 Portsmouth Stage Performance Tips

Portsmouth stage performance tips: National singing competition Open Mic UK held its Regional Finals at Ferneham Hall, Portsmouth this weekend and saw Portsmouth’s best singers, songwriters and solo artists take to the stage in their bids to impress a music industry judging panel and capacity crowd.

The regional finals were judged by music industry specialists who have provided stage performance tips for each of the acts that performed. The people the Portsmouth musicians wanted to impress were Gloria Miller from Gloria Miller Ents, Luke English a music industry lawyer, international singer Rosalind Fountain, open mic promoter Marcus Jones, River Studios’ Gareth Henderson and head of Future Music, Chris Grayston.

Portsmouth’s Regional Finals were rounded off by our guest act Folk/Indie band Speak, Brother.

Cali – Well done for singing an original. Lovely whispery tones. Certainly finding her own sound and the key work is improving all the time. Just look to commit more to the performance and look to give more facial expression, click here for tips on facial expression. It’s also important to remember to connect with the audience.

Hanna Doswell – What a raw talent, such passion, take care with your diction, click here for tips on diction. Great range. It sounded really weird with your phrasing for the bridge (123 check) but you nailed the chorus! Performance wise look to work the stage as you were rooted to the spot, click here for stage performance tips.

Brandon Lebbie – Lots of potential here, need to work on improving your stage presence and improve your performance, click here for tips on performance. Use your facial expressions to convey the emotion, click here for singing with emotion. Good song choice which you sung well but think dynamics to give the performance even more range, click here for advice on dynamics. Liked that you were creative and made the ending your own.

Lauren Spencer – Beautiful voice. Nice tone but your control on sustaining the notes needs to be improved. A good vocal coach will be able to assist you with this to be even better, click here on how best to select a singing teacher. Good you slowed it down but would have been good to use dynamics, click here for advice on dynamics. Don’t just sing the voice, feel it, click here for singing with emotion.

Just Saying – Really nice harmonies. There were some really great moments in the performance. Work well together, was a little annoying with the accent and over phrasing of the words. Remember to be exactly who you are.  Facial expression was spot on to convey the emotion in the song.

Zoe T – Liked the song choice. Nice moody entrance to set the scene. Confident performance. Vocally you have a mature voice and you have all the right ideas on performance just commit a little more to them. Mic control could be improved, click here for mic techniques. Take care to give attention to every word and not just the chorus.  Lots of potential just need to pull it altogether that little notch.

Beth – Nice confident guitar playing. Take care with your control and mic control as it affected your volume, click here for mic techniques. Work on improving your vocal range, which a good vocal coach will be able to assist you with to be even better, click here for importance of voice training. Try to show your personality with more facial expression.

Tallulah Tilt – Amazing controlled vocals. Great stage presence. Think we have a diva in the making here. Lots of potential here with a big vocal, click here for the importance of song choice as it was a little dated although you did a big song justice it probably restricted your ability to express yourself.

Tillie & Heather – Think you could have made more of the opportunity to harmonise and layer up the vocals. Performance wise good to see you use the stage but try and make it a little more natural. Use your faces to express the emotion in the song. A few little glances to each other would as a duo help show a better connection on stage, click here for tips on duos or groups.

Calvin Glen – Strong vocals. Your performances are getting stronger; song doesn’t flow into a chorus as well as it could and really look to project that hook line to emphasis. So dynamics and projection can help the song flow better rather than sometimes come across as a bit of a ramble, click here for advice on dynamics and click here for ways to improve projection.

SJay – Really nice image, it suited your performance. Good to see you convey and perform the song but it can come across a little mechanical, so try and work on coming across more natural. Vocally you are improving but watch your control and avoid being shouty, click here for ways to improve your projection.

Anna – Think we’ve got a star in the making here. Lovely tone to your vocal and expression in your voice. Try and not look down at the keys too much and use your eyes and facial expression more, which did improve as the performance went on. Try to bring the personality out in your performance.

Laila Angeline – Vocally really good, try and bring the performance alive with more expression and dynamics to the performance, click here for advice on dynamics. Looked very nervous and awkward at times, more performance will build this confidence to commit more to the performance, click here tips on building stage confidence.

Charlie Woodford – You’ve got a great stage presence, a real crowd pleaser. Good guitar work and delivery. You worked the dynamics well but it did loop which could have be avoided by changing the structure of the song around, click here for tips on writing songs

Eden – You have a lovely vocal but commit to the performance, you are telling the story and having to convey the emotion of that song; look to connect to the song to be able to bring that to your next performance. Try to move around during your performance rather than staying still, click here for tips on performance.

Katelin Troy – Crazy to think you’re only 10 years old. Fantastic prospect going forward, take care to pick the rights songs click here on the importance of song choice and how to do a creative cover.  Good to see you use your hands, also look to work that stage. Keep developing what you already have and you’ll be one to look out for.

Alex Higgins – Great look. Limited as a guitarist but look to perform more; use any appropriate trick like changing the angle of your head and relevant facial expressions. Not song about the song choice, but you seemed to work well with it, click here for the importance of song choice. Work on your confidence on stage as it will help to improve your performance, click here for tips on building stage confidence.

Imy – Well done for doing an original song. Loads of potential. Remember to perform throughout even more so in the instrumental sections, click here for tips on performing. Vocally you have a sharp clarity and diction.

Florence –Good image. Sung it well although watch your timing. Song choice wasn’t strong, so difficult to put your own stamp on it and/or be as good as the original which is so fresh in our minds, click here for the importance of song choice. You need to gain some experience, maybe go to a few open mic nights to get some real stage experience, click here for open mic night advice.

Harmonise – Well done, great harmonies! Nice to hear an original performance of a song. You look a little stiff on stage, try to make it more of a performance, click here for tips on performance. The image really works for you.

Freddy Harvey – There’s a good message to this song. Decent song which with a change in delivery, projection and dynamics could be a really good song, click here for advice on dynamics. Look to strengthen your vocals with a vocal coach who can assist you with extending your range and power, click here for importance of voice training.

Suzanne Poole – Lovely tone, control and clarity to your vocal, don’t be frightened to commit more to the performance and use your body to convey the emotion even more, click here for tips on performance. Song choice suited your vocal but difficult to put your own stamp on such a classic, click here for the importance of song choice.

Keighley Smith – Worked the stage well, nerves came through on the vocals which you will need to learn to control which more performance will help build this confidence, click here for tips on building stage confidence. The song seemed a little too big for your vocal; click here for the importance of song choice.
