Open Mic UK Grand Finalists received music industry feedback
Music Industry Feedback: The Open Mic UK Grand Final took place this weekend at The NEC in Birmingham and saw the best singers, singer-songwriters, rappers and vocalists across the country take to the stage in their efforts to win the title of ‘Open Mic UK Champion’.

The professional judges giving music industry feedback at the Grand Final Music Competition were:

Aiyana – You look like a popstar on stage! Great expression which demonstrated a good connection to the song. The key is to keep your audience engaged. Click here for tips on audience engagement. Beth Swan – Lovely song, it was very haunting! A very strong vocal performance and confident delivery. Throw yourself into the performance and show us your passion! Click here for vocal exercises for singers – this will help strengthen your vocals. Think about showing the lighter emotions in the song, as well as the pain. Brook – You have a super tone to your vocals. You’re a good-looking guy which will serve you well in this industry! Guitar work was tidy but look at giving us more dynamics. Try to breath in the middle of phrases, click here for tips on breath control exercises – this will help with your breathing technique. If you make these improvements, you will have a bright future as a singer.
Cheska Ruiz – You have such a great volume for someone so small! Your potential in a few years is frightening! You are going to be amazing. You have great performance techniques and you’re very confident. Keep developing to extend your ability to really push those notes even higher. Chloe Paige – It’s so good that you are writing about songs that your peers will be able to relate to. You have a great song writing ability! Click here for tips on writing lyrics. The key is for you to keep writing to strengthen your writing potential. You have a great career ahead of you.
Ciara Parker – You saved your best for the final! Your expression and performance has vastly improved! Try to let loose a little more and show us your passion. Coco – You have a lovely voice and you looked fantastic on stage. Start to write your own songs to show us your originality as an artist. Click here for tips on writing lyrics. Dami – You have a sharp distinct soulful vocal. We could hear a slight rasp in your vocal, which could indicate that you haven’t warmed up enough before your performance. Eva Rose – The song is cute and original. Loved your image, the theme on your dress was great. Click here for tips on singers image. Georgia Bunnell – You have a fantastic vocal. Your song choice felt a little safe, you have the ability to push yourself greatly. Isobel Wannell – You wore a lovely dress that made you stand out! Click here for tips on singers image. You worked the stage well, which meant the audience could connect to your performance. You have great potential Isobel, keep working hard.
Jenna – A wonderful and powerful emotional song that showed us your sensitivity as an artist. You connected well to the song and kept the engagement with the audience. Jeremiah – We can’t wait to hear you find your own sound as you have a super voice and you work the stage so well. When performing look to give your attention direct to your audience, rather than the wings. Sing it directly to your audience and make eye contact with them. This will be more engaging for them. Khuwayne – You have a lovely rich vocal. See if you can give us a greater range, click here for tips on how to improve your vocal range. You communicated your song well, we could feel the soul. Try to up your passion also, we want to see that you really want this!
Lashayah – You have improved so much throughout this competition. You seemed confident but a little unsure at times. Make sure you keep practising so you are confident when you step on stage. Click here for tips on how to calm nerves. The song choice showed off your voice, but it felt a little dated and it didn’t show much of your originality. Leni – You’re extremely confident! Great to see you doing something different with the dancers, although it would be good to see you get more involved with the performance as you seemed a little distant from the dancers. Keep working on your vocals. Loved the disco feel to the song, it was refreshing. The breakdown was fun but perhaps should’ve come in a little earlier.
Liam Price – Such a confident performer and you have a lovely charm. Mackenzie – Incredible just how good you have gotten in a year. The song is very good and catchy, shows off the best parts of your vocal. Keep having another 12 months like the last and it’ll be amazing to see what’s possible with you! This is a good potential summer anthem.
Millie-Mae – You set the tone to the performance and portrayed the emotion you felt so well. To write from the heart and portray that is exceptional. Good use of the stage and very confident. The song really showed off your higher range.
Mirin & Lucy – You harmonise so well, which is so important as a duo, click here for more on vocal groups. Consider going off in tangents driving the performance for more depth. Molly Scott – What a booming vocal! Use your body and natural vocal control to give even more impact to your performance. Also playing with your tempo and power to give us even more impact. Nayla - A lazy start which made you lose the initial important but what a tone and projection once you got into your stride! You need to ensure you work on all areas to make sure you shine like a star. A really heartfelt performance, which is great to see, click here for more tips on how to sing with emotion.
