MUSIC CONTEST OPEN MIC UK 2014 GRAND FINAL 21 AND OVER FEEDBACK
The Open Mic UK music industry judges have given feedback to the 21 and Over Grand Finalists!
Music contest: The Open Mic UK Grand Final took place this weekend at The NEC and saw the best singers, singer-songwriters, rappers and vocalists across the country take to the stage in their efforts to win the title of ‘Open Mic UK Champion’.
The Grand Finalists performed in front of a music industry judging panel who have provided each of the acts with feedback on their performance to help them improve future performances.

MUSIC CONTEST INDUSRTY JUDGING PANEL
Judging the 21 and Over acts at the music contest were:
- A&R for Sony Music Layla Manoochehri.
- A&R for Universal Music James Morgan.
- Four time Ivor Novello award winner Mark Hill.
- Kerrang! Radio’s Alex Baker.
- Director and Producer of River Studios Gareth Henderson.
- Music Manager Andy Baker.
- Rock School’s Stuart Slater.
- Head of Future Music Chris Grayston.

Music contest – 21 and Over Feedback
Arya Sage – Good presence on stage and powerful projection just watch your timing. Good mash up worked really well, click here for more on mashup songs. Great image. Don’t be afraid to bring some more creativity to the stage.
Beau Halford – Great sentiment to your introduction. Your songs and lyrics have a real edge and originality. Distinctive voice. Great spirit. You’re like a hip hop version of Damon Albarn. The lyrics are good; love the concept of the song too.
Brett Huckfield and Marie Timmins – Liked the rain intro but where you got a real impact is in the change up half way through, which again you brought as always taking the audience with you. Impacting, creative and high energy. What a catchy tune!
Channy – Vocally this girl has gone to another level in the last year. Great that you also did your own interpretation of a cover and the mash up made it really original, click here for more on mashup songs. Good use of the stage; you just get better and better. You look beautiful.
Ciinderella B – Good groove created by the backing instruments filled some good space for just two instruments. Good connection between performers and she backs it up with some large pipes. Wasn’t as taken by the song as your Area Final performance, which was a little catchier. Great image. See you in the charts! Captivating!
David Rush – Such soul in the voice and great vocal control. Individual performance. There’s a lot of promise here, it was a sincere performance. Alex Baker from Kerrang Radio, "Don’t be nervous, you’ve got a ridiculously good voice."
Connor Moylan – Bit like Billy Bragg, liked the lyrics and sentiment. Catchy and a potential hit, recommend forwarding to Bragg’s record label. Northern, modern Billy Bragg. Layla Manoochehri from Sony Music, "I want this song on my mp3 player!"
Doremi Fly – Liked the backing dancers they gave some good visual background, click here for tips on when to use back up dancers. You should have confidence to do your original, liked the backing music, but the mix could have been cleaner. Great voice. Real intensification!
Deano – Good sentiment, but don’t be frightened to use your body/hands to express the emotion of the song even more. Great vocal. Loved the intensity. Like the image. Great tone and lot of sincerity.
Doug Heath – Great lyrics and well worked dynamics, perhaps it needs more of a defining hook line to really make it that hit song it could be. You really took the stage. Good song, captivating voice!
H Boss – Impressive start and the routine was really on point. Lead really worked with the routine rather than being detached. Unfortunately how impressive H Boss is with his moves, vocally he is below par for the general standard of the final. The material doesn’t work too well, needs more of a hook, click here for tips on song chorus.
Faye Bagley – Love Faye and you have such personality on stage. Would love to hear an evening of your songs, this is such a great positive song. Grow in confidence and perform more! You make it look so easy.

Jason Butler – Good vocals, but it needed to be backed up with some originality click here for tips on performing a creative cover. The backing track was distracting from your performance. Great voice! What a voice!
Graham Lindley – A lot going on in the background made it sound very crowded and swamped your guitar playing really, click here for tips on backing music. Really enjoyed your performance. Track was a little messy and didn’t allow your vocal to come through.
Jordan Adams – Always very animated in your expression and surely an act that should be in the west end. Being critical you could use the stage more. Effortless vocal though and you suited the style. Add in some vibrato to be a superstar!
L Kassidy – Songs just flow really well and love the backing. What a tune! You must be an Artful Dodger fan?! Good performance. You’ve come along loads since the Regional Finals in Camden! Loving the garage vibes, we were fully shoulder bopping.
Iain Scott – Nice story in the song, perhaps would have benefitted from a more defining lyrical hook line. Love the dynamics and drama, what a voice! Can hear this on a film, would like to hear more. Loved the braces too. So much potential!
Lara Loux – Like the use of props and again the bond theme to your songs comes out. Perhaps you should make that your thing “The Bond girl.” Captured the mood of the song well. Good performance, loved the dress!
Nadia Rae – Liked the interpretation of the cover, but it was fundamentally the same song. You sang the song with such conviction and power. Amazing voice! Stay clear of Beyoncé songs though, find your own identity!
Operali – You have a great voice, you just need to bring more expression and performance. Don’t be frightened to use those hands and be more animated. Really liked the song choice, what a voice! Such a polished delivery.
Rytesize – At last you got a female vocalist and she did a decent job, you want to keep with this line up. Now bring on your own songs. Great performance. Could you be the new N-Dubz? Loved the contrast in the song.
Sean Parker – Nice guitar work. Good vocal delivery. Highly musical, individual tones. Good tune, such a catchy chorus!
Riez – Just wonder whether this song was written in the best key for your vocal, perhaps work on writing songs that are in the best range for the sweeter tone in your vocal. Watch your pitching. Good emotional content. Keep up the songwriting.
Unit 1 – Fantastic! Elements of the track work really well, others need re-working. Certainly made an impression when you hit the stage and it was a well thought through image. Great energy and performance! Good rapping too.
The Shures – Lovely to hear and they blend so well as a group with well executed harmonies. Great commercial potential. Superb vocals. Nice to have a bit of Bon Jovi. Layla Manoochehri from Sony Music, "Pitch perfect! Great harmonies, great band."
