SOUTH WEST AND MIDLANDS SINGING COMPETITION     

South West and Midlands Singing Competition: Music industry judges gave singers feedback at the South West and Midlands Singing Competition at The NEC in Birmingham this weekend. The South West and Midlands Singing Competition gave singers and songwriters the opportunity to gain a place at the Grand Final of Open Mic UK.

The music industry judges at the South West and Midlands Singing Competition included:

  • Chris Grayston, Head Judge; Music Consultant Chris Grayston who works for Sony, Thames TV, The Voice to name a few.
  • Andy Baker, Founder of Resound Media, home of Sound Consultancy and Rocket Fuel. He's responsible for getting many new artists on national radio and has landed unsigned acts on tours with Little Mix, Leona Lewis and Lionel Richie.
  • Ray Meadham, Music Manager and owner of Igig.tv

South West and Midlands Singing Competition - Under 16’s Feedback

Elle W –  Strong sound on the guitar and an angelic vocal. Learn to cope with the nerves, click here for more tips on how to calm nerves. Practice and practice to breed confidence not just until you get it right but so you just can’t get it wrong. Perform on stage as much as you can to also gain more confidence as you have so much potential. Great vocal tone. Well recovered after the hiccup, always looks professional when you carry on. 

Alex Hvass – Watch your mic control you were miles from the mic, click here for more on microphone techniques. Decent original but it took a while to get going, look to edit the intro so there’s more impact at the start, click here for more on writing that killer song chorus.  You looked very nervous in the eyes so try to remain composed and learn to express the emotion in the song in your eyes and expression. You gave a soulful delivery! Get a Songwriting mentor to take it further.

Coco – You picked a very sensitive song to cover but you got into the part and gave an emotional performance. You worked the stage well. Just consider going forward making the cover as creative and your own as possible, click here for performing a creative cover as a singer. At times you gave goose bumps on the high notes! A super performance. Need to see some real emotion, as it’s definitely there trying to break through, click here for how to sing with emotion. Would love to hear your voice with an original song. 

Alisha – You have a good turn of projection to call upon, just don’t sacrifice clarity and control for power, click here for tips on how to achieve better vocal projection. If you click here you will have some tips on microphone techniques. Hold back on the performance to give more impact at the right times. Good breath control on the long notes. It’s worth working on your musical experience, perhaps at open mic nights to build confidence. 

Shiraz - Playing the guitar gives your performance a live feel. The performance and song choice was sensitive but ensure you try and connect the emotions in the song to your audience with better expression, click here for more on how to sing with emotion and singing with facial expressions. Didn’t expect that voice! Try not to look down at your guitar whilst playing, performance experience will help you build the confidence to help this.  

Liam Price – Song choice wasn’t the best, click here for more on song choices and why it’s so important. It’s a very popular song choice which we’ve heard many times. Having said that you sung it with super control and sensitivity! Look to work on your performance to make use of the stage as much as you can which you did towards the end to give a strong dynamic finish! Click here for stage performance tips for singers. You’re such a good character and have a winning smile to match. You have a natural presence which is a great asset. It would be amazing to hear an original song sung that well. 

Wolfy Rider – Very talented girl, take care to write songs that really show off the sweeter tones of your vocal. You created a nice moody vibe from the song but it was difficult to latch on to the message and lyrical hook of the song. Bags of potential so look write and perform as much as you can to find your own unique sound. The keyboard is good, just need to become so confident you don’t look at it, click here for tips on performing with music keyboards. Try and give us more expression in the performance which will hopefully come in time. You’re like an 80’s Kate Bush! Your individuality shone through. 

Caitlin Mae Nedahl – A lively song choice and you tried well to perform but you needed to commit even more to the performance as you had all the moves but lacked the conviction, click here for stage performance tips for singers. Going forward try and be creative with the cover to make it your own click here for more on performing a creative cover as a singer. Vocally you have good projection but take care not to force the vocal. The song choice was a little outdated, click here for tip on song choices. You’ve got buckets of potential, work with a team to help take you forward. 

Saloni – Not sure this song best suited the sweeter tone of your vocal, click here for the importance of song choices. Performance wise look to really practice and perform your expression so on point, click here for more on singing with facial expressions. Great eye contact throughout the performance. The lower notes forced your vocal range, make sure you consider this when selecting a song. 

