Southampton Singing Competition – Under 16’s Feedback
Fliss – You clearly have a lot of power in your vocal, but watch that control and avoid pushing out the notes too hard. Click here for vocal exercises for singers. The performance also needs to come from the eyes, so would look to develop that to be even better, click here for more on singing with facial expressions. You need to feel the song more and express the emotion of what you are singing.
Stephanie – Nice song choice which you connected well emotionally too. Performance wise, look to use that stage more and the front of the stage in particular to connect even more to the audience. Also look to use your eyes more to again connect even more to the audience. Take care not to force the vocal and lose the control. You have a very classy image and looked fabulous on stage. Click here for help with building stage confidence for singers.
Underscore – As a vocal group, you need to work on the harmonies. Currently you are singing the same parts or taking turns and the idea is to build vocal depth and harmonies. Also as a group it’s important your image is in sync. You need to work on developing your tuning to be even better, which a good vocal coach will be able to easily develop. Here are some tips on duos and groups.
Ruth Elizabeth – Liked your styling, you looked cool. The song was also a good one, a bit left field and different from what we normally hear. Look to commit more to the performance, in particular the facial expression and eyes, click here for more on singing with facial expressions. Potentially standing up allows for more of a performance than sitting. Very unique though, so well done.
Talluliah Tilt – You made a very good first impression with a very controlled and rich vocal. You have loads of potential with a lot of power to your vocal. You could project even more if you got closer to the microphone. Click here for more tips on better microphone technique for singers. More performance will build your stage craft to be even better, but a very good overall performance, well done.
Licia – Loved that you made the song your own, it was a very original interpretation. Good commitment to the song, just take care not to force the vocal and lose control. A very enjoyable performance, your song choice was very strong and unique.
Lauren Spencer – Loved the song choice, great one for this competition, it's a big song but one you can play around with. You connected well and committed to the performance. You just need to be careful as there were a couple of pitching issues at times, but that was probably just down to the nerves as you are a capable singer.
Southampton Singing Competition Feedback
Katie Otu – You have a super tone and vocal control. Perhaps look to develop your facial expressions, which with more performance will help you devlop. Also if you film yourself singing you can analyse your expressions too, click here for more on singing with facial expressions. It felt a little rushed at times, so try and slow down and take your time, but nonetheless, a great performance.
Sophie – You have a lovely tone beyond your years. Remember to use that stage and not force the vocal too hard. A lovely performance but more control is needed at times, which a coach will be able to help with, click here more on the importance of singing lessons and here for more on breath control exercises.
Emiley Hinton – Remember to use that stage, your stage confidence will grow the more you perform, but click here for more on stage performance tips for singers. You have nice tone but just watch your breathing and don’t push the vocal at the expense of loosing control. It came across quite shouty at times so please watch this, you need to project rather than shout, click here for more on how to achieve better vocal projection.
Heidi Harries – You have a lovely rich vocal and you performed the song well. Good attitude and confidence portrayed which worked well for the song. Amazing stage presence and you have potential to go far in this competition.
Barnaby Harrison – Well done for kicking off the show! Unfortunately you started in the wrong key, it was a bit too low which made it a struggle to get back on track. Liked that you took the mic off the stand and used the stage. You have good stage presence and a really likable personality, but you need to work on your tuning to be more consistent. Working with a good vocal coach will be able to help you with this, so click here for advice on the importance of singing lessons.
16-20 Feedback from the Southampton Singing Competition
Chelsea Lane – It was great to hear a mashup, click here for more on performing song mashups. Good eye contact with your audience throughout. You have a great vocal range and power in your vocal; just take care with you mic control with your release from your mouth. Click here for more on microphone technique for singers. Also try and take care with your facial expressions as they are coming across quite harsh at times, click here for more on singing with facial expressions.
Abi and Jake – The performers felt quite unconnected until you took the mic off the stand, so try and connect more with one another. More performances will make your performance tighter. Vocally it felt like you were forcing it too much and losing control at times. Also click here for tips on audience engagement.
James Molyneux-Watson – A very confident performance and delivery, however you were a bit inconsistent at times, sustaining some of the notes well but just going off the tail on others. You have lots of potential with good tone and range, just try and iron out some of your vibrato pitching issues in your falsetto notes.
Southampton Singing Competition – 21 and Over Feedback
Roxanne Phillips – You have a sweet tone and tell the story of the song well. Not sure about the switch in the songs in the middle the song, click here for more on performing song mashups. Try and not talk so much especially when it only relates personally to just your supporters which risks alienating the rest of the audience. Nice versatile vocals and a good stage presence throughout.
Kelly Everitt – You gave a nice live feel with the guitar backing who’s playing sounded sweet. Vocally you have a lovely tone and great volume to your vocal you just need to put a modern twist on the song and make it your own. Click here for more on performing a creative cover. One of the best vocals of the day!
Sorcha Whelan – You’ve picked an iconic singer to try and out do or match, which is often really hard to compete with. Having said that you did connect well to the song. Liked that you mashed up the songs together, clever work and that worked well. Beautiful voice and you really thought about your stage image which showed. Click here for more on performing song mashups.
Alex Cull – Loved the idea to slow down the Tears for Fears song, great idea and it really works. It however started very nervy and there was a hint of that throughout, click here for more on building stage confidence for singers. More performances will help to build up your confidence. Vocal pitch and key may have been affected by the style of delivery and individuality of the song, but that can be worked on.
Robyn Grace – You committed well to this great pop song. Remember to perform throughout the performance, including the instrumental sections and try not to loose stage presence. Your vocal delivery was very strong and you owned the stage. The heavy bass in the track was too heavy for your voice, and it over powered some of your vocals.
Elaine McLaughlin – Loved the cello! It always gives such a fantastic vibe to any song. This was a performance that left you in a magical spell, with beautiful clarity and haunting melodies. This song sounds like a hit already! Try and give a little more personality to the performance and connect with one another whilst on stage, click here for tips on duos and groups. A brilliant performance, well done!
Ashley Sheath – We’ve heard that song a lot over the last couple of years, so it’s difficult offering something new when performing it, especially when everyone does the same version. You have lovely vocal tone but the nerves got the better of you at the beginning of the performance. When you got further into it we started hearing what you can do. You need to watch your pitching and interact more with the judges and also the crowd. Click here for advise on the importance of song choice and for more on performing a creative cover.
Steve C – Your stage presence was confident, and we could tell you enjoyed it! You could have looked up a lot more and some connection with the audience would have been good. It was a little too much like a pub singer performance; you need to be writing your own songs to impress both audience and judges, or just a killer unique vocal. Look to perform in the instrumental sections too.
