Best Romantic Songs — The Top 10

Looking for a Valentine’s Day playlist? Maybe your significant other/chocolates/wine aren’t quite doing it for you this year? From Adele to Sam Smith, here’s our list of the top modern romantic songs to make you melt!

Top Love 10 Songs

When it comes to a great love song, lyrics that you can connect with are key. They need to capture the feeling of what it is to be in love, and we’ve highlighted our favourites below.

#1 Ed Sheeran: Perfect

Ed Sheeran wrote this lovely ballad about his then-girlfriend (now fiance), Cherry Seaborn. It reached number one in the UK Singles Charts in December 2017, with the lyrics:

“Baby, I’m dancing in the dark with you between my arms / Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favourite song / When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath / But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonight”

Inspired by a moment he shared with Cherry in Ibiza.

#2 Ellie Goulding: How Long Will I Love You

This sultry cover from Ellie Goulding’s 2013 album Halcyon Days features some of the most romantic lyrics:

“How long will I love you / As long as stars are above you / And longer if I may”

#3 Adele: Make You Feel My Love

Another excellent cover (the original by Bob Dylan will also make you cry) this is now considered an Adele classic and not many people even know that it’s not written by her. Favourite lyrics include:

“I could hold you / For a million years / To make you feel my love”

#4 The Lumineers: Ho Hey

Do you believe in soulmates and true love? Not only is this song incredibly catchy, but it’s also got the sweetest, simplest lyrics:

“I belong with you / You belong with me / You’re my sweetheart”

#5 John Legend: All of Me

Soft and romantic, John Legend wrote this beautiful piano ballad for his future wife Chrissy Teigen. With these lyrics guaranteed to make you swoon:

“Love your curves and all your edges / All your perfect imperfections”

#6 Lana Del Rey: Love

Lana Del Rey has a way of capturing the feelings of youth and first love like nobody else:

“It doesn’t matter if I’m not enough / For the future or the things to come / ‘Cause I’m young and in love/ I’m young and in love”

#7 Bruno Mars: Just the Way You Are

Massively popular at weddings, this Bruno Mars classic is so relatable because we all just want to be loved for who we are!

“And when you smile / The whole world stops and stares for awhile / Cause you’re amazing / Just the way you are”

#8 Taylor Swift: Love Story

Over 10 years ago, a hopelessly romantic teenage Taylor Swift wrote this song about a complicated relationship with a boy.

“Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone / I’ll be waiting, all that’s left to do is run / You’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess / It’s a love story, baby just say yes”

#9 Sam Smith: Latch (Acoustic)

The original is more well-known, but the acoustic version makes you appreciate the beautiful lyrics:

“You, you enchant me, even when you’re not around / If there are boundaries, I will try to knock them down / I’m latching on babe / Now I know what I have found”

#10 Francis and the Lights: May I Have This Dance feat. Chance The Rapper

Songwriter Aaron says that the week the song was written, was the week he proposed to his now-wife.

“May I have this dance? To make it up to you / Can I say something crazy? I love you”

These are the songs that will have our eyes welling up and make our heart skipping a beat, but what do you think?

Do you have a favourite love song? Have you written one yourself? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

This is a great article and would just like to say I too have written what people may consider a love song called ‘When You Fall’ off my new EP ‘Picture Frames’. It’s all about when your partner is feeling down or sad or in pain, you feel it too but when they are happy or excited you are too. It’s all about sharing everything together.
