Singers were given feedback at the Newscastle Regional Final Showcase

NEWCASTLE SINGING CONTEST   

Newcastle Singing Contest: Music industry judges gave singers feedback at the Newcastle singing contest at The Tyne Theatre & Opera House in Newcastle this weekend. The Newcastle singing contest gave singers and songwriters the opportunity to gain a place in the Area Finals of Open Mic UK.

Newcastle Singing Contest – Open Mic UK 2016

The music industry judges at the Newcastle singing contest included:

  • Darran Barker, Head Judge, DB Music Management
  • Andy Baker, Founder of Resound Media, home of Sound Consultancy and Rocket Fuel. He's responsible for getting many new artists on national radio and has landed unsigned acts on tours with Little Mix, Leona Lewis and Lionel Richie
  • Julie Miles, Vocal Ovation
  • Rob Davies, NE1 Radio presenter
  • Helena Davison Webber, Vocal Tutor
  • Channy Thompson, Singer/songwriter

Newcastle Singing Contest - Under 16’s Feedback

Brook Miller – There's no messing around with you Brook! Straight in there with confidence and style. A relaxed and controlled performance. You’re a pleasure to watch and you have a voice like velvet. You made the song your own, keep up with this style of performing. Click here for performing a creative cover for singers. Well done. 

Josh Dronfield – A brave and confident performance. You have a great stage presence. It was a little pitchy in places - keep exercising and training those vocal muscles - you’re certainly on the right track. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help exercise your vocals. 

Alisha Laidler – Big song! Big effort and you did it justice! Very nice controlled vocals, would be great if you could learn to belt out the high notes rather than falsetto. Brooke Burke – Fantastic performance, well done. What an amazing depth of tone for such a young singer. Work on more effective breath control exercises with a singing teacher. Sally Minnett – Lovely tone. Keep exercising and strengthening your voice as we can hear a good vocal there. We feel like you’re holding back slightly – bring more energy to your performance. Kenza – You have tonnes of individuality and you are very memorable. Tricky song but you handled it well. Try to relax and have more fun on stage! Elisha Lang – Fantastic delivery of the song. Learn to pull the mic away from your mouth a touch on the big notes. Click here for tips on microphone techniques. Train hard and find out who you are as an artist and you will have a successful career. Big things await – a good all round performance! 

Abi Westerman – Brilliant vocal delivery! Such a haunting tone and a striking image. You have great vocal character in your voice. Hold on to this and develop it as you have a unique asset. Harriet Rose – Your vocal delivery was good. Haunting and captivating performance. This was a good song choice. Which such an emotional song we would like to see more expression in your face. Scarlett Ellis – Really entertaining performance, well done. Lots of expression, intonation and character. Learn more on mic technique! Olivia Crawford – You already come across as a true artist. Extremely impressed in every aspect! You have a very powerful stage presence. Very quirky and individual mashup. Click here for tips on song mashups. Keep focused on what you’re doing, you’re going to be a future star.

Yazmine Badoo – There’s some real flavour and character coming through your vocals. It was very well delivered but we need to find a bit more of that special character and individuality coming through – something that will make you different from everyone else. Sophie G – Lovely song choice. Your vocal tone is to die for! Real potential to be a nice performer. You need more confidence and experience. Click here for tips on building stage confidence for singers. Working on your confidence will be massively beneficial to you – you could be amazing!

Sasha and David – Massively entertaining performance! This makes you guys an exciting prospect! Try not to forget the fundamentals of vocal training, as the vocals were quite low for Sasha at times. Ella Brown – You put in a great effort and showed confidence. You used the stage well and engaged well. Click here for tips on audience engagement. Could never get tired of watching you perform! Your very marketable in today’s industry. 

Rebecca Atkinson – Good thought through performance. You delivered with confidence and sensitivity. Even though we could see your nerves, we could see your enjoyment – looked like you had fun! Tom Mouse Smith – Very well crafted song and a good confident delivery. Fab melody and catch to it. Click here for tips on writing a song. You’re extremely talented. You have skills beyond your years. Try to smile more on stage!

