Under 16's Feedback – North East Music Contest
Cole LC - Always difficult to open a big show! Composed vocally, nice story telling style. Looked a little tentative, needed more of you to come through. Work on image and mic technique too. Click here for tips on microphone technique and finding an image as a musician. I thought you were holding back a little, but nailed the delivery! Promise here bit on the day, split the judges.
Olivia McAllister - You took command of the stage and definitely seemed to enjoy the moment! Watch low range balance and support, and make sure melisma does not lose exactness of pitch. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Watch breathing technique too. Click here for breath control exercises. Expressive though, interesting, and liked the image. One to watch….
Brooke Burke - What a voice – you are a star! You settled into this, and delivered with style and conviction. Insane you looked so comfortable too! Click here for tips on building stage confidence for singers. It’s fair to say everyone enjoyed this and you scored very highly across all the judges. Keep up with the training and gaining experience, but highly communicative, very surprising delivery, and you are capable of performing at a high level. Excellent Brooke :)
Evie Burt - Full of emotion and technically almost always comfortable - a bit pitchy today. Plenty of contrasts, dynamic shape and personalisation. A stronger act, lovely vocal tone. Will need to find a commercial edge to go to the next level but deserving of your place in the area final. Would like to see again when you found a greater stylistic identity. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician.
Rosie Allenby - Contemporary Uke – you've got something right there Rosie! This delivery had something too! You held the stage well, even with fairly sparse material. A good example of ‘less is more’. Nice storytelling. Watch image, and room for greater engagement still further, but very good. Click here for tips on audience engagement. Nailed it!
Harry W - Great male vocal! Delivered with conviction and a sense of effortlessness. Nice contrast of image versus style - wasn't expecting that and it worked for you. This said, image could be more polished – take some advice here. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. You have the makings of a talented performer. Hard to fault really, and unlucky not to go through into final. Very close on the day.
Katie A - Well prepared and presented, good use of stage. Clearly able, with much more potential to discover, looked a little hesitant, but maintained your determination to cover the stage and convey the track. Click here for tips on building stage confidence for singers. Definitely deserved your place in the area final and hope you enjoyed the experience. Believe in yourself Katie - One to watch!
Scarlett E - Great image, you have the look of a comfortable performer and good communication of the song. Watch intonation and pitching accuracy. Some technical security on display, but inevitable off-key pockets detracted from what could be a promising act. Keep up the training and gaining experience. Many positive elements, but technical enhancement needed! Click here for tips on finding the right singing teacher for you.
Taiya-Mae - Wow! Professional combination of vocal security, articulation, conveyance of mood, delivery style, image, with a healthy sprinkling of individuality and sizeable star quality! Come the day you will need to ask yourself a question as to how you will continue without your (excellent) partner-in-keys, but if sensitively handled, it would be interesting to see how far you could go. Click here for tips on building stage confidence for singers. Fantastic!
Ellie C - Great attention to image, loved the vocal. Clearly prepared and strong technically, you nailed the performance, but something did not quite work as a package. Individual components scored highly but couldn’t t quite warm to the delivery overall…! I think delivery style was a touch too serious? Try and lighten the mood, and sing through a smile :) (Split the judges). Click here for tips on singing with facial expressions.
Elisa N - Wonderful attention to image! Couldn't help but see elements of Bowie in a strange sort of way, which was well received, and worked for you. Great song too. Not sure of the connection of image and track/style, but both were strong independently. Click here for tips on act image and synchronisation. You gave this everything and a stronger act in today’s show. You must keep up your creative and technically successfully work. Well done.
Mia Carney - Clear identifiable style, confident, a performer here. Image is ‘fine’ but needs further work to go the next level. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Would be interested to see wider range / repertoire. Well done in all events for performing with an injury, which did not distract, if anything added to the performance! Watch pitch accuracy in low range… Click here for tips on vocal dynamics.
Girl Talk - You clearly have an experience at a young age, and this comes through in conviction and communication. Aim for even tighter unison in choreography and greater accuracy in harmony, but as your established CV indicates, much quality and also promise moving forward. Click here for tips for music duos and groups. Don't become complacent, still work to do, but very good. Good luck in the final.