Elle-Kay Doyle – When performing try and absorb yourself in the emotion in the song and try and connect us to that. Your performance lacked the expression, body movement and stage craft to convey the emotion, look to work on developing that click here for more on singing with facial expressions and click here for more on tips on stage performance tips for singers. You chose a really unique song to say, you just need to believe in it. 

Saskia – What a terrific performance, only slight criticism is to vary the performance a little so not repeating the same moves. You have totally absorbed yourself in the performance and you have a quirky image to go with it. As performers on stage try and reach out to each other a little glance or smile to show connection. Click here for tips on singing in a group. A theatrical performance which suited the mood of the song. The guitar intro felt a little too long. 

Eva Holmes – You have a very mature vocal but it felt like a performance that lacked confidence to use the stage and connect to your audience even more. More performance will develop your stage craft and look to work on bringing more dynamics to the vocal and performance. You failed to move and express the song as you needed to! Ellie Ingleby – You have a super vocal but unfortunately your crutches denied you the opportunity to use your hands, use the stage and perform. Vocally remember to keep focused and not let your tuning wonder… Slipped into an American accent a bit, remember to be unique, creating your own image, click here for finding image as a musician.  

Eva Rose – Good to see you trying with the image which was in-sync with the song, click here for the importance of finding image as a musician. Song was decent and you grew as the performance went on. Good connection between performers! Well written song with a good riff, emotion and passion. This sort of song needs energy so try moving around the stage more! 

Jenna – Good song choice and you made it your own, click here for the importance of song choices. Vocally, it feels like you have a classical twang and correct English, about your diction - you may want to consider, click here for the importance of a singing teacher to achieve the style and progression you desire. Also click here for more ways on how to improve diction. An interesting version of this Cyndi Lauper version! 

Libby Ashford – Strong improvement from the Regional Final, you used the stage well and added some dynamics to drive through the chorus. You have good projection, take care not to push the vocal and risk losing a nice tone. Always worth paying for a professional backing track. A big song to choice, a lot of emotion and passion in this performance, click here for advice on song choices.  

Caitlin – It’s a very popular song choice and hard to impress with it, it at times ran away from you and was too big a song under pressure at this stage of your development, so for those reasons not a good song choice, click here for the importance of song choices. Good expression, just take care not to force the vocal and lose control, click here for more on vocal exercises for singers.

Chloe Dring – Lots of potential, it’s a song that is very challenging to impress as covered quite a lot, click here for more on performing a creative cover as a singer. Expression wise try and not look so nervous and focus on conveying the emotion in the song, click here for how to sing with emotion. A well-controlled and musical performance with a very sparkly image! 

Rhianna Grace – Good expression and you performed the song well. Click here for more on performing with music keyboards. Try and work on bringing more dynamics so it builds to a climatic finish so need to let it breathe to give more in the areas you want to give more impact. A soulful delivery that connected well with your audience. 

Chloe Paige – Super song writing skills, could hear every lyric and the message behind the song. Click here for ideas on bringing more colour and vocal dynamics to the performance. Really liked the catchy chorus. I would pay to attend your concerts! 

Isabella Keeling – Bags of talent, just need to perform, work hard to develop as much as you can. Look to start to write your own songs, click here for getting started with writing a song. Vocally you just need to work on your tuning and projection to be even better! You had a confident start, but the nerves seemed to creep in, despite this you gave good eye contact with your audience and your personality came through. 

Eloise – Sassy start! The song choice felt a little dated and too big for you! Click here for more on selecting the right song choices. Good to see you using the stage. Going forward try and find your own style, click here for more on performing a creative cover as a singer. You have a powerful voice, just need to ease off at times to give more dynamics to your performance. 

Nicole Sherwood – It felt like you connected well with the song, the song would benefit from working the dynamics more; vary the tempo and projection more, let the song breathe to real drive the chorus and hook through. Aiyana – Good to see you take the mic off the stand and work the stage to reach out and connect with the audience. Try and not restrict yourself to one side of the stage, and one section of the audience., click here for stage performance tips for singers. Very polished performance, would love to hear some original material? You gave great expression to your performance, could see loads of feeling within the performance. 

