Singers were given feedback at the North East England Showcase Final

NORTH EAST SINGING COMPETITION    

North East England Singing Competition: Music industry judges gave singers feedback at the North East England Singing Competition at Dewsbury Town Hall in Dewsbury this weekend. The North East England Singing Competition gave singers and songwriters the opportunity to gain a place at the Grand Final of Open Mic UK.

North East England Singing Competition – Open Mic UK 2016

The music industry judges at the North East England singing competition included:

  • Darran Barker, Head Judge; DB Music Management
  • Andy Baker, Founder of Resound Media, home of Sound Consultancy and Rocket Fuel. He's responsible for getting many new artists on national radio and has landed unsigned acts on tours with Little Mix, Leona Lewis and Lionel Richie.

North East England Singing Competition - Under 16’s Feedback

Rebecca Atkinson – You gave us a nice polished performance. Your young, fresh and very sweet! Bring more energy, conviction to make you really stand out. Try to relax on stage, you looked very nervous. Click here for tips on how to calm nerves. When reaching those big notes, try to take more breaths to project your voice and so you don’t take breaths in the wrong places. Fabienne – Your very confident! You have heaps of natural ability. We would love to hear you perform a bigger song, as it started to feel samey after a while. Click here for the importance of song choices. Good facial expressions, they were communicating the lyrics very well. We would like to hear of your vocal range, try to incorporate greater vocal dynamics. This will be more engaging for your audience. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. 

Rebecca Grace – Strong crisp vocals cut through beautifully. Bring more attitude and conviction to your performance to take it to the next level. There were some slight pitching issues and we could hear your vocals shaking. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help you strengthen your vocals. Also, work on your lower notes, these could do with being stronger. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics.

Isabel Foster – You were confident as soon as you walked on stage. Try not to be too ‘breathy’, this was distracting at times. Click here for breath control exercises – these will help you manage your breathing technique. Don’t be too quiet on your low notes, build up your vocal strength so these will be performed better. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. You performed competently, you have huge potential!

Olivia Crawford – Your vocals are insane! – and you have a superstar image to match. You have confident performance techniques. Your voice felt slightly shaky at the beginning, making the notes clash with the piano. Be sure to strengthen your vocals to better your overall performance. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help you strengthen your vocals. Bring us something more show-stopping and you will be world class Olivia.

Sophie G – You have such depth and individuality in your vocal tone, and the song showcased it. Try not to look so nervous! You were fiddling with your hair and clothes, this was distracting from your performance. You also didn’t seem as confident as you should be. Click here with some tips on how to calm nerves. We enjoyed your use of stage, this was engaging for your audience. Huge improvement Sophie, well done!

Harry Weatherhead – Good performance techniques. You can be excused from your memory loss as you pulled it straight back and delivered a fab vocal. We would like to hear of your vocal range, try to incorporate greater vocal dynamics. This will be more engaging for your audience. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. An emotional performance, it was very memorable.

Molly Scott – You meant business as soon as you walked on stage, you oozed star potential! Perfect song choice that showcased your impressive vocal, well done. Your voice sounded slightly shaky at the beginning, as you were expelling too much breath. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help you strengthen your vocals.

Sasha and David – What an energetic and fun performance! You stood out against your competitors. Would have liked a little more vocal content. Click here for tips on singing in a group. 10/10 for entertaining the crowd so well – you looked like you were enjoying yourselves.  

Sophie Cox – Love your vocals, they are very powerful and controlled. You sand with passion. Great communication of the lyrics. Be careful of taking breaths in the wrong places during your performance, a singing teacher will be able to help you with this. Click here for tips on choosing the right singing teacher for you. We liked your original, well done for having the confidence to perform it for us. 

Katie Richardson – Lovely to see a real twinkle in your eyes when you perform. A very competent and engaging performance. Try to take your breaths quicker, as it was putting you out of time at some instances. Click here for breath control exercises – these will help you manage your breathing technique. You have something Katie!

Brook – Your vocals are effortless! Confident delivery of the song. Try to add in more facial expressions to help portray the emotions in the song, this will be more engaging for your audience. Click here for tips on singing with facial expressions. Would like to have heard the falsetto, rather than changing it to be lower. It would be interesting to see how you could stretch yourself to an even bigger song. Your confidence and control had improved dramatically, you look like you love being on stage!