Jessie D - Captured the audience with command and did well to successfully alter mood after the up-tempo act immediately before. Always difficult to follow such a lively act with a more emotional delivery, but you pulled this off well! Strong technically, and many creditable elements to your performance. Image needs further work and you need to find a musical identify in order to align looks, communication style and song choice. Click here for tips on act image and synchronisation. Good though.
Eloise - Loved the image, vocal and comfortable narrative. Nicely articulated, you sang through your nerves very well. Aim to make even more use of the stage and build on your use of body language and communication with even greater craft, engagement and assurance. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Good work though today, plenty of promise.
Evie Rogers - Loved the image - well considered for the material, which in itself suited your style. Strong vocals technically, occasional late placement of leading notes, but I’m nit picking. Very good indeed at such a young age! Don't forget to use the stage, and watch balance / projection of low range also. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. You will need to find a commercial edge to move to the next level but obvious why you reached the area final.
Brook Miller - Confident, well projected male vocal, comfortable guitar work, image a little casual – suggest more thought required to establish an image which works with what you are trying to achieve. Click here for tips on act image and synchronisation. Vocally strong, and you have something, but bear in mind ‘man and guitar’ is a saturated market and you will need something unique and saleable to be noticed.
Anya - Love the voice and material choice for your voice. There was much to like about this delivery, but you need to ensure the first few moments are less affected by nerves. Click here for tips on how to calm nerves. The opening moments always set the tone of what is to follow and it can be difficult to pull back a sense of conviction. Watch image also Anya. This all said, great vocal. There is good potential here with further work.
Ellie F - Brave register to open, and you nailed it! Especially after a lengthy introduction which was also brave, but in truth a little awkward. The delivery needed to move to another gear and sure enough it came in mid and higher range, with clear colour, individual character and technical security. Have a think about what to do on stage to maintain (or develop) a sense of momentum initially, and use the stage more. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. But a surprising act, did not expect such a strong vocal - well done.
Mia Cee - Great interpretation of a challenging original – you made it your own! (Don't like that expression, but you really did – it worked for you!). Click here for tips on singing with facial expressions. Love the subtle body language, confidence and use of stage. Very assured performer, great tone, musically mature. Delivered to a high standard, well done. (Split the judges).
Jodie E - Image worked, nice tone, subtle movement and word painting enhanced colour, communication and assurance of delivery. You perform with a conviction, and not afraid to hold back the bigger moments. Not sure about the material if I'm being very honest, it did not fully showcase you as a performer, but overall well worthy of a showcase opportunity. Click here for tips on song choices.
Caroline J - You look quite comfortable performing on a bigger stage, using dynamic contrast confidently, but not convinced about consistency / exactness of pitch accuracy and intervallic work. Image needs to work with your chosen style too. With greater training and experience, I can only see you improving and I would like to see it as it develops. Click here for tips on choosing the right singing teacher for you.
Ella B - Last but not least! Notwithstanding pitch issues on occasion, this was a very good delivery. Click here for tips on building stage confidence for singers. A natural performer, you belong in a girl band or as a solo singer. As one judge put it, “You are a star! Could be in the music industry right now….”. Enough said! Great image, convincing and good commercial potential. Well done.
16-20’s Feedback – North East Music Contest
Olivia Irvin - Wow - very sure of yourself! Established sense of identity and stylistic presence. Good diction at speed, good use of stage, good sense of command. Being honest, image took more of a centre stage than the music, out of balance here, but deserved your place in the area final, and scored well with the judges. Click here for tips on act image and synchronisation. Well done.
Arnold Fortune - Didn’t gel with the opening in truth and the backing track was not as good as you! Once settled though, technically very good. Will need more of a commercial edge to compete and move to the next level. Think about musical theatre? Image a bit safe, casual even, needing more consideration – suggest some advice here. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Technically no doubt about it, a secure piece of work.
Katia Kris - Great range, shaping and colour. Work on microphone mic to balance the bigger notes, and be careful not to be seen as trying too hard, plus some tongue tension too restricting your voice to the back of throat. Click here for tips on microphone technique. This said, good communicator, great image, and clearly able in your chosen genre. You nailed the performance!