Hollie Gillespie – It’s a very popular song choice and not sure this song best suited the sweeter tone of your vocal, click here for the importance of song choices. Performance wise you really brought some expression look to really practice and perform your expression even more so on point, click here for more on the importance of singing with facial expressions. If you could learn to play stood up you’d be able to bring more energy to the performance. 

Hannah Mackreth – Great connection to a good song! You told the story well. Your vibrato was so well controlled, just try to watch your pitching in the higher ranges. South West and Midlands Singing Competition – 16-20s Feedback

Brandon Hill – Super authentic sound and a strong vocal. Try and reach out more with your eyes to connect more with your audience, click here for the importance of eye contact. A soulful original composition that had some good dynamics and suited your voice. Solid performance, would love to hear more. 

Rhianna Keane – Liked that you made the song your own, click here for more on performing a creative cover as a singer. The piano played superbly gave it a live feel. Liked the dynamic you gave to the performance, click here for more on bringing vocal dynamics to the performance. You have confidence on stage and has good interaction with the audience. You’ve got an impressive range. 

Our Presence – You have good presence and harmonies were well worked. Mic control from some of you was a bit worrying, click here for more on microphone techniques. Vocally you appear to have weak links which let you down a little. It would have benefitted from a better dynamic and climatic finish. Harmony parts were well balanced. Good mix on the track.

Olly Hensby – Lovely mellow sound but need to be more outward with the performance, give us more emotion, convey it in your expression and eye contact. You’ll get better with more live performance. 

Rachael Kennedy – You connected well to the song but would have liked to see you be more creative with the cover to make it your own, click here for more on performing a creative cover as a singer. You have real potential to go far in the music industry.

Zara Jagroo – Good to see you standing up to perform certainly allows you more freedom to move, click here for more on performing with music keyboards. Look to be more animated. Look to bring more dynamic to the performance, click here for more on bringing even more vocal dynamics; look to vary your projection and tempo. Your confidence is strong but more live experience will make this even stronger. Need to work on developing your melodic shape. 

Kadie Jabbie – Your song choice gave you lots of opportunity to work the stage and move more, you should have looked to give us more presence. Vocally vary the dynamic, give us more variation and range, click here for more on stage performance tips for singers. Vocally work on your breathing and projection to be even better. Sloppy ending! Remember to perform to the end.

Alisha Gander – You have ability! Look to work with a singing teacher to improve your pitching and control. Click here for tips on choosing the right singing teacher for you. Also take care with your diction, some of the lyrics sounded sloppy. Remember to sing clearly so your audience can hear every word. This is how they can emotionally connect to you as a performer. Sam Clines – It’s always a worrying one when you say on stage that you write this song a couple of days ago; as it means it hasn’t been tried and tested to an audience and most songs take time to mature with the experience of performing them live. Having said that you smashed it!! Look to reach out and connect with your audience with better eye contact. Click here for the importance of eye contact

Rebecca Leigh – You picked a very popular song, this is difficult as you will always be compared to the original. Look to choose a song that you can bring a spin to as an artist, and show us your originality. Click here for performing a creative cover as a singer. Start to find your own style as you have a terrific vocal. Click here for tips on finding an image as a musician. You have great projection, but you can’t just rely on that, you need to perform and use that stage. Click here for stage performance tips for singers.

Sofi Robinson – Great use of song. You have a good turn of vocal to bring a good dynamics to the performance. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Regarding your facial expressions, look to give us more variation not just pain and sorrow; try and jump on the optimism and hope which you aren’t conveying at present. Sophie Morris – Vocally you are a bit nasally, try and work on your vocal technique. A singing teacher will be able to assist you with your vocal technique. Click here for choosing the right singing teacher for you. Be careful of your mic control, make sure you bring the microphone close to your lips to maximise projection. Ollie Smith – You have a great tone. A real committed performance, which you threw yourself into. Song choice and dynamics made it tail off a little, look to perfect these. Darshae McKenzie – You have a great look and a real presence on stage. Song has a lot of potential but look to breathe in places to give more impact for the chorus. Sophie Sutton – You have a big personality that comes across in your singing. You have a super tone, look to structure the song to give more impact to the chorus and lyrics. The diction wasn’t so clear, we couldn’t hear a number of your lyrics. This is crucial with connecting the audience. Click here for tips on how to improve diction. You have a great voice. 

