Portsmouth’s Regional Finals were rounded off by our guest act Folk/Indie band Speak, Brother.

Joe Waller – Interesting guitar part. Silky vocals and a decent song. Try and make the hook work better by really changing the dynamics and projection to give more emphasis to it, click here for advice on dynamics and click here for tips on improving projection. Don’t be afraid to show your personality in your performance.
Charlie Child – Sultry image. Good vocally but missing the start point of your vocal twice gave such an unprofessional start. Need to practice and practice so it can’t happen. It was a good performance once you got going, make sure you connect with your audience more, click here for tips on performance.
Sarah Batt – Great performer. Nicely sung but needed an injection of originality, click here for tips on making a song your own. Used the stage and performed well. Backing vocals were too loud in the backing track. Song choice was a dated one, click here for importance of song choice.
Callum Stock – Fantastic vocal and guitar support, giving a blend that really worked! Facial expressions really helped us connect us to you and the conveying of the song. Click here for the importance of facial expression. It sometimes wasn’t clear whether you were a soloist or part of a duo. Would love to hear that unusual sound on some original material.
Anita – Big powerful voice with great tone. Decent song, need to commit more to the performance it was a little lacklustre. More performance will build your confidence to commit more, click here for open mic nights. Try to get your image to match up with the voice to make you look more distinctive.
Iain Scott – Gorgeous voice. A great performance. Really good song and good delivery a bit like Ronan Keating meets David Gray which can’t be bad! Could listen to a lot more of this.
Lara Howard – Good vocally but very theatrical which doesn’t demonstrate much originality. Click here on the importance of song choice and think about how you can make the cover as original as possible, click here for tips on performing a creative cover.
Sean Parker – Very impressive, love the act. Good confidence to get the audience involved but always a risky business, click here for audience participation. Guitar playing was very solid. Your eye contact could have been better to engage with your audience.
Roxanne Phillips – An unusual act which is a good thing, stay that way. Sweet voice. Song could have flowed better it could have been structured better. Click here to read a bit more on song writing.
Coral – Lovely image. Very confident stage presence. Sung throughout with a smile on your face, this was engaging and helped us connect with your performance. Vocally you had a really good control. Song did not reflect your voice to its full ability, click here for the importance of song choice. Would love to hear some original material!
Open Mic Nights Portsmouth - Feedback continued
Emily-Jayne Bowen – You have a lovely husky vocal, not sure the ukulele was the right backing instrument, it was a bit thin and the songs are quite powerful ones and it was a little against the grain of that. It was wise to avoid the high notes, but it slightly took away the climax of the song. Maybe next time choose a different song, click here for the importance of song choice.
Sophie Chandler – Liked the props great shout, should have got them involved in the routine. Performance lacked energy and commitment. You can look to improve on your mic control which in turn would help your projection, click here for tips on mic control and click here for ways to improve projection. More confidence should help improve both matters but also working with a good vocal coach will make you even better with your projection in particular.
Darren Rampton – Key work was decent, would suggest looking to work on your facial expressions and performance to convey the emotion of the song better, click here for the importance of facial expression. Filming yourself and looking back to see how you can look to improve so we can connect to the emotion you want to project.
Michelle – A committed well thought out performance, good use of the stage. Look to improve your mic control which was poor, always look to keep the mic a cm away from your mouth at all times, click here for tips on mic control. A good vocal coach can help with your projection and tuning to be even better, click here for importance of voice training.
Ben Sweeney – Performed well with your eyes, performance would have benefitted from wider dynamics and a breather or a change in delivery from pushing the chorus lines, click here for advice on dynamics.
Stepping Stones – It was a little too casual and needed more commitment. You need to try and connect with each other and perform as an act. Vocally it was a too low, a good vocal coach will help assist with your projection and tuning; click here for the benefits of having vocal lessons. You can hear the talent in the song writing.
Paige Anderson – Impressive start faded a little, was a very big song to pick, click here for the importance of song choice. Good to see you dressed appropriately for the song.
Jo Carson – Really made the song your own, try and keep focused throughout as you lost your way a little at one point. You have a great voice; make sure you use it earlier you only have a few minutes to impress.
Sammy P – Classy image. Liked the flip into an alternative language, it worked really well. Needed to commit more to the chorus and really climb into that vocally. A good vocal coach will be able to assist you with extending your range and improving your projection to be even better, click here for importance of voice training.
Catherine Jones - Bit of a crooky start and on the higher notes did you warm up fully? Click here for the importance of warming up. Work on your facial expressions to convey the emotion in the song, click here for more on facial expression. Song is decent and key work is a real strength.