Katie Lewis – You were very poised and confident on stage. Not sure if this mash up of songs worked well together, maybe it would have been better to perform one song. Click here for the importance of song choices. Be careful of starting pitch and nasal tones, as sometimes it sounds like you are talking rather than singing. Clapping wasn’t needed as it was a slow song, swaying of hands would be more appropriate. Click here for tips on audience participation

Jenna Cole – You have a great voice. You have the potential to be a great performer, but you need to up your passion. Make sure your low notes are secure, there were some pitching issues as you moved to the high notes. You need to work on your vocals moving from the lower register to the higher. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics.  The song is very emotional, but we didn’t feel that from you. Have a think about how you can bring more emotion into your performance; click here for tips on being able to sing with emotion

Mirin & Lucy – There’s something very captivating about you! Your voices blend beautifully together. Try to up your harmonies and your conviction on stage, this will massively improve your overall performance. Click here for tips on singing in a group. Add in a greater stage presence, so you guys look like you should be there! This would also be more engaging for your audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers

Paige Flemming – What an effortless vocal, you delivered with an amazing tone! Think about being more original with your song choice, this will make you more memorable and show us your true artist identity. Click here for the importance of song choices. Liked how you changed the low notes to suit your vocal ability.

Elisha Lang – You have a beautiful voice, and you performed with great emotion. Good communication to your audience. Be careful of your breathing, you were taking breaths in the wrong places at times – especially on the long notes. The song choice is very predictable, have a think about choosing something else that will show us your originality as an artist. Click here for tips on performing a creative cover as a singer. 

Brook Burke – There is no doubt we have seen a future star. Work with a good singing teacher to assist you with song choices and vocal techniques, and keep improving! Click here for tips on choosing the right singing teacher for you. You have good performance techniques but we would up the key a little! You are very confident for your age.

Mia – Nice image! Make sure you get into the performance as soon as you step on stage, the performance was lacking. Bringing us more of a stage performance will be more engaging for your audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. You have a really good voice, although it lacks originality. You sound so similar to Amy Winehouse, singing one of her songs emphasises that. Choose a song that you can make unique, and bring a spin to! Click here for performing a creative cover as a singer. 

Lewis Watt – Your performance was of someone twice your age! Well done! You have a great vocal and you were very relaxed. Confident delivery also. Liked the way you used the guitar as your own arrangement. Click here for tips on playing guitar. Keep doing what you’re doing Lewis. 

Lara Firth – You put a lot into your performance facially, but you could have used the stage more. This will be more engaging for your audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. There was very good movement between your high and low registers, showing great vocal potential. You would be perfect for musical theatre. 

Rio-Leanna – What a voice you have, you are very confident! Make sure to use the stage more and perform at every opportunity, this will be more engaging for your audience. Aishlin M – There’s definitely something about you! Not sure the arrangement and song choice bought out your usual voice. Click here for the importance of song choices. Work on your breathing control, you need to make sure all notes are supported, especially in the higher parts. Zara – You have a powerful voice and lots of edge! A very confident delivery. Work on softening your tone a little to create more dynamics – it will make the pure notes even more impressive. Sparkle – Harmonies are tight and very confident! Be careful of the straining on the higher notes, these could be stronger. Click here for performing a creative cover as a singer. Strong vocals with an edgy song choice, would make you a really cool act!

Harriet Rose – Compelling, passionate, amazing voice and the perfect song choice to show it off! Be careful of pitching, make sure you listen to the track during your performance. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help you strengthen your vocals. Try not to lift your head when you sing! You gave us goose-bumps.  

Becky – They’re a very country feel to the song, you delivered it confidently. You perform like a true artist, which is admirable for your age! Burke Brothers – Your act has potential! Work on adding more harmonies, that’s what will sell you. Tighten up those vocals and perform as a duo not separately. North East England Singing Competition – 16-20s Feedback

Sydnie 6 – A nice performance and you looked beautiful on stage! You have a great voice. There is a lot of room for improvement on your vocal technique. Have a think about your song choice, choose something that you can make unique and show us your originality as an artist. Click here for performing a creative cover as a singer. Work on getting more of a connection from mix to head to avoid dramatically flipping into falsetto. Well performed.

Leanne – Nice take on such a well-known song! There are some nice elements and qualities to your voice. Try to have more control and let yourself go! With training, experience, and confidence you could be very good Leanne!

