Open mic nights Essex: National singing competition Open Mic UK held its Regional Finals at The Marconi Social Club, Essex this weekend and saw Essex’s best singers, songwriters and solo artists take to the stage in their bids to impress a music industry judging panel and capacity crowd.
The regional finals were judged by music industry specialists who have provided stage performance tips for each of the acts that performed. The people the Essex musicians wanted to impress were Jimmy Pop Scoop from Pop Scoop Magazine, Director of Sister Productions Claire O’Dwyer, Marc from AT Music Group, Bella Harvey, vocal coach from Camena Music Services and Head of Future Music, Chris Grayston.
Essex’s regional final was rounded off by our guest act Ben McKelvey.

HunnyB – Strong vibrato. Astonishing vocal range. Chorus is strong and you perform it well but the verses are lyrically a little weak, click here for tips on song writing. Needed a change up at some point too as it tended to loop and lost the interest, click here for advice on dynamics.
Miss Sha – Nice little jazz swing twist on the original, would have been great if you grabbed the mic off the stand and really committed to the performance. Lovely huskiness of the voice. Let your vibrato flow more frequently. A natural stage presence.
Sarah Louise – Great passion. Captivating performance. Super vocal, control was excellent. Nice version of the original and glad you took the mic off the stand and used the stage. Hopefully you will look back at the filming and if you observe your facial expressions to convey the emotion could improve, click here for more on facial expression.
Alex James Ellison – Liked that you made the cover your on, click here for more information on performing a creative cover. At times you lost a little vocal control and you would be even better if you worked with a good vocal coach on improving your control and projection, click here for importance of voice training.

Justina – You need to perform as soon as you come on the stage even if your track hasn’t started try and give something. Big song to sing and you performed it a lot better than in sound check. Commit more to the performance, try looking at other artists on YouTube is a great way to pinch some performance tips. Opening your eyes will help to involve the audience more in your performance.
Nadine Dixon – Nice tone to your vocal but could do with having more projection in the tank. Working with a good vocal coach will help you strengthen this, click here for importance of voice training. Performance wise try to use your eyes more and use the stage with more performance.
Reb3illion – You need to figure out a look that makes you unique to every other rapper. Song is decent but it’s a bit repetitive and could do with more lyrics and hooks, click here for tips on writing a chorus. Performance wise needed more click here for tips on using the stage and would have introduced dancers to be visually more on stage.
David Rush – Very passionate performance. Lovely vibrato. We believed the performance from the look in your eye. Fantastic expression just look to use that stage more to make the performance even more enjoyable, click here for more on using the stage.
Love for Lorelei – Nice song but maybe needs more dynamics to give a bit more instant appeal. Performance wise you are looking down too much at your guitar and you really need to convince us with your eyes that you believe in the song. Lovely head voice. Great image. Maybe try and find a guitarist to play for you.
Ellie Jade – Good vocal but it needed more than just singing the cover in the same way as the original, click here for more information on performing a creative cover. You need to convey the emotion in the performance and you needed to give more facial expression, stage performance and use your hands and to generally move more.
James Stokes – Different although quite theatrical in the performance and it could have done with being more natural. Song has potential but it needed more lyrical hooks, click here for tips on writing a chorus. Great individuality/execution of song. Would be cool to see you with a guitar?
Spike Wilde – Song choice wasn’t great for you and made your vocal too thin, click here for the importance of song choice. Nice transition to your original but the original needed a hook and tended to ramble it was only the cover that had a hook, click here for tips on song writing.

Carla Manganiello – Diction was good and vocals in general, just take care with your facial expression as coming across a little harsh too much pain and click here for more on facial expression. Good to see you take the mic off and come to the front of the stage. Would also have benefitted from better dynamics on the overall performance to give more on the chorus and give it a breather before or after.
Tory Oliver – You can sing and perform well but felt a little like you going through the motions of a song you’ve performed numerous times. Song wise it needed more of a hook, it also sounded dated, click here for tips on writing a chorus. Brilliant stage presence. Buckets of confidence in this performance.
Jesamine – Good connection between performers and a cool vibe. Liked the story of the song and you can imagine this on the radio probably not an idea to over repeat the chorus as it borders on it at the moment. Very interactive and enjoyable.
April – Wasn’t enough about the performance to separate it from karaoke, click here for more information on performing a creative cover. Image and performance wise look at acts you aspire to be like and take elements you think you could incorporate into your act.
Jennifer – Enjoyable performance and good confidence on stage. Good song choice but you’ve got to use that stage, click here on using the stage. Need to make us believe the song with your emotion and you aren’t, click here for more on facial expression.
J.D – It needed to be more interesting, click here for advice on dynamics. Try and connect as performers there appeared very little or no engagement between you. Good emotion given to the performance.
Sarah Westfall – Nice lazy vibe to your vocal style. Wanted you to use the stage more, click here on using the stage. Vocally needed a bit more dynamic range. Sung well and with passion but couldn’t quite feel the connection to the song.
Dan Cox – Vocally strong and lovely control, liked you made the song your own, felt like it needed a change up although you did wind it up with good dynamics but lacked that wow factor it could have potentially achieved. Good all round package. Very sellable. Lovely stage presence.
Dee Hunter - Lovely tone and strong playing but it was a little bit cruise ship in the foyer waiting to sit on the captain’s table which is lovely but lacks originality perhaps we are looking for at this stage of an artist career being over 21. Beautiful smooth tones. Very talented.
