Feedback was written for the Area Finalists at the North West England Singing Competition

North West England Singing Competition: Music industry judges gave the Open Mic UK Area finalists feedback at the Royal Northern College of Music’s North West England Singing Competition. The Area Finalists performed in the hopes of gaining a place in the National Grand Final.

North West England Singing Competition – Open Mic UK 2016

The music industry judges giving feedback at the North West England singing competition included:

North West Singing Competition - Under 16’s Feedback

Amber Wheeler – Loved that you had given the consideration to your image. Click here for the tips on finding an image as a musician and why it’s so important to an artist. Solid song, try and punch the hook out more by working the dynamics. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Try and bring more movement to the performance, this will be more engaging for your audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers

Miles Pooler –  Lovey tone to your vocal especially when you punch it out, keep the focus on the note to the end rather than being a bit lazy at times. Try and reach out to us as an audience rather than being too self-indulgent. Do this by using eye contact and moving around on stage. Click here for the importance of eye contact. Vocally watch your tuning at times. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help strengthen your vocals. Your were performing with emotion, well done. Girls will love you! 

The Icon – You guys are fantastic musicians and very engaging as you use the stage well! We enjoyed the mashup but it would be great to see something more original. We would love to see your personalities shine through the music! Click here for performing a creative cover as a singer. Good eye contact and super engaging!

Cat Giller – The song has got real potential, quirky and catchy. Watch you mic control as your volume is dropping every time your mic wonders away from your mouth. Be sure to keep the mic close to your lips to maximise your projection. Click here for tips on microphone techniques. Performance wise you showed us some great moves, but we need more movement on the stage to give more presence. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. It was a different performance, and refreshing to watch. 

Glitch – Not sure what the intro had to do with the song. The female vocals are sweet, but need to work on the spoken parts. Song wise, you need to work on the arrangement. The song wasn’t structured as well as it could have been around the hook which was over used. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. You both have a nice control and good voices. 

Cassie – You have a super vocal and have all the moves, but try and commit even more to them, give it everything! 90% there on, just that touch more passion wouldn’t go a miss. Your song choice felt a little dated, look at choosing a current song, or something that you can bring your own spin to and show us your originality. Megan-Louise – You’re a really likeable artist Megan-Louise. Swing your movement with more commitment! Click here for stage performance tips for singers. You have a lovely tone and you sustain the notes well so they resonate well. You did lose control in areas, strengthen your vocals to limit this. Click here for vocal exercises for singers, these will help do this. Start to believe in yourself more and really commit as you have bags of ability! 

Yasmin – You have a cool image and you connected well to the song, would have liked you to have changed it more or given us your spin on the cover to show us more originality. Adalaide – You have the most amazing vocal, reaching top notes with effortless and ease. Like to see you perform your own songs as you can be your own artist. Click here for tips on writing a song. Vocally one of the best of the day but the song choice showed a lack of originality and what you can do! It felt slightly dated for yourself. Click here for the importance of song choices. You have a great range, keep performing!

Niamh Scott-McCormack – You have bags of potential but you need to work on developing your projection and range to be even better, a good vocal coach can assist you to work on these areas. Click here for tips on choosing the right singing teacher for you. Song choice was good and current just try and make it more of your own, play around with the delivery and words to be different. Click here for more on performing a creative cover as a singer. Make sure you have your backing track to the right length, as this can affect your performance. 

Millie-Mae – Good interpretation of a fantastic song. Click here for more on performing a creative cover as a singer. You were pulling away too quickly with the mic on the top notes, you need to keep the mic close to your lips to sustain your projection which was your real impact moment! Click here for more on microphone techniques. You really needed to punch out the chorus with the biggest projection you’ve ever done! Click here for tips on vocal projection

Tammy Wilde – Your vocals are very good, we really enjoyed the song! Remember to consider the positive optimism of the song and not the hardship; the church bells should be a happy emotion so embrace the full range of emotions and bring them out in the song. Georgia Bunnell – Vocally fantastic and you really connect well to the song. Through your performance and emotion you are telling a story, which is really engaging for your audience. Caitlin Booth – Such a good song, bags of emotion in the song which you need to convey with the utmost dynamics. Click here for more on vocal dynamics. You are demonstrating so much talent, just keep performing as much as you can and the progression will come. Olivia Hunter – You are demonstrating so much talent, just keep performing as much as you can and the progression will come. Work on your breathing and control, this would strengthen your performance. Click here for breath control exercises for singers – these will help improve your breathing technique. 

