SHEFFIELD MUSIC OPPORTUNITIES

Singers and songwriters came to impress at a show for Sheffield music opportunities at The Sheffield City Hall

   

Sheffield Music Opportunities: Open Mic UK gave budding singers Sheffield music opportunities at the weekend. The singers and songwriters came to perform in front of industry judges in the hopes of getting through the Sheffield music opportunities and onto the next round of the competition. 

The judging panel at the Sheffield music opportunities were;

  • Darran Barker – DB Management
  • Paul Beetham – Professional Musician and Executive Director of Rhythm of your choice
  • Karen Beetham – Owner of Rhythm of your choice – the entertainment specialists
  • Beckie Oldham – Vocal coach
  • James Williams – Midlands Academy of Musical Theatre
  • Rupert (plus 2 guests) – Cornucopia festival

Julia Aldred - You have a really lovely voice. Try to keep eye contact with the audience throughout your performance, as this will be more engaging for them. Eye contact is a key method of communicating emotion. Click here for tips on eye contact

Holly - You have a nice voice with lots of potential! Try and move to the beat more, this will make your performance a little less awkward. Using the stage will also be far more engaging for your audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers

Beth Nixon - Very confident start, nice clear vocals, and a good original song. Loved the guitar playing. Clean tone, good songwriting ability. Consider dynamics to add light and shade to performance. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Good vocal range, look at exploring vocal flair with technical elements such as: Inflections/ Vibrato. 

Ashleigh Hutchinson - Potential with good flexibility and control on mix register. Consider stage presence and interaction with audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Listen to the music as you were slightly out of sync at times -consider phrasing. Be sure to make eye contact with your audience, as this is engaging for them. Click here for tips on eye contact.

Beth Barlow - Your image was nice! Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. Your song choice was great for your vocals, click here for the importance of song choices. Great range control - well done. 

Mitchy Chambers - A confident performance. Great song choice, vocal range and tone. Your voice is very compressed/ singing with a tight throat, which can lead to vocal injury (seek technical training). Although you had good awareness of vocal flare and dynamics. Clef - Nice original song. You were very confident. I love the blue hour! Good communication between instrumentalists. Look at exploring vocal range, adding dynamics and vocal flare. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics

Peter Hardy - I loved the chilled out original song. Clear and distinctive tone, good control of vocal and song writing ability. Click here for tips on how to write songs. You should have more confidence in the delivery. Great use of grit and distortion on the bridge- use that more.  

Melody Joy - Nice vocals, you have a very quirky sound. I think your song choice was a little dated but you had a very distinctive tone. You should consider exploring the country genre! Click here for the importance of song choices. You had good vocal control and use of vibrato, and the powerful notes were executed with confidence. You should open your mouth to fully exaggerate vowel sounds. 

GD - Consider dynamics – click here for tips on vocal dynamics. There wasn’t much room to grow as we started too loud/ powerful. Very confident vocal, clear vocal quality; explore mixed register and higher/ falsetto. Good instrumentalist! 

Jamie Connolly - As a performer when your doing your own original song you should know it to the point of not having to ask to start again. Great range, be sure to work on diction. Click here for tips on how to improve diction. Good use of twang and vibrato on higher registers. Consider using more ad-libs to fill instrumentals. Control needed on vibrato at times. 

Lettisha Polores - This to me was a beautiful performance, very soulful. Think about timing, as your vocals were slightly rushed. Add vocal flair and work on projection and stage presence. There was no eye contact with audience on the build the vocals remained the same- work on dynamics. Click here for tips on eye contact and vocal dynamics.  

Dave Santana - Love the rough vocal, good control, and use of stage. Good distinction and grit to create unique vocal quality. You have a confident delivery; think about dynamics to emphasize a build in the song, the volume stayed the same throughout. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics

Stevey T - Nice to see something different! This will set you aside from other artists. I think you need to work on your delivery. Click here for vocal exercises for singers.

Lowri Dennis - Nice song choice! Have more confidence and give your audience more eye contact. Click here for tips on eye contact. Good pitching and control over vibrato and vocal placement. Occasionally vibrato effects pitching. Ensure to keep an open throat to avoid any tension on vocal chords. 

Jordan - Nice vocal tone, clean, strong vocal quality. Attempt to find own unique sound, as you appear to be imitating established artists. Explore riffs, ad-libs and melisma. Have more confidence on stage. You looked nervous, you shouldn’t be! Click here for tips on how to calm nerves. Well done. 

Fabio - Cool image, you performed with lots of passion but were pitchy at times. You need to work on diction and vowel sounds. Click here for tips on how to improve diction. Good tone, but there was a lot of tension/ contradictions on the higher notes. Relax and open your mouth to achieve clearer sound. General good control, power and breathing technique.   

Katya Davis - You were very nervous, you need to work on your nerves for your performance. Click here for tips on how to calm nerves. Breathy, vocal quality good attempt of making this cover original. Good lower tones – have more confidants. Explore higher register, dynamics, ad- libs and vocal flair to make performance unique. Sophie Smith - Nice cover done, and well executed. Good vocal range, delivery, and transition from chest to head voice. Lovely tone and vocal range. Great control but be careful not to strain on higher registers consider using melisma, ad-libs and image. Click here for tips on how to achieve better vocal projection

Harry Middleton - Cool vocals, very rough – we could see you doing more rocky stuff. The song choice was good. You had a lovely low distorted tone, but open vowel sounds and think about your diction. Click here for tips on how to improve diction. Think about your performance/emotion, but overall great individual flair and good use of dynamics. Click here for tips on how to sing with emotion

Stefano Corona - WOW! Brilliant! One to watch out for. You had a distinctive tone, great use of twang to control pitches. Click here for vocal exercises for singers. Great use of phrasing on acapella section. You were very aware of vocal flair and performance. 

Charmaine C - Love the image, great original. Love your husky vocal tone. Great control and delivery, but your song choice doesn’t show full potential. Click here for the importance of song choices. Good pitching look at adding unique vocal flair such as: dynamics, melisma and riffs.  

Noel Stevens - You have a great bluesy tone. Add dynamic build to emphasize performance. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Overall good stage presence, consider vocal technical elements.    

Cole LC - You had a good tone but work on projection and dynamics. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. You have a good vocal range, loved the melody of the track! Although you lost lyrics due to diction. Click here for tips on how to improve diction.

SHEFFIELD MUSIC OPPORTUNITIES

All singers and songwriters successful through the Sheffield music opportunities progressed onto the next stage of the competition at the North East Area Final which will be held at Dewsbury Town Hall on Sunday 3rd December