Laura Elsy - A nice story telling voice, and with greater stage experience this will develop to greater extent. Watch plosives into the mic and image did not really work for the material or chosen identity stylistically. Click here for tips on act image and synchronisation. Not every leading note placement was exact also, possibly some nerves creeping in - try to retain composure and control all through. Click here for tips on how to calm nerves. Good work though.
Robyn - Very interesting (unique) tone and vocal style, almost ethereal…! Interesting song choice, safe, but captured the mood I think you wanted to portray. Give thought to image and how this aligns with your identity, and aim to make greater use of the stage. Click here for tips on act image and synchronisation. Vocally secure, but a definite underlying sense of tentativeness coming through.
Jenna and Elle - Liked this! Good duo, worked well in harmony and interplay. Vocally secure, confident and used the stage well. Guitar accompaniment did not always give smooth continuity, in transitions particularly. Click here for tips on playing guitar. Need to work on image between you, and also reflect what you are trying to do. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Technically great thought, and promise here. (Split the judges)
Charlotte - Great attention to a rounded performance – a package of image, careful song choice and technical showcasing. Your tone is very unique - you have something! You do need a better-quality backing track, and also give thought to a band, but for today’s competition, a great delivery, intended to showcase and you did that. Click here for tips on backing music. Well done.
Kyle - Firstly, technical issues well handled! These things happen to everyone at some point, but it creditably did not put you off your stride. Committed delivery, passionate and convincing. Good range, well controlled through the break, and whilst you do need to look at image this was a strong act today. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. I can see this developing into something promising…. nailed it Kyle!
SASS - Fantastic original, great guitar support, fab image! You work well together musically, look great together, and engage well. Harmony / unison nicely considered. Loved the interaction and secret smiles, musically established and mature, adding to the communication. Click here for tips for music duos and groups. Highly stylistic, great showcase. Really liked this - good luck in the final!
Simone Hobson - Loved the image, you tried to capture a sense of being individual and succeeded. A bit 'shouty' in the bigger notes – watch technique here. Click here for tips on how to achieve better vocal projection. Try not to fiddle with your hair too…! Much to like about this performance, but does need expressive and technical polish. A strong act with plenty of potential. Take advantage of the showcase opportunity!
Maxine - My goodness what a professional image - Fantastic! The delivery itself was good but I felt there was more – a little reserved today. I also thought pitching and some intervallic placements were not quite exact also. You clearly wanted, and achieved, a more musical approach which was stylistic and could work for you. Subtle expression enhanced the mood too. Click here for tips on singing with facial expressions.
Beth Swan - Captivating original, great voice, passionate and committed. Lovely story telling voice, nice warm guitar tones, beautifully balanced. This was a great piece of work, confidently delivered. Not sure about image, but could work in the right context with a deliberate commercial angle. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. A stronger act and scored well with then judges.
Jamie and Jerome - Just loved the opening! The look, the stance, the glances and interaction. Really worked, for you. Genuine personalities, pure music, delivered purely. This genre is more niche but you nailed it. The Studious Proclaimers! Musically thoughtful and creative, harmonies well blended. Inevitably, with a niche product, you will harness a difference of opinion and sure enough you split the judges, but I think you might have something here. Click here for tips for music duos and groups.
Kieran Liddle - Good communicator! Watch plosives into the microphone, image needs greater thought. Whilst you were engaged, there was a casualness which do not quite work. You were deserving of your place in the area final, and will now need greater attention to stylistic identify, commercial edge and image to move forward. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. All this said well done Keira, you nailed it!
21 and Over’s Feedback – North East Music Contest
Sophie Smith - Lovely vocals, good diction and confident. You need to give attention to Image – not sure as to your stylistic identity. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. You are good at what you do and will always attract an audience for your singing. To commercially move forward you need a greater sense of identity to build on your technical skill. I hope you take advantage of the showcase opportunity.
Beth Barlow - Great song choice, great look for the style, loved the vocal tone. Watch you do not lose too much projection / balance in low range. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Handled the technical glitch very well, second attempt equally as composed and as authentic as the initial. Great diction, body language, use of stage, and subtle personalisation. Added to the overall conveyance of mood. Very good Beth. In your chosen genre, you definitely have something….
Tom Thorne - Good male voice, strong and confident. Not sure about the track - I spent more time I think listening to see whether the melody and harmonic implication would settle – a shame as there was more to you than the track selection deserved! Watch support and control of sustained notes also. You showcased well, nice transposition, but be careful with song choices for short performances durations. Click here for the importance of song choices.