Georgia Ridehalgh – You have a good clear projection and good control in your vocals. Good song choice, however it’s very west end stage and as such fails to show us much of you as an original artist. Paris Brown – You have a sweet tone! You need to keep working hard to develop your projection and range. Click here for tips on vocal projection. Look to use the stage more, this will be more engaging for your audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. You were slightly off key, work on your breathing technique and stamina. Click here for breath control exercises for singers – these will help improve your breathing technique. With some practise, and more performance you will be a little star!

Under 16’s Feedback – Open Mic UK

Katie Clark – Good expression, just take care not to get too ahead with the lyrics and lose your timing. Click here for tips on audience participation in a performance; suggest it’s best you just concentrate on getting up and running with the performing. With a bit of development you could be a real force. You are dropping the projection of your vocal with lazy technique, be sure to keep the mic close to your lips to maximise projection.  Click here for tips on microphone techniques

Emily Nevitt – Loving your vocal super tone and the song really suited your range. Look to work on developing the dynamics and really projecting out the chorus. Click here for more on adding more vocal dynamics to your performance. You gave a very confident performance, you have masses of potential.

Tom Mouse Smith – You are fantastic, super projection. Work on looking up more and engaging with your audience, you are looking down too much at your guitar. In a few years, you’re going to be seriously great, keep performing as much as possible to maintain your talent. 

Abi Kelly – Super song and you sing it well! You have a great voice. Your expression is seriously lacking you look so depressed when your singing! Look to practice at home use the mirror, film yourself and analyse other acts on YouTube to pick up and integrate what you need to incorporate into your performance. Keep practising, and you will have potential!

T’mya Fyffe – You have a sweet tone! You need to keep working hard to develop your projection and range to be even better. Click here for tips on vocal projection. You are demonstrating so much talent, just keep performing as much as you can and the progression will come. Beth Swan – Vocally you have a lot of power and the dynamics really show off this power and the control. We enjoyed your keyboard playing! Click here for tips on performing with music keyboards. Overall, an excellent performance, well done Beth!

Hollie Robinson – A young star with a booming vocal, just remember on occasions to hold back to then give more impact on the big notes. Click here for tips on vocal projection. Excellent song choice, it flaunted your great range. You have a commercial voice, with potential to record great songs. You are going to be amazing Hollie, keep doing what you’re doing! 

Antonia – You looked nervous on stage, think about minimising these before stepping on stage. Click here for tips on how to calm nerves. Dami – Unbelievable! You have serious potential Dami. Great to see you had synchronised your outfits which looked professional, you both looked very elegant on stage. Use added vocal training to bring out the best in your vocals, we look forward to hearing more from you!

Charlotte Ryan – You have a sweet tone! You have a very good voice. You need to keep working hard to develop your projection and range. Click here for tips on vocal projection. Molly Stanway – Ukulele can be a great sound but can always sound a little thin also. With practise, you will become a very accomplished act. North West Singing Competition – 16-20’s Feedback

Georgia – Good tone to your vocal but your guitar sound was a little thin and the performance lacked passion. Look to commit to the performance more, this will be more engaging for your audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Also worth reading the following on playing guitar, as some added guitar dynamics will bring further engagement to your performance. Would love to hear a radio recorded version of this song! 

Georgia Farrar – Nice soulful song, look to really punch through that hook even more, sometimes less is more, so perhaps let the song breathe more before you hit that chorus hard. Elle Finch – Liked your interpretation of the original but try to enhance this originality even more, this will be where we see your star quality. This will be more engaging for your audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. You have a nice image and voice!

Olivia Love – Cute little song, but was a little repetitive even on first listen. Ukulele also is quite limited to give it more dynamic chord changes. Look to add more lyrics to vary the loop and keep the interest as the song has masses of potential. Click here for tips on writing a song. Changing the dynamics can keep the interest going but fundamentally it needs change to release the potential of the song. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Be sure to bring your lips close to the mic to maximise projection!

Owen Holt – Lovely tone and rasp to your vocal. Liked that you changed it with your own rap. Click here for more on performing a creative cover as a singer. Look to give us more eye contact to fully engage your audience, they will also be able to connect to the emotions in the song. Click here for the importance of eye contact. Be more direct with your eye contact and performance so the audience feel even more drawn in. You have a unique sound, stick with it! 

Rachel Boal – It’s difficult to perform a song that is so well known, as you will always be compared to the original. Work with a good singing teacher, they will able to bring the out the best aspects in your vocals. Click here for tips on choosing the right singing teacher for you. Overall, a good performance! 