Maria – You committed well but struggled a little with pitch; you have ability, look to work with a singing teacher to improve your pitching and control. Click here for tips on choosing the right singing teacher for you. With the pitch issues, be sure to support them with your breathing. Click here for breath control exercises – these will help manage your breathing technique. Don’t sacrifice control for power.

Becky Birch – You have a terrific vocal! Now back it up with more of a performance; more expression and more movement on stage. We need to see masses of emotion and passion in your performance, this will be more engaging for your audience. Remi Bleu – Super vocals and you commanded the stage well with good presence. Commit even more to those sultry moves. Good expression and interpretation, click here for tips on singing with facial expressions. Loved your image, it goes well with your attitude – you have an artist brand ready to be marketable! Sophia Leuca – Loved your tone! It was difficult to see who you are as an artist, we didn’t see any  originality from you. Look to choose a song that you can bring you own spin to as an artist. Click here for more on performing a creative cover as a singer. At times your vocals were all on the same level, look to vary your vocal dynamics, this will be more engaging for your audience. Gii Dhi – Loved how colourful you dressed! It was refreshing to see such a unique image. Click here for finding image as a musician. Performance wise, you kept pacing four steps to the right and left… it needs to have more of a strategy and be a rehearsed performance. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. You have a very old sounding voice, we loved this. Your one to watch!

Lucy Stanton – You have a super vocal! Your song choice felt slightly dated. Click here for the importance of song choices. You owned the stage and performed very well. Well done. 

Pete Morgan – You’re a confident performer! Good commitment but try to hold off at subtle points. Let it breathe a little it, this can give far more impact to the hook and/or chorus. Click here for tips on writing a song. Some of your notes were slightly out of tune, you need to slow down a little as it felt a little rushed. Reece McConnell – Great smooth performance. Loved your vocal range and texture that you gave in the performance. The song really suited you! Albeit we would like to hear something more original, we feel you have more to offer. South West and Midlands Singing Competition – 21 and Over’s Feedback

Daniel Gates – Very talented musician and songwriter. You have a lot of confidence on stage! You have richness in your vocal and in your lyrics. Watch your expression as sometimes you aren’t conveying the exact emotion and it can come across a little cheesy. Click here for tips on singing with facial expressions. Andra – You have a good voice, and have some potential. Its ok to start seated but it prevented you performing and moving around, which you did eventually do. Have a think about doing this from beginning, or standing up earlier. Click here for stage performance tips for singers.  You have a super tone but at times you vocal came across a little thin, look to work on developing your projection and range to really climb into the vocal.  Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help strengthen your vocals. 

Megan Taper – You have a powerful voice, and you performed the song well! Liked you made the song into a mash up to show your creativity! Click here for song mashups. Key work was tidy but we would have liked to have had a more dynamic to vary the performance. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. You have a lot of confidence and ability, well done Megan. 

Farrell Cowson – Good song choice! It was great to see you perform an acoustic version and make it your own. Click here for performing a creative cover as a singer. Take care with your expression when straining on the top notes sometimes you loose the emotion that your trying to convey. Click here for tips on singing with facial expressions. You have a powerful voice and you delivered the song with real confidence. You have the potential to go far!

Tata – You have a strong voice. Brave song choice, ideally we would like to hear you sing something more creative. You sing extremely high, try and work on your dynamics, this will offer a greater variety in your vocals. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Jonny Olley – A good performance Jonny! Your facial expression is connecting us to your performance, try and reach out more using your eyes to portray the emotions in the song. You will improve with more practise and live performances. 

Georgia Bunn – You have a good voice Georgia. It’s a very emotional song, you need to give it the degree of sensitivity that the song deserves. Click here for tips on being able to sing with emotion. Look to use the stage more and give more of a presence on stage! Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Good finish to give a climatic ending. With some extra training you will have potential. 

