OPEN MIC NIGHTS CAMDEN

Open mic nights took place in Camden for the Open Mic UK Camden 21 and Overs Regional Finals!

 Open Mic Nights Camden

Open mic nights Camden: National singing competition Open Mic UK held its Regional Finals at Dingwalls, Camden this weekend and saw Camden’s best singers, songwriters and solo artists take to the stage in their bids to impress a music industry judging panel and capacity crowd.

The regional finals were judged by music industry specialists who have provided stage performance tips for each of the acts that performed. The people the Camden musicians wanted to impress were Zoe Miranda from Unshredded Magazine, musical theatre and choir director Mike Freeman, David Flynn from Little F Management, Gerry Driver and Head of Future Music, Chris Grayston.

Camden’s regional final was rounded off by our guest act, previous winner of Open Mic UK, Natalie Shay.

H Boss – Really strong performer but need to take the competition seriously turning up late seems to be a theme. Stick to being on the stage because that’s where the lighting is and where people can see you properly, click here for tips on performance.

Victoria – Strong vocally but song choice and performance showed us little of you as a performer, click here for more information on performing a creative cover as it lacked originality. Take care not to push the vocal and lose your control.

Zella – Need to perform more as your mic control was poor which affected your projection, click here for tips on mic control. Liked you used the stage but use the stage with purpose, click here for tips on performance.

Paul Burnell – Good rasp to your vocal, a change in dynamics would have given the track more drive and tempo keeping the interest going till the end, click here for advice on dynamics.

So Soul Boy – Watch your timing and delivery it would help us connect with you as a performer more. The song is chilled and flows well but it needs a stronger vocal hook at the moment it flows rather than sticks in your head.

Nick Martinez – An electric guitar can often crowd a performance which on this occasion it was guilty of and perhaps an acoustic guitar would have served you better. It made it difficult to connect to the song and show off its best potential.

Sandra Mae – This sounds a hit straight out of the 70’s something you could imagine the Supremes performing in their hay day. You should have looked to bring more colour and visuals to the stage perhaps props and or dancers, click here for tips on performance.

Megan Leigh Mason – You set the foundation with good facial expression, but it wasn’t the best bridge to the chorus think it would be worth writing a bridge lyrically. Some good ideas and potential but it could have flowed better, click here for tips on writing songs.

Romaine Dixon – Used the stage well and gave good eye contact to connect with the audience,  click here for audience participation. Better dynamics would have given more depth to the performance. Make sure you don’t force the vocal and lose control.

Angus Omega – Talented boy and if you tidy up on a few bits could be exceptional. Eye contact will help us connect to your performance, click here for tips on performance. Better mic control would really help your vocal projection, click here for tips on mic control.

Alex Spinney – Lovely vocal control and good delivery. You have a voice that fits the emotion needed for musical theatre performances, perhaps that’s an option!

Jay Unique – Clever beatboxing. Good blend between performers and loved the eyebrows. Song was good but could have flowed better with reworked dynamics, click here for advice on dynamics.

Bragi – Decent song but a little on the sleepy side look to work the dynamics and work your projection to really work the different sections of the song as you wise, click here for advice on dynamics.  Good luck in Edinbugh!

Indre – Need a bit more than a karaoke version to be original as an artist, click here for more information on performing a creative cover. Cracking vocal and a real connection to the song. Try and look to vary the facial expression to the lighter and euphoric emotion in the song too, click here for more on facial expression.

Bryony Purdue – Breath-taking. Superbly controlled vocal and performance. Very convincing and you took us into the emotion of the song. Felt like it needed something else as the second half we had got used to the same delivery and expression so maybe worth varying.

Richard Wyles – It felt like you had a big simmering voice ready to go but you’re not fully in control, click here for tips on mic control. Need to climb more into the performance, use the stage and take the mic off the stand to connect more to the audience. Great song choice!

Bee – Remember you start performing as soon as you are in the audience eye line, so hit the stage with a persona. Performers need to engage on stage to show a connection, the guitarist and singer felt quite detached from one another. Guitarist should have been set back a little on stage and Bee come to the front. Vocally you need to strengthen your voice to extend the range and projection which a good vocal coach will be able to assist you with, click here for importance of voice training. Image was lovely.

Open mic nights Camden

Nicola Gossip – The electric guitar has its place but it can crowd the song and not let it breathe which it did border on at times. Nicola needed to act out the role more to convince us of the character and story of the song. The performance needed more engagement between performers as there was no chemistry, click here for tips on duos and groups. Like the quirky style!

Emmanuel – A really different song, need to look like you are not trying so hard, use that stage and get down on a level to connect with your audience. You looked up way too much, click here for tips on mic control.

Elle Roberts – Good backing sound but the vocalist needed to not hide so much in the background and be climbing all over it! Very little chemistry on stage between performers giving a detached feel. The singer was looking across to the guitarist but there was nothing back, smile at each other like you know you are smashing it.

Shani Cherry – Your singing an urban song with a heavy metal t –shirt on, click here for synergy of music and image. Potential is there with a good stage performance. Not sure the song choice suited the sweeter tone of your vocal range, click here for the importance of song choice.

Katie Broderick – Nice tone but it failed to be different enough from the original and needed you to go up another level with the dynamics and really climb into the ending, click here for more on facial expression. Try and engage with the audience a little more, to bring more to the performance.

Naya Mei – A loop pedal can work well but if ultimately all it is achieving is providing a backing track and takes almost a minute to build up , what’s the real point? It was also a tad repetitive. Open your eyes and engage, along with that and taking a while to build up the backing track you lost opportunities to connect with your audience. Remember you only have a few minutes to impress!

Jade Elliott - Diction was good but didn’t feel like it was anything original. Good confidence and presence.

Cinderella B – Performed as one with a committed and emotional performance. Good dynamics and a massive vocal that’s as good as we’ve seen you! You’re a little powerhouse. So much energy.

Samuel James – Very authentic song. Good delivery. Confident performance and good charisma. Open your eyes so that the audience can feel the connection, click here for tips on performance.

Michael Peters – Song has real potential, think you need to look to work on bringing an image and persona as an act, click here for image. Perhaps also consider a different name as an act, click here for the importance of a stage name. Once you warmed up you had a real vocal range, watch your diction.

Sam Lunn – Found it thoroughly captivating; you can never go wrong with a cello to achieve a full sound. Have you considered becoming a trio?

April – Visually being such an out and out pop song needed backing dancers and a well worked routine. Loved your confidence. Great energy.

Pepper – Great song writing. Work with great co-writers to develop that talent. You drew the audience in so well. Phenomenal voice.
