will put you apart from other artists. Nice tone and sentiment to the song! Would consider standing to perform as you are very restricted to the spot. If you stand you can still move your body and use that as a tool to express emotion. Charlene Hayman – You have a strong wide range and projection! With your song choice, you need everything going for you so get as close as you can to the microphone for the best projection you can produce. Click here for more on microphone techniques. Rhea Aimee – Start believing in yourself! Think like a pop star and dress like a pop star! Click here for some tips on finding an image as a musician. Tasmin Bethell – Liked you made the original your own! This is exactly how we like a creative cover, it shows us more of your own originality. You made it with a modern and alternative feel. Tara – Very cool and quirky vibe. You have a great tone and projection. Good start to the lyrics and southing vocal licks. Look to give us more eye contact to connect us to your song. Make sure you have a ‘searchable’ act name, as you have great potential. 

Dan Higgs – Nicely performed! You have a good range and projection. Not convinced this song has single potential. Where possible need to ensure your songs have loads of hooks to be catchy! Click here for tips on writing a song and writing that killer chorus. Make sure you warm up correctly, we could hear your voice getting thinner towards the end of the performance. Click here for some tips on singing warm-ups. Love the confidence in your singing ability. 

DC Cool – We loved the instrumental mix up. You have a strong range and excellent control. Always consider strongly what you are going to do different or better when doing a nailed on copy of the original of an iconic singer and song, matching Adele in a live performance is unrealistic. Although you did a great job, it’s nether original in that it’s different or better than the original. Hannah Thomas – Love your voice and such a committed performance! The crowd went wild for a very engaging song. Mike Warrillow – Nicely sung you have a good range! Not convinced this song has single potential, it felt a bit dated. Where possible need to ensure your songs have loads of hooks to be catchy! MANCHESTER SINGING CONTEST 

All singers and songwriters successful through the Manchester singing contest progressed onto the next stage of the competition at the Manchester Area Final Showcase which will be held at The Royal Northern of College of Music Manchester on Sunday 11th December!