Kewen - Just a hint of Dylan? In fact, more than a hint, a lot of Dylan actually! Maybe this was the intention? Nice guitar ostinatos under the harp playing, of course giving stability in reference but also added to the continuity and tempo/momentum you had built up. Click here for tips on guitar dynamics. In this context, image generally worked, but the act as a whole will need a sizeable commercial angle to succeed. You are good at what you do, convincing and confident. Well done.
Charmaine - Nice work Charmaine! Comfortable vocal in the main, great attention to image, and you were enjoying your work on stage. Expressive, established and singing through a smile. Watch plosives into the microphone, and whilst you painted the words effectively, some judges thought it was a little over done for the song. Click here for tips on microphone technique. Watch exactness of pitch too….
Clef - Really enjoyed how you engaged with your song, giving it all…! A passionate and committed communication. Guitar work was steady, tonally not as good as you though. Click here for tips on playing guitar. Think about a backing musician? Emotional vocal tone, difficult not to be captivated. Great delivery Clef, be proud of your work. Have a think about what level you want to reach and go for it…..!
Stevey T - Great performance with an illness! Always love this male voice, and its captivating power. You have plentiful promise in your chosen genre and deserve to do well. You need to think about image commercially, and also within your style you will need something to stand out. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Scored well across the judges and you were unlucky not to go through tonight. Very close for the top scores.
Clair Jackson - Nice original, which clearly meant something to you and you conveyed it convincingly. More technical polish required and more thought as to how to present you and your work as a greater commercial package, but the delivery was good. Aim for greater balance of projection (strayed from the static mike a little too often). Click here for tips on how to achieve better vocal projection. Overall, comfortable, well done.
Jordan - Took a very long time to get going in a short performance, but good work! Room for greater expression and personalisation, try to develop your stage craft and not every pitch was exact today. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Give thought to image also. It looked like your first time on stage: If so gain as much experience as you can to find your identity and confidence. Click here for the importance of Open Mic nights for singers. If not, then re-consider your delivery style. There is potential here….
Stefano - If we leave to one side whether or not the intensification was contrived, or forced, or overdoing it, this was amazing. You got something Stefano. Now is the time to channel it into your next steps…. Technically very strong indeed, expressively inhibited, emotion at the core. Click here for tips on how to sing with emotion. Good luck in the final - make sure you keep it all in check stylistically and give it everything you've got.
Harry M - Liked the interplay between musical support and you! Guitarist couldn't stop watching you, partly musically for cues doubtless, but also it seemed like pride or admiration. Click here for tips for music duos and groups. Loved this! Liked your vocal tone, delivery style, the emotion and conviction. The image is a bit rough and ready to be deliberately stylistic, have a think about this. Overall, a little too raw to compete today overall, but you have something…
Dave Santana - Loved the original, tempo, groove, rhythmic all the way. Great lyrics built on to this and great vocal to top it off….! You need to think about identity and image to build on a good technical foundation, but keep working on your song writing abilities and see where you can go. Click here for tips on how to write songs. Also think about image and what to do in the non-singing parts, a bit awkward here. (Great cause!)
Sam Burton - Another great track at a great tempo and groove! Image was great, vocal was comfortable, song choice was safe, range was safe. (Watch support / balance in high range – technique needs reinforcement here). Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. As a package, it was less obvious what you were trying to achieve stylistically. This said you will attract an audience and you are good at what you do.
Melody Hodgson - Quirky! Loved the image and individual approach - you were clearly making a statement! Might be difficult to be taken too seriously with uke, but you have character and personality at the core, and you were one of the few in the show, all day even, who was truly able to entertain in terms of engagement and crowd participation. Click here for tips on audience engagement. Great tempo, great original!
Davey Blast - Brilliant lyrics! Nailed it! Not the most confident performance, and it may have surprised you to go through, but great content, highly percussive, consistent delivery. Click here for tips on building stage confidence for singers. Great technique, honest, and connected with the judges. Odd timing slip noticed, and more polish and commercial thought to image and how to package your obvious skill. You have talent – don't try and change it too much in the final. Lyrics specially for the final itself?