Hilla – You have big power in your vocals! Have a think about your song choice, it’s very west end and as such fails to show us much of you as an original artist. Keep practising and performing so your vocal control improves. 

Cat Perrin – You have lots of power vocally but learn the times when to drive it through for more impact! Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. You started with impact but needed to commit and focus more on the performance to drive and keep the interest going throughout. The more you can perform and practice live on stage the better to learn your craft. Click here for tips on building stage confidence for singers. You have a very easy listening voice.

Katrina-Rae – Performance could have flowed more, the guitar playing felt heavy and harsh. Click here for tips on playing guitar. Regarding your facial expressions, remember to consider the positive and optimism of the song and not the hardship. Click here for tips on singing with facial expressions. You have a nice voice! Now focus on how you make your performance more engaging for your audience. Click here for tips on audience engagement.  

Mhairi Henderson – We could feel your nerves, try to think of methods to limit these. They can restrict your vocals. Click here for tips on how to calm nerves. The more you perform the more you will improve. It’s difficult to pick an iconic song by an artist like Sam Smith as you will always be compared to the original. We love the lower range in your vocals! 

Rebecca Melia – Song choice was a little dated, think about choosing a current song, or something that you can bring your own spin to as an artist, and show us your originality. Matt Bankhurst – Using the loop pedal can be very disengaging whilst building up, however it can also give depth and show creativity! Click here for more on a guitar loop pedal performance. Just consider being as engaging as you can during the build-up, reach out to your audience and look to build up after an intro rather than from the very start. You’re very different and it’s refreshing, you’re a brave performer!

Open Mic UK – Feedback for 16-20’s

Michael T Ogilvie – It’s very difficult to choose a song that’s so popular, as you will always be compare to the original. Billie Christiansen – Cute interpretation with the ukulele! You need to give us more expression to convey the emotion in the song, this will be more engaging for your audience. Victoria K – You have an incredible tone and power to your vocal! Liked that you started the performance sat down! This gave your performance some variety. EnHarmonics – Loved your harmonies, always key for a duo! Click here for tips on singing in a group. You have great voices and we enjoyed the mashup, it showed us your originality. However, have a think about the amount of songs you use, and the transitions between each song. Sometimes it can be a little too much! Click here for tips on song mashups. Try to complement each other’s vocals, instead of trying to gain power over each other. 

Shaquille Silva – You started quite harshly! You need to take care to give us the initial impact to a performance. This will be more engaging for your audience. Use your eye contact to reach out to the audience and connect us even more. Click here for the importance of eye contact. Keep working on your vocals, with added training they have potential. 

Georgia Gagen – Look to find yourself as an artist by doing creative covers, doing covers like the original is showing off your voice, but not showing us any originality. Click here for tips on performing a creative cover as a singer. Also, don’t sacrifice control for power! Forcing it just loses control and your tone. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help control your vocals. With some added training, you will have potential. 

Maddie Elvin – Started off very nervous! Look to minimise these, so you can focus fully on your vocals and performance. With confidence will come a stage presence, we need to see you use more of the stage and make it your own! Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Be sure to seek training to help bring out the best aspects in your vocals. 

Aleya Mae – You looked and performed differently! You were refreshing to watch. Song was solid, look to work the dynamics around the chorus. This will be more engaging and exciting! You’re very original, with a great voice.  

Benjamin – Very dramatic performance, well-rehearsed and professional! Think about your image as branded t-shirts probably isn’t a defining image? You want to be an identifiable artist, so you’re remembered. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. You’re very confident on stage, and you have a good voice. Overall a great performance!

Cerys Hanson – You’ve got a good image and it was a nice song choice. Try and connect us with the emotion of the song click here for more on how to sing with emotion. North West Singing Competition – 21 and Over's Feedback

Mr Life – Brave to freestyle but you can still perform and engage us as an audience. Need to lose the lyrics and work us as an audience! Practice so you can’t simple forget. Try not to imitate the American accent. 

Tasmin B – Liked your song choice, look to work around the backing vocals a little better to co-ordinate a bounce from one lyric to the other. Lots of movement in the song, so use that work the stage as you have a quirky authentic sound. It wasn’t always clear what you were singing, click here for ways to improve diction. It was a really cool mashup. 