Nicole Sherwood – The song has a lot of potential but perhaps needed a focus on creating an initial impact and worked around a stronger hook, click here for more on writing that killer song chorus. The more you write the more likely it is you will write that breakthrough song. Try and put in more stage presence, click here for more on stage performance tips.
Olivia Crawford – You have a glint in your eye to show us you believed in the message in your song. Your vocal backs up the solid song. Good stage presence and communication of the song. Really well deserved place in the show!
Renee B – Another act who has impressed increasingly each time you get up on stage. The focus now is the start developing and having the confidence to perform your own song. Your guitar playing will always give you an authentic feel as an artist. Rhianna Grace – Song has a good theme and the lyrics relate really well, just look to work the dynamics and/or strengthen the hook, click here for more on writing that killer song chorus. Also, click here for more on adding singing dynamics to your performance. The performance got stronger as you went on, at first is felt like you weren’t very confident playing the keyboard.
Rio-Leanna – Performance and vocally you have bags of ability but you need to bring more originality. Click here for more on performing a creative cover. Exciting to release your full potential. Need to build up strength in your head voice. Good performance techniques.
Roddy Ryan – There is a star in there, just need to perform as much as you can so you come across more natural and less robotic. Also, look to work on getting as close to that microphone as possible, click here for more on tips on microphone techniques. Be careful of pitch! Well done for working past the microphone slipping!
Roxy – Look to build on some strong piano skills to develop more expression and conveying the emotion in the song. Click here for more on how to sing with emotion. Use more of the sustain pedal. Try not to let your nerves get to you, once you’re more confident playing and singing in sync which confidence will come more naturally.
Saskia – Love your image, which is so important. Song wise you needed to punch out the hook/chorus more, perhaps by altering your tempo and delivery. Yasmin – Liked that you made the song your own but still difficult to get away from the American rock feel. You committed well and there’s no reason why you wouldn’t be a great story teller, please start writing and then have the confidence to perform your own songs, click here for tips on writing lyrics.

Aleya Mae – You have an amazing vocal and you express the emotions of the song so well, make sure you don’t overcook it and over play the emotions. Also, embrace the positive and warmth of the emotion in the song, and not just the pain. Look to also work the dynamics to keep the interest going throughout. Alia Lara – The keyboard gives it a real live feel but be conscious, we want to hear you as an artist, click here for more on performing a creative cover. Super keywork to create a moody, sultry feel. Impressive vocals to give the audience a show! Keep growing and developing, don’t be afraid to experiment.
Amy Lonergan – Impressive vocals, look to own that stage more with more presence, click here for more on stage performance tips. Also, click here for more on performing a creative cover. Powerful voice!
Arkuen – Most original artist of the day! Sentiment of the song will resonate with a lot of people. Visually was a little dull until you performed in the breakdown. Work on image. Your song has a great abstract concept. You gave an intruging performance, you will find an audience for you!
Benjamin – Bags of personality and you performed well. Backing track and beat sounded very weak and needed more punch, click here for the importance of a good backing music. Cool image and good moves. The performance needs more performance, with a few more rehearsals you should be able to nail the performance factor.
Cerys Hanson – Beautifully sun but a very common cover choice and you needed to add your own spin, click here for more on performing a creative cover. Performance wise look to use the stage more, click here for more on tips on stage performance tips. Work more on depth from your vocal delivery. The mark-up was really good, just really believe.
Christina Laurie – Electric pad gave a real, original feel and lovely connection between performers to make everybody feel relaxed. Good change up but the original could have been a bit catchier, click here for more on writing that killer song chorus. Your image as a singer needs to be stronger for you to stand out even more.
Ky Music – Need to be very careful using the loop pedal to not disengage the audience, it can sometimes take a long time to build and by which time you lose the audience a little. Click here for more on guitar loop pedal performance. Works more on your vocal delivery and projecting vocals. Your performance has a really good vibe to it.
Darshae – You aren’t making the most of what you’ve got, you could use your body, arms and stage to greater effect. Click here for more on stage performance tips and the importance of performance. Song has potential, just needs more punch. Your vocal needs strengthening on the higher notes.
Em Lawrence – You were very smile and nice, you introduced yourself but your lips hardly moved, so just look at how you express yourself. Your posture could be developed along with your stage presence. Vocally, make sure you don’t force the vocals and lose control. Make sure you practise enough with your guitarist so that the performance is seamless.
