7 Tips That Will Quickly Improve Your Singing Voice

Regardless of your singing ability, you may be pleased to hear that there are numerous tried and tested methods, which you can implement today, that will quickly improve your singing voice — without breaking the bank. Below are some of our favourites.

#1 Practice scales using Solfège

Singing the song, “Do Re Mi,” from the Sound of Music may feel silly, but it is actually the musical equivalent of learning your alphabet. The notes are designed to help train your ear to recognise them as you sing.

Singing this simple scale: “Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do”, starting from a C note, is a great way to improve your relative pitch.

When you’re confident with this, try singing ‘up two’ and ‘down one’ (as shown in the image below).

Sing slowly and deliberately and strive for accuracy of pitch rather than speed.

Solfège, can improve your pitch, your ability to carry harmonies and make ‘sight-singing’ and songwriting more manageable.

#2 Record yourself

Recording yourself singing can do wonders for your voice.

You could record yourself singing scales, as above, or you could choose a song that you just enjoy singing and have some fun. Having the lyrics in front of you may help.

To get started, set up a voice recorder and sing the song from start to finish. As tempting as it might be to pause the recording every time you slip up, try not to; you’re bound to make mistakes. Focus more on your singing than being lyrically and pitch perfect — that will come in time.

Once you’re done, listen to the recording with a constructively critical ear. Try to focus on the parts that you got right as well as those you didn’t. Listen to the original again and pinpoint areas for improvement.

Then, repeat!

Archiving your recordings and visiting them later will help you to measure your progress.

#3 Eat and drink mindfully

What you eat and drink can have an impact on your ability to hold a tune.

Your vocal chords need to be warm, relaxed and lubricated to perform to their full potential.

As a rule, drink warm or room temperature liquids (avoid hot or cold drinks). Herbal teas are also helpful, as is warm water and honey. Onion syrup is also an industry secret.

Avoid dairy, citrus fruits, caffeine and alcohol before singing.

#4 Warm up thoroughly

When you sing, various parts of your body are working out, therefore warm-ups can help you to prepare.

Warming up will aid relaxation and stretch out your vocal chords in preparation for a singing session. The best way to warm up is to do a mixture of breathing and singing exercises, gradually increasing your volume and range.

#5 Practice breathing exercises

Breathing incorrectly is one of the most common mistakes singers make and, luckily, one of the easiest to rectify.

Breathing correctly — deeply and from the stomach — can make all the difference to the strength of your voice.

As described above, singing is a workout and should be treated as such: with time and effort your ability to breathe deeply will develop.

When breathing to sing you should feel your stomach and back (around your kidneys) inflate. To help concentrate your breath into these areas, try putting your hands around your waist as you breathe; you should feel your hands expand with each breath.

If you find this difficult, try lying down. When you inhale, your hands should rise; when you exhale, your hands should lower.

#6 Relaxation

Once your ‘singing muscles’ are warm, and you are sure that you are breathing well, it’s important to relax.

Tension in your body or face will have a negative impact on your tone and resonance. Less air can flow over your vocal chords if your muscles are tight.

If you get particularly nervous before a performance, visualisations or meditation may be helpful.

#7 Sing often

Finally, the most important trick for improving your singing voice? …Practise frequently!

Singing regularly (aiming to improve over time) will help your voice to develop, so sing often and have fun!
