Reading singers wanted to impress: National singing competition Open Mic UK held auditions at Sub89 this weekend in a search for the region’s best singers, singer-songwriters, rappers and vocalists. The Reading singers wanted to impress, as with a place in the Open Mic UK 2014 Regional Finals up for grabs, the acts that auditioned had a lot to play for!
The Reading auditions were judged by music industry specialists who have provided music industry feedback for a selection of acts. The people the Reading singers wanted to impress were Louis Sellars from Anton Road Studios, vocal coach, Jemma Willard and Head of Future Music, Chris Grayston.

Megan Ridgeway – Good engagement and guitar work. Liked the song choice; click here for more information on making the cover creative and original.
Katie Da Silva – Strong vocals. Nice control and diction.
Pauline – Super tone and control. Emotional performance with natural vocals.
Sabah Saghir – Confident performance. Watch your diction and control as you have the power, click here to see how you can improve your diction.
Keely Kimber – Good eye contact and engagement with your audience and great that you are doing your own song. Look to work on developing your projection to be even better.
Jade Allum – Vocally good, nice control and the audition got better and better as it went on.
Nathan Carpenter – A good vocal coach will be able to assist you with improving your tone, projection and range, click here for the importance of singing lessons.
Mary Williams – Really original performance, nice country twang to it. Work on your tone and your depth to take your performance to the next level.
Cihan Wiltshire – Better dynamics and projection would bring the performance to another level and make you even better. Always keep going otherwise you just highlight any errors.
Ethan Morgan – Confident performance. Great projection, perhaps look to get the guitar more involved to drive the performance.
Bethany Barlow – Vocally nice but the performance lacked expression to bring us the emotion in the song, click here for tips on singing with emotion. Better engagement with the audience will help us to connect with you also, hope that helps.
Reading singers wanted – feedback continued
Charlotte Lloyd Butler – Nice tone and connection emotionally to the song which you conveyed nicely. Don’t be scared to project your vocal more.
Natalie Mac – Good commitment to the performance please take care not to push it and lose control. Also look to work the lighter, low notes to give greater dynamics and emphasis to the chorus.
Luke Newbold – Don’t forget to look up and engage with your audience more. Also it’s important to try and pick a less popular song for your performance to avoid having to stand up from all other performances of that song, click here for the importance of song choice.
Jenny Pudney - Your lack of projection really spoilt this performance because it did sound like the song had potential. Find a good vocal coach to work with to improve this and help develop you vocally, click here for the benefits of singing lessons.
Abby Jade – Projection of your vocal could have been stronger so look to work on that going forward along with engaging the audience more.
Sarah Messer – Vocally good but keep focused and express the emotion in the song which you aren’t doing enough at the moment.
Ollie Wade – Nice tone vocally but your projection could be worked on along with the dynamic delivery of the song to really bring the chorus.
Joe Holley – Good clear projection and diction. Don’t be frightened to get those hands and body involved in the performance, click here for tips on performing visually.
Aoife Gumbs – Expansive range and good stage presence. Don’t forget to engage with the audience and use your eyes to connect the songs emotion.
Amy Hughes – Guitar work was good and vocally nice but the performance was lifeless you didn’t look up and it couldn’t have been anymore lifeless as a performance. You need to film yourself and work on it as you are letting yourself down and you are better than that!
Bethany Hughes – Song choice is so important and the song was just too big for you and you have a good vocal so pick so it shows off the nicer tones in your vocal range. Click here for the importance of song choice.
Angel – Love your image and look but take care to pick the correct song choice, click here for the importance of song choice. Commit more to the performance and emotion in the song.
Drew Wedlake – A quality audition, good image and lovely tone to a well-rehearsed audition.
Chelsea Farr – Need to be better rehearsed so you can concentrate on your performance rather than looking at the words.
Reading singers wanted – feedback continued
21 and over
Portia Harry – Amazing range. Really strong projection, think about making the covers as creative as possible to show as much of you as possible, click here for performing a creative cover.
J.Carby – Good connection to the music, try and make the performance as original as possible.
Terry Carr – Sensitive performance. The song is very emotional and perhaps a bit too personal and sad to be a single but never the less it has potential.
Schizzella Rose –Confident vocal. Work that dynamic both with the performance and vocally to really emphasis the hooks. Never stop as we would have never have known.
Mark Webb – Never stop always keep going! Work on your confidence.
Emma Moult – Nice vocals but try and work on connecting with the emotion of the song better.
Lauren Dunnett – Super vocals, look to match up your image to the song; the mini skirt and tattoos seem to give different messages, click here for synchronising the image.
OSP – Good connection and engagement between performers. A very cool performance. Being picky look to work the dynamics to really drive through sections you want to emphasise.
Matt Merry - Nice song lots of potential, really look to belt out that chorus.
Reading singers wanted – feedback continued
Benjamin Law – Seriously cool version, don’t ever stop, keep going we would never have known. It was nice to different instrument with a different performance.
Ciara Vizzard – Lovely delivery and liked the lyrics really engaging. Where you could improve though is to film yourself and look at how you are expressing the emotion of the song.
BPO – Performance is a little odd so maybe look to film it and see what you are doing and commit to the performance more.
Rob Estcourt – It’s a bit exhausting and perhaps look to rework the dynamics to deliver the maximum when you need to rather than all the way through. Would be nice to hear you sing as well as rap.
Nicolette Street – Vocally really good, perhaps if you could work on the performance and expression facially to be even better, click here for tips on singing with facial expression. Don’t be frightened to use your hands more. A few glances across to the guitarist could show chemistry between performers.
Oscar Coria - Good projection but the diction could be better, click here for advice on improving your diction. Watch the breathing to get the best on the high notes.
Chris Loveridge – Melodic performance. Nice song, just try and engage more with us; more eye contact please.
Yasmin Kabir – You have a powerful vocal but control is going to be your thing so look to find a vocal coach to assist you with this, click here to see the benefits of a vocal coach.
Mike Richardson – Made an immediate impression. Remember to engage with your audience. Key work was impressive on the whole just need to tidy it up in places and drive through that chorus perhaps have it earlier in the song?