Newcastle Singing Contest - Singing Feedback

Amelia – Wow! A very impressive vocal performance. The next level would be to think about conveying the subtleties of the emotion in the song. Click here for tips on being able to sing with emotion. COURTZ – Fantastic performance. You’ve clearly grownup a music listening family and been bought up listening to classics. Try not to over-perform. Sometimes less is more. Overdoing it sometimes causes a loss of control on pitch. Be sure to get this right before you think about your performance skills. Rebekah Grace – Great potential. Loved the song choice! Click here for the importance of song choices. Although the dancer performed stunningly, it was slightly distracting from your performance. You showed real and natural emotion in your performance – well done.

Molly Teasdale – You have a nice tone. Your vocals felt slightly pushed and forced. Be sure to work on your vocal ability. Jenna Cole – You have a nice soulful voice somewhere deep down. Make sure you perform from the moment you step on the stage, rather than adjusting your clothes. Above the Water – You guys make a nice package that is certainly ready to go to the next level. You have plenty of charisma. Nice version of the song. Click here for tips on song mashups. Be sure to keep it controlled and individual. Maybe the set up would be better in either a full group or solo with a guitar.

Sapphire – A nice cover of a timeless classic. Beautiful, strong, controlled and a very emotive performance. You have a nice voice. Work on making your vocals more powerful. Emily Sutton – Fantastic vocals. You looked uncomfortable to start with – you were closed with your arms. Try to be confident and appear more relaxed! This will massively benefit your performance. Sophie Forrest – Nice acoustic track. Nice sounding, sensitive delivery of a lovely original song. Your vocals felt slightly monotonal. Michael T Ogilvie – Great performance. You have a good stage presence, and your sung very well. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. You have a lovely deep tone to your voice. Look to build on these strengths as you can go far! Well done. 

Sophie Flanagan – Nice original track. You have a very soft tone. Beautifully captivating performance and song. Click here for tips on writing a song. Be sure to stick with this, you have the potential to go very far.

Victor Ray – You have a very strong boyband voice. The strong aspects of your performance were very strong! Lovely vocal tone and delivery. Try to work on your delivery at the extremes in your range. Daniella Clark – Loved the cool look! You look the part. Your song choice wasn’t right. You track had the melody playing throughout, so it was distracting from your vocals. Honor – Great version of the song - strong vocals and a great presence on stage. Very captivating from start to finish. We felt every word. You could step up your image slightly to create more edge and drama. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician.

The Hurst Sisters – Two good singers! You put a lot of thought into your act. It would be nice to see some more interaction between you both. Whether that’s a glance over at each other now and again, or smiling at each other. Click here for tips on singing in a group. This will be more engaging to your audience. 

Shanaya – Soulful voice. It was very powerful and strong. You have a great stage presence to match! Newcastle Singing Contest – 21 and Over’s Feedback

Leah – You have a very mature voice and you looked the part! You are a very good performer; you gave us a great presentation and projection. Adelija – Lovely voice. The song was very moody, we loved the theatrical flavour and passion. You are very talented, quirky and very individual – almost unpredictable! David English – Very professional appearance – you looked the part. You had loaded of charisma, and you worked the stage well. Darren Wilson – One of the best original songs of the day. Liked your style and the occasional gravel tone too. You have a lot of passion and feistiness on stage. Alfi – Enjoyed the performance. We would like you to try a song that’s less obvious. Choose a song that you can bring own spin to and make your own. Naomi Kemp – You perform with real passion, we believed every word. You sung well, but you were nervous and it showed. Try to minimise this as much as possible as its hindering your performance. Loved the catch of the original – there was a nice melody but it could have been more creative.

Eleanor Hemingway – You’re so relaxed and confident – your personality came through. Nice live performance and stage presence. We loved your version of a classic. Greg Genre – Very entertaining! Click here for stage performance tips for singers. There wasn’t much singing involved, try to incorporate just a chorus of singing to break up the rapping. This would bring a greater dynamic range to your performance. 

Le Destra – Lovely soft/deep voice, you have some style too! A very soulful and sassy performance. It was nice to see you smile while performing on stage. NEWCASTLE SINGING CONTEST 

All singers and songwriters successful through the Newcastle singing contest progressed onto the next stage of the competition at the North East England Area Final Showcase which will be held at Dewsbury Town Hall Dewsbury on Saturday 19th November.