Charlotte Embling – Your performance began slightly rocky, but you rescued it well! Take care in choosing a backing track, choose one that can complement the pure and angelic voice you have. Work on a more consistent vocal as it dramatically changed from chorus to verse, it sounded like two different singers. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Violet Haze – Your stage presences is a little uncomfortable to watch. Try and relax and be natural on stage. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Love the colour theme blending throughout all three girls. Train your voices stronger individually so they will be stronger together, nice harmonies! Click here for tips on singing in a group Overall, an enjoyable performance. Well done girls!

Michaela White – You have a great voice, but the performance was all on one level. Think about incorporating greater vocal dynamics into your performance, this will be more engaging for your audience. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Try and use the stage more, an idea would be to let go of the mic stand and move around the stage. Believe in yourself and get some more confidence, this will all come with experience. Ellie Riddle – You have a gorgeous voice! We enjoyed your song choice. You need to work on some individuality and stage confidence, think about something that will make you different from other artists. Click here for finding an image as a musician. The lyrics are very emotional so you need to show us your connection to the song, you had your eyes closed for a considerable amount of time. This is key when connecting to your audience. Alice Donaldson – Very confident, especially with the difficult task of playing piano and singing! Lovely tone to your voice, we enjoyed your performance. We loved your original song, make sure you keep writing. Click here for tips on writing a song. You’ll go far! 

Louise – You need more diaphragm support, there was some wobbling in your voice. Work on developing more of a chest voice to sing with dynamics. Look at working with a singing teacher to do this. Lucy McGuire – We enjoyed your slight ‘breathy’ tone. You looked unsure, and your vocals were slightly unsteady. It’s such a heartfelt song, we needed you to lose yourself in the emotion. Honor – Your very confident and you have great performance techniques. Your vocals came across slightly shouty at times. Try to control your vocals, so you don’t have to shout. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help you control your vocals. You gave us an awesome performance, well done. You are fabulous! Try to show us more passion!

Megan Day – Loved the cover! It really looked like you enjoyed yourself on stage. We loved your harmonies and the arrangement to the song. The performance started weak, but you picked up as the chorus began. Make sure your vocals are well warmed up before you take to the stage. Click here for singing warm-ups. Let yourself go and give us more of a punch, and you will go a long way.

Ella Hudson – Great energetic performance. Pick a song that you can bring your own spin to and show us your originality as an artist. Click here for performing a creative cover as a singer. We would love to hear you sing something more current and upbeat, like an Ella Eyre song for example. Click here for the importance of song choices. You have a great voice and stage presence; you have massive potential! 

Shanaya – Wow what a voice! Try not push and force your performance. There were a few too many melisma’s? Your trying too hard to show off at times. Minimise this slightly, and you will be amazing. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. You’re such a show stopper!  

Simone Hobson Bennett – Clear crisp vocals. Be careful with how you come off some of the words, there were a few dodgy tones. Loved the song choice! You need to add greater emotion and performance, as it needs to be more engaging for your audience. Click here for tips on being able to sing with emotion. Try not to push your voice, with the right help and guidance you could really improve! 

Kezia Hughes – You sing and play beautifully! Your vocals have serious potential, it felt all one level. Try to add greater vocal dynamics to change the levels of your performance. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Be careful of taking breaths in the middle of the phrases, especially in the acapella section. Click here for breath control exercises – these will advise you on your breathing technique. Overall, a very good performance.

Theo – Very confident and good use of stage! There’s something very refreshing about your voice, its very marketable. Have a think about joining with a band, a blues vibe would have serious potential.  Make sure you hold the microphone right, bring it close to your lips to maximise projection. Ewan Legg – Gorgeous voice! The depth in your voice is beautiful, it’s great to hear you staying true to your regional accent. Your original was very catchy! Keep up with the song writing. Try and put more energy into your performance, click here for stage performance tips for singers. Make sure you own the stage! Then you will have star potential. 

Alexandra Wood – Great image, performance skills and song choice. It was a natural performance, was great to see you smile on stage. Your vocals lacked in certain sections of the song. Work with a singing teacher to strengthen your vocals, click here for tips on choosing the right singing teacher for you. You have massive potential, with the right guidance you will be very good. Well done. 

Marianne – Great voice and very entertaining! You have dynamite vocals, and gave a hugely energetic performance. It was very cabaret so didn’t show us your originality as an artist. Click here for performing a creative cover as a singer. You have star quality Marianne. 

Victor Ray – Gorgeous voice. Your performance wasn’t perfect, but there was something so honest and passionate about your performance that made it very special. The Hurst Sisters -  Two beautiful voices together sound stunning! So, polished, pure and honest. Your performance has improved so much. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. You look like a real credible act, well done. 

