OPEN MIC NIGHTS LONDON

Open mic nights took place in London for the Open Mic UK London 21 and Overs Regional Finals!

OPEN MIC NIGHTS LONDON

Open mic nights London: National singing competition Open Mic UK held its Regional Finals at The Beck Theatre, London this weekend and saw London’s best singers, songwriters and solo artists take to the stage in their bids to impress a music industry judging panel and capacity crowd.

The people the London musicians wanted to impress were Drive time presenter Westside FM Peter Slenett, WS Music’s Winston Sela, vocal tutor Lee Webster, Dominique Pizzinat from The School of Rhythm, vocal coach from The Voice Jay, Zydre Sicher from Artistic Me, representatives of Samurai Sound and international music examiner Stuart Slater. London’s regional final was rounded off by our guest act Ben McKelvey.

Sam White – Vocally you settled, I liked the attention to diction and dynamics shape within phrases. The contrasted up tempo part worked for you and the audience – well done here. A good opening act.

Artemis - Good coverage of stage – liked the stylistic difference between the two vocal parts. Now try to increase the connection between the two voices. Needs a little more work, perhaps also a common theme in identity also. Watch your mic control, click here for tips on microphone technique.

Laura Granderath – Secure performance, good technical experience to organize guitar balance initially. Needs a commercial edge to compete with more polished acts. Seems to me there is an element of trying too hard to connect – give more focus on the overall package and try to be more relaxed on stage, click here for stage presence.

Rommel Balacanao – You captured the mood, and did well to sustain interest in the slower sparser context. Vocally you need to work on tone control and overall support of longer durations, (sorry!), but this was exposed even more in the style you have chosen. Clearly heartfelt.

Open Mic Nights London - feedback

Jacob March– A good story, performed with a touch of emotion. You to now give thought to how you present this work. It will be difficult to move to the next level without attention to image, mic technique and stage craft. Don’t lose the raw qualities you have. Click here for tips on image and click here for tips on microphone technique.

Heaven – Nice voice / tone, with considered material and some expression. Watch support and technique (projection was thin in places) Not sure all the ornamental gymnastics were necessary and this did affect exactness of pitching in places. Keep working on vocal confidence, click here for tips on building vocal confidence. Attention image needed (sorry).

Cleo – Vocally smooth, considered and interesting. Great guitar support. Remember the supporting musician is still part of the act and needs to be presented in a considered way – this did detract. Click here for tips on duos and groups.

Priya – You have confidence, stage presence and vocals are bright. It is veering on the karaoke side of things which could be quite easily fixed with better quality backing, perhaps supporting musicians, and less ‘pub poppy’ in material and performance. I can however see commercial promise here.

Sonny Saint Madden – Honest, pure, and well presented. You have found your style, capturing a vulnerability. Numerous plosive consonants detracted (you can get away with the odd one) and guitar melody became a little monotonous, but this aside, a stronger, if not raw, act. Take some advice on image and how to present your work.

Nayana Santana – London met New York. Great contrasting styles. Both parts were able to maintain interest when not singing. Strong act. Good stage presence.

Luke Edney – Secure and honest in delivery and lyric. An established performer, with some commercial promise in your genre. You do need to polish the rough diamond to compete on the bigger stage.

Anton – Try to take the stage with greater confidence and engagement Anton. You nearly took the advantage but spoken introduction was tentative. Rapping was good, but choosing the word ‘party’ needs very good mic technique to avoid frequent plosives, click here for tips on microphone technique.

Open Mic Nights London - feedback

Tom Livingstone – Liked it. You need an edge in this style, and attention to image. There is a lot of competition in this genre, and this was a good attempt. Vocally secure, Pleasant image. Still need to find an edge to go further though. Maybe a band?

Beth Keeping – Being yourself works for you.  Pleasant, relaxed, enjoyable. Well done.  Good material choice.

ShadyKJV  - Confident, performer and held the stage well. Will be unlucky not to go through.

Denz – Female part is great. Not sure what the male part added until the rap. Might be worth the parts separating, or being supplemented with more muicians to be less exposed. The piece needed to contrast / vary more as it progressed. Something there but needs re-working.

Miss Soul – Your act name reflected the performance and style! Passionate also. The delivery did become a little too complicated for me, especially when your voice is strong enough to stay simpler – became a bit too busy. Still a top half act though.

Lady D –You spilt the judges today - The feeling is you need develop an edge musically and stylistically, and then let’s see you again. Much promise…. Great attention to image.

Christopher – Not sure about the flow of the original and the exactness of pitching in the intervallic leaps. Timing not always quite sync’d either. Like the vocal tone – keep working on the material and technical accuracy. A vocal coach will be able to help with this, click here for the importance of voice training.

Joe-Peezy –Engaging spoken introduction which did capture the audience, and the piece was interesting. Confident, believable performance too, holding pace and projection as you tired. Well done here. You do need a much better transition.

Bradley Cook – Really like the consideration to image, dynamic contrast, individual tone and overall personalization. A performer here, with a measured approach to material selection. Well done.

A S Jay - The vocals were a little shakey and weak in places click here for the importance of voice training. The rapper was a bit stale and out of time and so you didn't compliment each other throughout the performance. Look to rehearse together as much as possible to get the timing bang on.