Honor – Lovely song but a song choice that is very common and hard to put your stamp on it, click here for more on performing a creative cover. Better still, start Songwriting to show your originality. Nice, girl next door image, just need to find something unique to do.
Lewis Markson – Moody and sultry song choice perhaps needed a change up. Strong lyrics but perhaps needed more punch in the chorus. Click here for more on guitar dynamics. Marrianne – Super control on your vocals and strong passion and commitment. Look to commit more to the performance and use of the stage, click here for more on stage performance tips. Very good/strong vocals. Image not too strong or as dramatic as the song implies, click here for more on singers image.
Matt Bankhurst – Need to be aware of where and when not to use the loop pedal, not convinced it added a lot to the performance. Just you and the guitar driving through the chorus should be sufficient as the song is a good one. Look to work the dynamics a little more to both work the hook harder and keep the interest going throughout. Click here for when a musician should ask for audience participation.
Niamh Murphy – Good mash up with the songs blending well, click here for more on performign song mashups. You have a haunting vocal and you bought the performance to a great climax, good use of dynamics.
Olivia Love – You have a sweet vocal but the ukulele is very thin and the songs would suit the guitar backing them to be potentially a lot stronger. Like the folk style and the image which suited it.
Owen Holt – Love this song, very catchy. Would have been even cooler if you rewrote the vital lyrics too. Good rap breakdown but perhaps punchier and less would have worked better. You need to find something more unique to help you stand out, click here for tips on singers image.
Queenie - Showed great personality to introduce yourself and your song. You also write good stories into the song. Just need to potentially have a stronger first line on the chrous. As an artist you have have bags of potential. You've got an interesting image. Hope you had a good birthday!
Phoebe Rose – Wow, great outfit- so striking! Click here for the importance of singers image. Like you come to the front of the stage to connect even more to your audience. Song has lots of potential, just need to punch through that hook early on. Your confidence shines through in your performance and vocal delivery.
Rebekah Birch – Good expression and a smiley face is always engaging. Look to work the stage more as you were very static, click here for more on stage performance tips. Also, would like to see you being more original, click here for performing a creative cover. Reminds me a bit of Jessie J! Good vocal depth and engagement with your eye contact.
Reece McConnell - A sharp haircut! Liked that you made the song your own, click here for the importance of performing a creative cover. You have a distinct vocal and it would be good to get you writing and confident enough to perform your own song. Your image is good.
Remi Bleu – Confident performer and you looked relaxed like you belonged on stage. Guitar could have sounded sharper, took he guitarist a while to get into the performance. Sam Clines – Good melodic start to give a relaxing vibe. Good sound and good melody. Use your eyes to reach out to your audience, click here for the importance of eye contact. You’ve got a Ben Howard/James Bay feeling to you. Nice vibe to the performance and it was a confident performance. Well done. You've really improved throughout the competition.
Shanaya – You’re relying too much on your powerful voice, use your eyes to reach out to your audience, click here for more on the importance of eye contact. Also, look to portray more passion in your body language and look to dominate the stage. Great voice, work on your breathing techniques to get your vocal stronger. Built it up brilliantly!
Sifa – Super power in your vocal but the song choice is very common and a little dated. Watch your vocal control and timing, click here for the importance of song choices. You need to work on your breathing as you’ve got great potential. Find a unique image, a creative element to add to the minimal look will only aid your performance.
Sofi Robinson – Liked that you made the cover song your own, although it’s a very popular song choice sometimes it was a case of change for change’s sake, click here for more on performing a creative cover. Super vocal and stage presence. You’ve got something about you that makes us think of ABBA?
Zara Jagroo – A little nervy at the start, just slow a little and get your composure. Look to develop your expression to convey the emotion in your face. Alex Keirl – Glitzy jacket to stand out, click here for more on the importance of singers image. An intense expression that you might want to simmer at times. Super vocal and exceptional range. Very strong falsetto, but make sure you have enough breath. Good sport for getting through the technical issues, true professional!
Cadenza – Great to see you saving your best for the Grand Final. Image synchronised and harmonies worked well. Would like to see more ranging harmonies to give even more contrast. Try and have more stage presence, some vocals were a little shaky.