North East England Singing Competition – 21 and Over's Feedback

Jen Stevens – Such a unique voice and style! Theirs a gap in the market for someone like you. Your original song could have had a catch to it, it’s not particularly memorable. Evie – You have a nice voice and quirky image. Don’t be afraid to use the stage! This will be more engaging for your audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Rethink the electric guitar, maybe an acoustic would be more appropriate for your vocals and performance. Great communication of the lyrics, you looked like you were enjoying yourself.

ED – It’s clear you put a lot of hard work and passion into your music! You performed a very nice original – we believe you could be very popular for your target audience. You have great charisma and flaunted your vocal range. Your guitar sounded slightly out of tune, make sure this is right during the sound check. Click here for tips on standard guitar tuning. Lewis – Brave song choice! You have a nice warm tone in your vocals. It was slightly pitchy and shaky in places. Baby Taylor – Lovely meaning behind the original. You need to work on your diction, be sure to pronounce every word so the audience can connect to your lyrics. Darren Wilson – Very cool and talented! Great upbeat and communication. We would like to hear more of your range, this will be more engaging for your audience. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Your vocals also went slightly ‘shouty’ at times – we got the feeling that you hadn’t warmed up before your performance. Make sure to do this, as this will eliminate any minor vocal issues. Jayvox – Such a powerful and individual performance. You’re very marketable! You connected emotionally to the song, which was very engaging for your audience. David English – Touching meaning behind the song, but you lost us. Work on fully connecting to your audience – click here for tips on audience engagement. You need to know exactly who you are as an artist and who you want to be. You need to find something unique.

Amanda Simon – You look the part! You have a good voice. This is a brave song choice, but very predictable. You controlled the verses well, but it felt too big in the choruses. James Hoffman – A very nice voice and good original. Arrangement has a solid flow and beautiful melody. Next time have a think about using your static piano, it felt like you were hiding behind it. Alfi – Nice unpredictable song choice! It was great to hear a different music genre. You connected with the audience well on stage. Keep training your vocals, the better they become, the great your confidence. Click here for choosing the right singing teacher for you. You performed well. 

Therese Carroll – Amazing voice and stage presence. You have a fab image! You need to pull your voice in slightly for certain aspects in the song, use dynamics to always keep the audience on the edge of their seat. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Next time, rethink the mic stand, or use it to your potential. Move away from it, this will better your stage performance skills. A very enjoyable performance, well done Therese. 

Chloe Darson – Good communication of the lyrics. It was a nice take on the cover, it was beautifully performed and you fully let go in your performance! Eleanor Hemingway – Nice arrangement and take on a well-known cover. It was a good decision to raise the key to suit your voice.  You have a beautiful pure voice. Joe Boyle – You make us smile! You have gorgeous elements in your voice, your vocals suit the style. Click here for act image and synchronisation. Alex Michael – A very passionate performance. You need to work on your diction, you need to sing the song clearly so the audience can hear every word. They need to be able to connect to your lyrics. Steve Wraith – A good performance and song choice. However, most of the song was out of key and out of time. With some guidance, you can improve on these aspects and better your performance. Click here for tips on choosing the right singing teacher for you. It feels like you are trying to emulate Michael Jacksons voice, make your voice your own.

Delivery Note – Not sure about the slow tempo, it should be an upbeat song. It did speed up, but it needs to be like that throughout. Click here for the importance of song choice. Look for some more originality, you have nice vocals but we need to see something more exciting. Click here for performing a creative cover as a singer. You guys have good voices, keep practising so you continue to improve. 

Charlotte Beth – You sung a classic song very competently. It was a very strong start. Try to improve on your performance skills, add in more hand movements or use the stage. This will be more engaging for your audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Practice your mic technique, hold the microphone closer to your lips to maximise projection. Phillip – Your voice has potential; it would have been showcased more effectively with a less obvious song choice. Le Destra – A refreshing change hearing a jazz classic. Your voice is well controlled, well done for making such an effort with your image. It was great to see something different. Harry Middleton – You’ve got an easy vibe and we love the version of the song. Although the rasp in your vocal is very characterful you may be careful of vocal damage. All singers and songwriters successful through the North East England Singing Competition progressed onto the next stage of the competition at the Grand Final Showcase which will be held at The NEC Birmingham on Saturday 28th January!
