Open mic nights took place in Glasgow for the Open Mic UK Glasgow
Open mic nights Glasgow: National singing competition Open Mic UK held its Regional Finals at Carnegie Lecture Theatre .Open Mic UK is more than a competition and if you’d like advice on how to develop as an act then please click here advice for aspiring singers.
The regional finals were judged by music industry specialists who have provided stage performance tips for each of the acts that performed. The people the Glasgow musicians wanted to impress were Gordon Johnstone from Glasswerk Magazine, Angela McCallum from McCallum School of Music, Amanda Hutchinson from Riverside Music Complex, Marc Andrews from Splash Productions and Darran Barker from DB Management.
Glasgow’s Regional Finals were rounded off by our guest act previous winner of TeenStar and current X Factor star Emily Middlemas.

Marli – Really original head voice notes- show them more. Great control of your breath. Love your style. Great performance.
Megan Murphy – When you’re playing the piano you need to look up at the crowd to make a connection. Great voice, work on performance, click here for tips performance. Don’t know if you need the piano.
Olivia Sharkey – You have lovely softer tones- but the belt notes are going into your nose! A vocal coach will be able to help you with this, click here for the importance of voice training. We hear this song so often it makes it difficult for you to stand out, click here for importance of song choice.
Fiona Boyd – Nice work. Could do with working on the style of your singing to give you more of a distinctive voice, click here for the importance of voice training. Nice emotion in your voice.
Craig Laidlaw – A little pitchy at times. Good image. Work on your vocals, moving from octave to octave wasn’t very smooth, click here for the importance of voice training.
Justine Wilson – Very musical theatre tone. Attention to your break area is needed; click here for the importance of voice training. That last note was fantastic!
Nichole White – Good voice. Liked the arrangement of the mash up. It’s quite an emotional mash up so it would have benefitted from some more performance, click here for tips performance. Really confident performer.
Anna Greer – Make sure the guitar is tuned! It was hard to establish a regular rhythm. You have a lovely tone.
Jenna Milroy – Great voice. Connected with the crowd to make a brilliant performance. Lovely vocals. That tone was ridiculous! Goosebumps!
Stephanie McNair – Try to find the light shades in the song. Strong song choice for you. You need to engage with the audience more, click here for tips performance.
Sean McGarvey – Loved this, very unique. Always good to hear an original and you performed well. Could see you fronting a band. Work on softening those head notes, a vocal coach can help with this, click here for the importance of voice training.
Emma McGarrity – Strong alto voice. Try to strengthen those top notes! Liked your image. Enjoyed your singing, looked a little tense.
Bambie – You performed well. Don’t think this is the right song for you, would have liked to hear something more modern and edgy, click here for importance of song choice. Watch you don’t push the vocals out of pitch.
Kristen MacBeth – Did not expect that vocal! Beautiful tone- keep working! Not sure the image and the voice complement each other well- click here for tips on act image.
M.E.G – Loved this. Good guitar and vocals. Good performance got the crowd going. Seems like you brought your fan club along!
Terry Bling and Princyboii – Great energy and rhythms. Work the mic though, click here for microphone techniques. There was good chemistry between you both, but none with the audience, engage with everyone! Bags of confidence on stage, so much energy.

Folk Undecided – Smile! Enjoy the experience. Try to keep that tambourine in time. Liked the band’s name. Need to work on performance, click here for tips performance. The harmonies were lovely, work on your timing!
21 and Overs
Will Leatherbarrow – Original song was good. Look at the audience more, make a connection with them. You had good stage presence. Very catchy song.
Linzi – Great song choice. Work on those top/head notes- strengthen them, click here for the benefits of singing lessons. Good range. Try to use the stage more, a little static, click here for tips on performance.
Steve Kerr – Always good to hear an original song. You’ve got a good guitar ballad here. Good harmonies. Try to connect with the audience more, click here for tips on performance.
Mary McMahon – You have a good vocal. Slight pitch issues- not sure the song showcased your full voice though, click here for the importance of song choice. There were some lovely tones during that performance.
Keir Robinson – Good to have some folk in the competition. Guitar work was well executed. Tone wasn’t consistent; a vocal coach can help with this, click here for the benefits of singing lessons. Very confident performance.
Maria Innes – Unique performance. Loved it all. Clear and good range. Performed well and connected with the audience.
GFB – Great to hear something different! Rap started well but lost its rhythm a little, the second rap had more power! Try not to wander around the stage but instead own it!
James J – Vocals were a little one paced. Committed performance, going forward work on your performance, click here for tips on performance.
Amy Quinn – I love your vintage feel, it complements your vocals. You did well contrasting between quiet and loud. Big voice for a big performance – impressive!
K&H Music – Great song choice. You really engaged with the audience. Best act of the night. It was overall a good performance. I don’t think the act name is right though…
