OPEN MIC NIGHTS BRIGHTON
Open mic nights took place in Brighton for the Open Mic UK Brighton 21 and Overs Regional Finals!
Open mic nights Brighton: National singing competition Open Mic UK held its Regional Finals at The Hove Centre, Brighton this weekend and saw Brighton’s best singers, songwriters and solo artists take to the stage in their bids to impress a music industry judging panel and capacity crowd.
The regional finals were judged by music industry specialists who have provided stage performance tips for each of the acts that performed. The people the Brighton musicians wanted to impress were vocalist Lesley Mitchell, award winning musical director from The Theatre Workshop Marc Yarrow, Cameron Devlin from Hidden Cam Studios and Head of Future Music, Chris Grayston.
Brighton’s regional final was rounded off by our guest act, Jess Spink.

Kim Africa – Potential is there but the song choice under pressure was too big for you, please click here for the importance of song choice. Good eye contact throughout to connect to the audience.
Natalie Bond – Good singer but the song choice was a little karaoke, click here for the importance of song choice and more helpful advice here to performing a creative cover. Try to show the emotion of the song in your performance, click here for advice on bringing emotion out facially with your facial expression.
Kane Tracey – Worked the lyrics well but need to find your own sound a little so you are unique. Also watch your facial expressions as can come across a little harsh and need to embrace the lighter side of the emotion too, click here for tips on facial expressions.
Andrea – Good vocally. When hitting those top notes be careful to give the low sections just as much attention and because of your accent you need to take care with the diction. Click here for advice on diction.
Daniel Thomas Gray – Your personality shines through on the stage. Remember to use the dynamics and projection to better affect to drive through the chorus hook; it’s too upfront for too long, give it a bit of breath. Click here for advice on dynamics and click here for ways to improve projection. Adlib at the end is a bit weak.
Dazza – Good song. Your guitar playing is a real strength, along with a good vocal tone. Is it a hit single, probably not unless from an established artist so perhaps need a real instant song to stand out even more.
Beau – Fantastic song, really flows and easy to relate too! Take care with your mic control is the only fault in a very engaging performance, click here for microphone techniques.
Busker Tom – Liked the song and you are a committed performer. Not sure on the image although at least you are putting one out there. Take care not to have too much instrumentation on the performance as it’s not as engaging.
Open Mic Nights Brighton – feedback continued
F Zero – Song has potential but if you cup the mic you can lose projection, click here for advice on microphone techniques. Needed more visually as a performance, where were the dancers? You also needed to use the stage more. A vocal coach will be able to help strengthen your projection and range to be even better, click here for the importance of voice training.
Deano – Such passion and commitment to the performance. Watch your facial expressions as sometimes they come across a little harsh and try to have a few glances between performers to show a connection on stage, click here for tips on facial expression.
Heidi Perrins – Lovely tone and some wonderful guitar backing. Watch you microphone technique as you as losing your projection at times, click here for advice on microphone techniques. Good to see you take the mic off the stand and work the stage a bit more click here for tips on stage presence.
Kathryn Anderson – Great original very authentic not sure the UK market is where you can market the song to its full potential but get your target demographic right and there is potential.
Si McLean – Good connection to the song. Try and embrace the lighter emotions in the facial expressions tend to be only expressing anguish and pain, click here for tips on facial expression. Good vocal tone and an overall enjoyable performance.
Hollie Rodgers – Nicely worked song, good projection and good guitar work, not sure the song has the instant factor to get a wider appeal? Click here for tips on writing songs.
Rowl-E - Visually a much stronger act on stage and you work well together. Facial expressions are sometimes a little harsh need to vary the emotions in the face more, click here for tips on facial expression. Wonder if a female vocalist would give you an extra dimension?
Alex Attrill - Great image. You play the keyboard so nicely. The mash up was a good idea, flowed nicely. The problem with these songs is that we hear them a lot, it makes it difficult for you to stand out, click here for the importance of song choice.
