Southampton Music Competition – Under 16’s Feedback
Amber Foxley- Good confident performance and a committed performance with good use of your hands. Look to watch you mic control. Click here for more on microphone technique for singers. As a performance you should have taken the mic off the stand and worked that stage as the song gives you the movement.
DIA – Song choice is everything and this is a very big song especially if you haven’t been vocally 100%. Click here for the importance of song choice. You have a super tone but you pushed the vocal too hard with the song choice and being ill which meant you lost control at times.
Ruth Elizabeth – Great talent and to be writing such well-structured songs is fantastic. Vocally though I think you could develop your projection and range to be even better. Expression wise you need to paint the story of the song in your face so look to develop in that area too, click here for more tips on singing with facial expressions.
Matlinda - You have a very unique and memorable vocal style with great control. Try to work on your breathe technique and control to really reach your full potential, a good article for your to read would be breath control exercises. You are a captivating singer and have great stage presence.
Kyle Music – Good swagger and movement with your performance. When moving just watch your movement as don’t want to lose your power and projection. Liked you made the cover your own click here for more on performing a creative cover. Click here for tips on audience patricipation.
Annabel – The tone and the texture of your vocal is silky. The song is extremely catchy and you have bags of talent. Need to work the dynamics for that big dynamic finish to a fantastic emotive performance. You delivered the song really well conveying the emotion in the lyrics and connecting to the audience. You have great stage presence and confidence but be careful with you microphone control to not distort those lovely vocals. Click here for more on microphone technique for singers.
Heidi Harries – Lovely rasp to your vocal and you wrapped your vocal round the notes with real caress. The song choice was a good one for the sweeter sounding tone in your range. Going forward look to work the dynamics to give us that big finish with a lead to a big push on projection and energy for the finale, click here for more on singing dynamics.
Sophie – It’s a huge song and iconic singer to try to be as good as, it is also very difficult to put your own spin on the track to make it your own. Click here for the importance of song choice, also click here for more on performing a creative cover. Remember to perform throughout, especially in the instrumental sections, use the opportunity to express the emotion in the song.
Katie Otu – You would gain a lot more projection by holding the microphone as close to your mouth as possible, they can always turn your vocal down but having it too far away will lose projection and clarity, click here for more on microphone technique for singers. Vocally you have good tone but you pushed the vocal too hard and lost control, worth considering song choice to not put your vocal under such pressure until such time as you develop your vocal that bit more.
Licia - You have a very powerful, soulful voice with great diction which you controlled well with a nice tone and range. However, this perhaps wasn't the best song choice for your to really show off your voice, click here for the importance of song choice. Great stage performance and confidence throughout your performance.
Stephanie – Felt a good song for you to select but commit even more to the performance and work that stage even harder. Click here for tips on performing on stage for singers. Great image and style, try to connect more to the lyrics that you are singing, this will help bring more emotion to your performance as a whole.
Isaac Sutton – Good to see you writing about issues close to your heart and in a way using it in such a positive way. Song is well structured and catchy. With your facial expression, also consider the lighter and more optistic aspects of the song and not just the pain, click here for more tips on singing with facial expressions.
Lauren Spencer – You have good power in your vocal and bags of character in your tone. Working the dynamics may lead to a more impressive performance, click here for more on bringing more dynamics to a performance. Also look to commit even more to the performance to convey that emotion within the song.
Shalamar B – You have good power in your vocal and climb into the notes with great transition. Look to develop and construct the performance of the song to climax with a finale along with greater variation as to when to focus pushing the vocal. Great energy on stage, a very confident performance.
Little Harmonics – Such a creative cover can it really be called a cover? as it is really an original song. Click here for more on performing a creative cover. As a duo look to vary your harmonies more. Harmonies were spot on, timing wise just could have been more varied so that they were sweeter sounding on the ear.
Archie McKeown – Liked that you made it original with a good sound, created by cupping your hands, good dynamics and a strong vocal. Commit more to the performance and use that stage. Click here for tips on performing on stage for singers.
Southampton Music Competition Feedback - 16-20
Zara Jagroo – Strong songwriting and playing. Just take care not to look down too much at the keys. Also would pay to look through this article performing with music keysboards as you need to develop and give us more movement and conveying of the emotion of the song through body movements, posture and facial expression.
Emily Welch – Look to commit more to the performance felt like you were holding back from letting go. Use the stage more as you were too static, click here for tips on performing on stage for singers. More performance and watching back through videos of your performances will hopefully develop your posture and body actions to convey the emotion of the song better.
Frankie Day – Your hair really makes you stand out, click here for more on act image and synchronisation and how it can be hugely beneficial to you. Performance wise look to move that stage more, click here for tips on performing on stage for singers. Great voice and a very confident performance.
Chelsea Lane – Lovely singing and the song has lots of emotion but you aren’t conveying any of that emotion in the performance with your posture, body language and facial expression, click here for more tips on singing with facial expressions. You need to be able connect more to the emotion in the song.
Victoria Bass –This is Bond sequel! Strong vocals and power which you delivered well and confidently. As a song it’s a little repetitive repeating the chorus a couple of times too many. Perhaps worth working in another verse, breakdown or something to make it more balanced. Click here for more tips on song structures for singers.
Joe Mongan – As an acoustic artist you need to be writing your own songs and developing your own style click here for more on writing lyrics - getting started and click here for tips on how to write that killer song chorus. Second section doing Tinie Tempah worked better click here for more on performing song mashups. You have the ability so, look to develop the songwriting to create and make more opportunities as a performer and artist.
Sound of Eden – Impressive original song which was well crafted. Image wise you were well styled, click here for more on act image and synchronisation. Lovely harmonies, look to be more confident in your performances and try to engage a little more with the audianece, click herer for more on audience engagement.
Southampton Music Competition – 21 and Over Feedback
Sean Parker – Crisp vocals! Keyword was exceptional! More eye contact please Sean, you need to look and reach out to your audience to connect us even more to the music. A good article for you to read will be performing with music keysboards . You need to be more animated and give us more expression.
Hollie & Charlie – Vocally strong and your harmonies tight. Think more than just vocals, think performance and what you are doing on stage, click here for tips on performing on stage for singers. Try to coordinate more Image wise, click here for more on act image and synchronisation.
Elaine McLaughlin – You created a lovely vibe, brilliant backing on the cello, some great plucking to give it a real catchy hook combined with the haunting vocal superb!
Robyn Grace – You have a super vocal! Performance wise need to be more animated and give us more movement which the song does allow you. More performance would hopefully build confidence for you to really commit to the performance. Click here for tips on performing on stage for singers
Cat Jones –Interestingly your vocal sounds similar to Jimmy Somerville which is great. Love the backing but you really need to develop a performance as you are very static. Click here for tips on performing on stage for singers The Music is cool but the image, music and performance Is not in synch. You need to develop giving us more expression, click here for more tips on singing with facial expressions. Full marks for trying something different and creating a unique sound.
Rob Nicholl – Strong tone but very much an impression; think about writing your own songs! It will open up so many doors and of course you can still do covers. Click here for tips on writing lyrics - getting started. Great personality and a real likeability factor.
Danni Jackson – This is cool and you can see this song, if fully produced, really taking different shape. Love the way the lyrics build the song. Just take care vocally so that you can sustain all the notes rather than go lazy on them. Great use of the stage throughout your performance.
