NORTH EAST ENGLAND MUSIC COMPETITION
North East England Music Competition feedback for the Open Mic UK North East England 21 and Over Area Finals!
North East England music competition: National music competition Open Mic UK held its Area Finals at Dewsbury Town Hall this weekend and saw North East England’s best singers, songwriters and solo artists take to the stage in their bids to impress a music industry judging panel and capacity crowd.
The Area Finals were judged by music industry specialists who have provided music competition feedback for each of the acts that performed. The people the North East England music contest area finalists wanted to impress were Kate Holland from Pro Voice Studios, Asher Halle from Green Pepper Junction Records and a previous Brit panel judge, Sue Donkin from Entertainment News, X-Factor star Geoff Mull and Head of Future Music, Chris Grayston.
North East England’s Area Finals were rounded off by our guest act, X Factor star, Geoff Mull.

Kiel Wilkinson – Cool festival look going on, but watch your mic control as losing a little on projection, click here for more on mic control. Would have had a better sound if sound checked but couldn’t be helped so well done in the circumstances. Liked how the song started, but half way through lost it a bit.
PJ Francis – Nice tone just take care with the control, click here for tips on making a cover creative. Loved your presence and you looked great. Try and chill more and enjoy it.
Katy Ellen – Strong vocal but it needs more control. Song choice wise, it’s such an iconic song to select and also difficult to put your own spin on it! Click here for tips on making a cover creative. You performed but don’t be frightened to commit even more to the performance, for more ideas and tips on stage performance click here.
Nok2la – Song choice especially with a Jennifer Hudson number is always not to be taken lightly as it’s going to be difficult to get it anywhere as good as the original and also we would also have heard the song a number of times, click here for the importance of song choice. Having said that, you have good vocals and sang the song well especially towards the end. You need to pick songs that can show you off individually.
Jon Sibley – Nice song, try and convey that song across to us as best as you can by using your eyes and expression, click here for more information on facial expression. You have the ability just use all the tools at your disposal to give us all the emotion of the song.
Riez – Great vocal control to capture the audience. Song choice and performance lacked dynamic as it stayed very much on one level when it needed a change up to impress even more, click here for tips on vocal dynamics.
Bobby Regan - Need to re-work the image, you need to look like a pop star rather than someone who is ready to pop to bed. Take care with your diction as hard to work out what your lyrics are, click here for tips on vocal diction. Perhaps look to work with a duo so you can feed off each off and give more vocal dynamic.
Joanne Hackney – You have a good voice and awesome presence. Liked the guitar backing, which gave it a live feel. You worked the emotion well in the face. You could have taking the mic off the stand and connected to the audience even more, click here for advice on engaging the audience. Watch your vocal trills as you were slightly off at times.
Melonie – You have a really strong vocal and won the crowd over from the first line. Use that stage more, click here for some tips on stage performance. Try and enjoy it even more, could tell there were some nerves.
Edwin D – You have a lovely tone to your vocal and when you got going sounded great, but you need to remember all the lines as there was an awkward faltering start, click here for tips on making a cover creative. You have a great image.
North East England Music Competition – Feedback
Joe Roscoe – Beautiful voice and tone. You needed a little more performance and originality, you sung and played well but there was nothing distinctive, so work on image, click here for importance of image. Start performing your own songs, click here for some tips on songwriting.
Arya Sage – Good connection to the song and emotion conveyed. You have great stage presence it just lacked originality in not making it your own, click here for tips on making a cover your own. You have a great look.
Mathew Long – Wow! You were born in the wrong era. What lovely tone and vocal you have. You needed more of a performance, though and a well worked routine, it lacked originality, click here for tips on making a cover your own.
LeoKai – Very impressive start instrumentally which you built and then oddly, after building it so well just dropped it to sing acapella. Song has potential, full backing sound for just two instruments and it was an enjoyable performance, click here for more advice on audience participation. Watch your mic control as you were causing your vocal to be very inconsistent, click here for more on mic control.
Kalli Ashton – You have a great image. Watch other artists perform on Youtube and see how they express emotional songs and look at what you are doing, perhaps look back at the footage; you need to learn how to convey the emotion, click here for tips on singing with emotion.
Eastwood – You have a real meaningful voice but, you should have had confidence in doing your own song as it was a bit messy going from song to song which were bolted on rather than a mash up, click here for more on mash up’s.
Sam Barston – It’s a lovely song to pick to sing and you have a lovely tone but you needed to take us somewhere we haven’t been before with the song. You didn’t help yourself by having the mic too far from your mouth which would have affected your projection and quality of your vocal, click here for more on mic control, also click here for tips on making a creative cover.
Graham Lindley – very strong performance. Liked you made the song your own with a folky edge. Could have changed it up a little more before the end as it looped a bit too much previous to that, click here for more information on vocal dynamics. Great performance though.
Channy - You’re a beautiful girl. This is a massive song to sing, but vocally that’s as good as we've heard you! You need to perform more though, click here for more on stage performance.