Charlotte Beth – You have a lovely vocal which would have been better if you selected a more challenging song. It’s a very popular cover and it would have been better if you had made it your own. Dan O’Connor – Liked the song, try, and reach out more with your eyes to connect your audience to your performance. Look to open up that emotion, commit to portray the emotion in the song. Slight timing issue at the start. Key may have been a bit too low, not your strongest performance today.
DC Cool – Good keywork but the sound on the backing was very dated and a little ‘Phoenix Nights’ like. Look to change the music to be a little cooler as the song has potential. Confident performance, had a good 80’s feel. Would have liked to have seen more use of the stage. Vocal breaks towards the ned.
Elliot Platt – Nice sharp vocal, and great energy. Work the dynamics and /or change the arrangement slightly to focus on the hook of the song more. Click here for more on writing that killer song chorus. Very confident and the song really showed off your vocal range. Nice performance today Elliot!
Emotive Concept – Your improvement in the competition has been incredible. Maybe going forward lose the accent. Backing musicians give it such a live and vibrant feel. Song is catchy maybe just ned to clean up the chorus so less shouty. Click here for when to ask for audience participation. Lots of energy. Very good communication of the song and it was a catchy tune.
Fay Bromley – Super tone and control. Obviously doing a west end show it lacks originality. Just need to consider where you think your calling lies, west end singing as an actor or as an original singer. You’re always very confident with stage presence!
Hannah Thomas – You have such a booming vocal and an engaging song to create an awesome combination. Such a committed performance. Good stage presence and good vocal.
Harry Middleton – It’s a very sensitive song choice which didn’t totally suit your husky vocal. Look to use your eyes more to connect to us as an audience and even more. Jayvox – A little awkward start looking nervous remember to perform as soon as you hit the stage. Good song choice for a creative cover, click here for more on performing a creative cover. Would look to add more dynamics, click here for tips on adding singing dynamics. Your breath control needs a little work, but you have a powerful vocal and your use of stage was strong.
Jayne Snow – Solid and punchy backing from both instruments. Your song is catchy and engaging. As performers just try and reach out to each other with a glance or a smile. Good musicality, rhythm, and dynamics to build to a climax. Very powerful vocal and good use of the stage.
Jonny Olley – Moody vibe created on the loop and straight into engaging the audience just how to use the loop pedal. Great job! Click here for more on guitar loop pedal performance. You’ve got an Ed Sheeran vibe. Good communication skills. Fantastic guitar skills, really compliment your vocals. Really enjoyed your performance today.
Josh Tom – Interesting song to cover to give an unexpected creative cover. Would have been even better if ou let it breathe in place, click here for more on bringing singing dynamics to the performance. Be careful of your facial expressions. Timing was a bit messy.
Komposa, Mic D & Jack C – A different line up, musically great. Visually you could tidy it up to be a bit more sleeker. Good dynamics to build to a climatic conclusion. Great connection between all musicians. Try and think about your image more, click here for tips on singers image. Energetic feel and a great song.
Lewis Shepperd – You have a great smile to engage the audience. Song is very catchy, perhaps loops in a similar fashion too soon. Built the track up well on loop pedal after engaging the audience to start with, just take care to build it up quickly to keep us all engaged. Confidence performance. The beatboxing was a nice addition to the performance.
Marissa – Song is really engaging, catchy and has lots of potential. Visually, dancers or performers behind would have really added to the party vibe. Such an uplifting song choice for a confident performance with a lot of stage presence.
Mimi – Needed more impact at the start of the song. Look up and engage with your audience., you just looked down throughout the performance. Click here for the importance of eye contact.
Natalie May – A very sharp look, click here for the importance of singers image. Song sounded good but don’t forget to really concentrate on driving that hook, click here for the importance of that killer song chorus. Try to use more of your chest voice.
Ripzaw – Song is good, would be good to consider trying to make the accent and delivery a bit more original. You worked the stage well with a committed performance. Very confident performance, lots of character. You looked like you were really enjoying it, and that came across well with the audience.
Tara Lou – You have a soft and tender vocal. Remember to look up and engage the audience. The song is a good one, but give more focus to the chorus, click here for more on writing a song chorus. Take care when playing! You’ve got a really good image.
Tata – Need to take care with your pitch because when you are on point it sounds great. Song choice was a little common and dated, click here for more on song choices. Lots of emotion and communication of the song.
Therese Carroll – Nicely done and you have a lovely range, consider using the range more dynamically along with the delivery, click here for more on singing dynamics. Lots of stage presence. Loved the arrangement of the song.