Lily James – You have a lovely tone and power to your vocal! So difficult to pick an iconic song and do it better? Especially, when we hear the song sung live perfectly on the radio so often. Elliot Platt – Love this song engaging and catchy. You drove the song well to deliver the hook too, liked the guitar riff before you went into the next section of the song. Performance wise look to give more movement especially when have space away from singing, click here for stage performance tips for singers. You’ve got good control and you’re a good guitarist.

Chloey Rose – Like the mood and vibe, you could look to embrace that mood more in your expression. At times the flow could be better for what is otherwise a really engaging song and performance. Click here for more on the important of singing with facial expressions

Sarah Mac – Click here for more on the importance of song choices.  See the following for performing a creative cover as a singer. Look to give the performance more purpose and movement. An entertaining performance but not original which it needs to be, so much being down the local pub on a Friday listening to the local entertainment. 

Rhea Aimee – You have a lovely tone and power to your vocal! So, difficult to pick an iconic song and to do it better? Especially when we hear the song sung live perfectly on the radio so often. Danny – Look to work the lyrics and dynamics of the song more click here for more on guitar dynamics to keep the song moving and varied throughout. Same with the performance vary it around more! The beatboxing was cool, you stood out.

Hannah Thomas – Love your songs, they tell a story and flow on the journey. Superb and beautiful! You work the dynamics to drive the song perfectly….one to watch at the Grand Final! 21 and Over’s Feedback – Open Mic UK 2016

Chris Everard – Like the song but on occasions you are pushing the vocal and losing the control. Vocally may be worth working on your breathing. Song wise it needs a little work to not make so repetitive, perhaps amend a few of the lyrics to be even better, click here for tips on writing a song

Stacey Lynn – You have a super vocal, but click here for more on the importance of song choices and perhaps a missed opportunity for us to see what you could be as an original artist.  See the following for performing a creative cover as a singer or look to start writing your own songs. Really good performer, made us engage with you well.

L-Marie – Song flows well, need to give the performance more attitude, really commit and work that stage click here for more on the bringing more of a performance, stage performance tips for singers. Song wise needed a more defining change up or break down in it…lacked dynamic change. Click here for more on adding vocal dynamics to a song.

Tara Lou – Liked your style and image click here for the importance of finding an image as a musician. Watch your mic control as you pulling away at times and losing your projection click here for more on microphone techniques. Liked your original song and delivery, sounded awesome. Take care not to force the vocal. Your high range is amazing.

Aeron Jones – You have good intensity in your eyes to get us engaged. Obviously playing musical theatre is performing a part and as such you aren’t original. Look to make the most of the instrumental sections for expression, click here for singing with facial expressions. You’ve got a great range. It’s an emotional song, so it’s difficult to perform, but it seemed very static.

Kyran Seth – Heard this song a lot today! Try and pick something a bit more leftfield as there are so many songs out there you could do. Your nerves showed through so look to perform as much as you can so you perform without showing the nerves, click here for more on how to calm nerves. Watch you mic control, click here for more on microphone techniques. You seemed a bit too serious, you’ve got to look like you’re enjoying the performance, as it shines through when it’s obvious. 

Alex Keirl – Super vocal, look to work super hard on performing and expression to be a bit more authentic. Very comfortable singing a big song!! Performance needed varying, click here for stage performance tips for singers. You’ve got great stage presence and an amazing range to match. You’re a potential star!

DC Cool – Love the song choice and the keys gave it a lovely live feel. Lovely arrangement and super vocal along with dynamic to finish with a super climax, click here for more tips on vocal dynamics. Looking forward to your next performance!

Alice Laybourne – You have bags of potential but need to work on developing your projection and range to be even better, a good vocal coach can assist you to work on these areas to be even better, click here for finding a singing teacher. Song choice wise was a bit dated; just try and make it more of your own, play around with the delivery and words to be different click here for more on performing a creative cover as a singer. You’ve got great power behind your vocal.

Ed Potter – Catchy song, look to drive through the hook and you’ve got a catchy phrase in there. Could refine your expression a little more to be on point, do your research on YouTube and analyse other top acoustic performances and try to incorporate. Click here for singing with facial expressions

Danny Beattie – Good effort on the image attempt LOL. Using the loop pedal can be very dis-engaging whilst building up, however it can also give depth and show creativity click here for more on when or when not to do a guitar loop pedal performance. It’s refreshing to see someone to something so different!

NORTH EAST ENGLAND SINGING COMPETITION

All singers and songwriters successful through the North West England Singing Competition progressed onto the next stage of the competition at the Grand Final Showcase which will be held at The NEC Birmingham on Saturday 28th January!