Mark Howard – Effortless in sustaining the notes, you have a silky soulful vocal. Look to develop your stage craft, use that stage more and try and express the emotion in the song by using your arms and body. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. More depth of dynamics would have kept us wanting more till the very end! Click here for tips on vocal dynamics

Jane H – Loved the song! Really catchy and haunting! Great to see the look back to see a good connection between performers. Click here for tips on singing in a group. Have a think about using more of the stage during your performance, this will be more engaging for your audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. You have a very good voice and you performed the song well.

Harmony Duo – Great mash up! However there were probably too many songs as this prevented the smooth transitions a mash up should have. Click here for tips on song mashups. Harmonies were great and your vocals compliment each other very well, take care not to go too low on occasions. Vary up your dynamics to show a greater vocal range. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. You have potential to go far in the music industry.  

Jamie Connolly – Playing along to a backing track sounds crowded at best. Look to play acoustic or in a band as we feel this is where your most comfortable. Click here for tips on using a music instrumental. More performance will breed confidence from you! Be sure to practise and perform as much as you can. You did perform the song well and we enjoyed your stage presence. 

Fay Bromley – Great projection and tone, use the power sparingly otherwise you lose the overall effect. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. You have a strong voice and a lot of ability, you will go far. Your confidence on stage is admirable! 

Dan O’Connor – Soul style! Song has lots of potential - just work the arrangement and dynamics a little more to drive the chorus and hook through even more. Click here for tips on vocal dynamics. Be sure to use more eye contact, this is the best way of communicating the emotions to your audience. Click here for the importance of eye contact.

Grace Parry – Song is a good one, catchy, lots of life and good lyrics. You worked the stage well to really connect to the audience. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. The rap section was good but perhaps a little out of synch for what you are wearing and styled. Click here for tips on act image and synchronisation. Overall a good an entertaining performance, well done Grace. 

Patricia – You have a great voice and have confidence on stage. The trouble with sitting down as it restricts your movement so it was good when you got up from the chair. Lovely vocal but the song needed a little reworking it didn’t seem to grab you with an instant hook. Click here for tips on writing a song. You have a lot of ability and your interactive skills with the audience were good. 

Ashanti – A very brave performance! You have a super vocal, great power and you could feel the passion. Try and be as creative as you can with the performance. Click here for stage performance tips for singers. Be sure to practise more and perform as many live performances as you can to get better. 

Kate Fenwick – Good choice of cover, great to hear something we don’t normally hear. Click here for performing a creative cover as a singer. Try and reach out to the audience with your eyes to connect us even more to your performance. Click here for the importance of eye contact.. You performed well and in character. Your vocals were good, make sure to keep performing to get your consistency right every time. 

Cadenza – Great to see you theme your costume to be in sync with each other. Would be good for you to develop a more coordinated performance to back up your wonderful vocals. Click here for tips on singing in a group. We weren’t too sure on the song choice, have a think about what best flaunts your vocals. It was a very entertaining performance, you all have great voices. 

Bella – A powerful voice and excellent stage confidence/presence. Have a think about your song choice, choose something that you can bring your own spin to as an artist, and show us your originality. Click here for performing a creative cover as a singer. You have the ability to go far Bella! 

Komposa, Mic D & Jack C – Great flow and vibe. Song is catchy and one that many can relate too, try and focus on a main hook line “These are the days we live for.” Click here for tips on writing a song. Great energy between performers! Just how it’s done! It was great to see something different and refreshing. 

Saliana – Watch your vocal control, at times you are forcing the vocal at the cost of losing control. Click here for vocal exercises for singers – these will help control your vocals. Would have been nice to see more of a creative cover from you, we want to see more of your originality as an artist. Click here for performing a creative cover as a singer. You need more variety to bring it to the next level!

Dean Hall – Well done for carrying on despite the mic stand, this showed confidence! You lacked a little originality. Choose a song that you can bring your own spin to as an artist, click here for performing a creative cover as a singer. You will get better with training and regular live performances.

Carl Fisher – Great to see that you had so much fun! Vocally watch your breathing, this was distracting at times. Click here for breath control exercises – these will help manage your breathing techniques. Your vocals need more training to take it to the next level. Your charisma is admiring, keep having fun!

All singers and songwriters successful through the South West and Midlands Singing Competition progressed onto the next stage of the competition at the Grand Final Showcase which will be held at The NEC Birmingham on Saturday 28th January!
