Reading stage performance tips:  At Open Mic UK we provide music industry feedback to all acts that perform in our shows. Below is feedback for acts from the Reading Music contest that took place at Sub89, Reading. Open Mic UK is more than a competition and if you’d like advice on how to develop as an act then please click here advice for aspiring singers

The regional finals were judged by music industry specialists who have provided stage performance tips for each of the acts that performed. The people the Reading musicians wanted to impress were Kiki Militis a professional singer/songwriter previously of ICMP, Louis Sellers from Anton Road Studio, producer of Britain Does Variety, John Hayden and development manager at Future Music, David Payne. 

Reading’s Regional Finals were rounded off by our guest act, singer/songwriter Ben McKelvey.

Reading stage performance tips: Find industry feedback below. Please be aware views expressed by judges are opinions and subjective to that particular judging panel. Jack & Harvey – Fluid guitar technique. Loving the main vocal. Work on developing stage presence and engaging with the audience, click here for tips on stage presence. Bringing more emotion to the performance would help; click here for singing with emotion.

Jessie Hall – Don’t stand still for too long, it doesn’t help to engage with the audience well, click here for tips on performance. There’s real potential here, working on your vocal control, this is something a vocal coach will be able to help with, click here for the importance of voice training.

Tiegan Chadwick – Good image and lovely tone. Relax more into the performance and be more mindful of the dynamics working, click here on ideas to improve your dynamics. Very brave to sing acappella. You’ve got a nice, rich tone which filled the venue. 

Shika – Evocative performance and a confident aura. Your rhythm and pitch was consistently positive. Impressive genuine delivery. Good stage presence. Unfortunately we hear this song a lot so it’s difficult to stand out, click here for importance of song choice.

Lauren Baker – Nice tone and good image. Work on connecting more with the song for a more authentic delivery,  click here for singing with emotion. Well done for using the stage and remaining focussed.

Reading stage performance tips

Kitan Tinker – Quite liked your song choice- we don’t hear it often! Try to work on adding body and warmth to your vocal tone. Relax more into the performance.

Kira – Well done for playing an original track. You’ve worked hard on the lyrics and the melody. Good stage presence. 

Robbie Owens – Very impressive vocal control and tone especially in low and high end. Would just like to see you relax more into the song. Your commitment to the track was exceptional. Don’t be afraid to smile! 

Gemma Hill – Good controlled vocal and good delivery. Try to look at audience more, click here for tips on performance. Nice image. A controlled performance, you obviously rehearsed hard.

Mya Boyd – A good display of guitar skills- don’t be afraid to play louder! Your focus was on the singing and it sounded beautiful. Love how you got into the song and engaged with the audience.

Coral Mae – Creative mix up- energetic delivery. Raunchy guitar playing which was pumping! However make sure your vocal doesn’t suffer as a result.

Elena Cosby – Dynamic performance. Engaged well with the song. Good control, work on your microphone technique, click here for microphone techniques. You shifted your energy at all the right moments. 

Valine & Saline – Good harmonies but the dynamic need more focus, click here on ideas to improve your dynamics. Remember to come together as individuals so we can feel the connection!

Heather – Captivating voice. Engaging performance throughout. Loads of character and individuality to this performance. Vocals were hauntingly strong. The dynamics were appropriate and it was delivered in an efficient way.

Madison Byrne – Engaged well with the song. Good vocal control. Your song choice was different, yet ambitious and you kept up with it all the way! Keep on working towards warming up your vocal tone- richness will add much more.

Reading stage performance tips

Louisa Friend – Good image on stage. You performed very well but it needed more personality to it, click here for singing with emotion.

Hollie Thubron – Fluid and genuine delivery. Very enjoyable performance. A quirky and memorable original song with enough to keep us engaged. Improving your breath control will help you get further!

Polly Boyles – You engaged well with the audience for a good performance. Remember recycling the same guitar chords can be predictable, try to mix it up!

Sophie Elise – Plenty of emotion, character and cheekiness in this performance. Great use of the stage and physical gesture. The pitch was awesome for a 9 year old! Really mature performance.

Lauren Carter – Lovely tone and delivery. Fluid vocals with good control. It felt like the performance was a journey and it was an enjoyable ride! 

Vicki Sayers – Good tone. Work on your dynamic variance, click here on ideas to improve your dynamics. Great rhythm with your guitar playing. Your singing was clear. Try adding a touch of brightness for more effort. 

Harry Cracknell – Distinct vocals with good control. Great potential. A lovely breath vocal tone- it’s unique. Your expression showed belief in your abilities, which pleased us. Add a pinch more diction to the words, click here for advice on diction. 

Rosie Flower – A mature voice for your age, very listenable. Your piano playing didn’t hinder your vocals which was impressive. Very smooth, controlled an emotion. Expressive voice with many dimensions. 

Manya – Came on with lots of confidence. Work on working the stage more comfortably, click here for tips on performance

Meghna Rajesh Nair – Make a great deal of effort in your image, good job. Unfortunately you sang out of key on the choruses- it was flat. Remember to sing higher on them! Nice tone.

Carla – Powerful grouding voice. Unique and refreshing. A rich, full bodied vocal tone- highly mature for your age. Please show more facial expression in your performance, click here for tips on facial expression.
