How to prepare for an audition

Preparation is key for anything and an audition is no different. Once you have chosen your song, it’s important that you sit down and practice it until you are happy and feel like you’re giving it your best shot.

Make sure that you are confident with your choice of song and that you know all the words. Put something into your performance – practice moving around the room so the judges get a feel for how confident you are as a performer.

Also make sure that you have at least one or two other song choices in case the judges ask you to sing something else, and make sure you have rehearsed all the songs well enough and that you have remembered all the words.

Try performing in front of your friends and family if you like – they might be able to give you some more tips to add to your performance. If you are nervous, it will also help with your confidence levels if you can practice in front of an audience first, no matter who it is.

Before the audition

Carry out some simple warm up exercises to make sure that your voice is ready. Have a good healthy breakfast, nothing too salty that might dry your voice out and make sure it’s lubricated with lots of water.

Make sure you’ve had enough rest the night before. Get an early night as being well rested will enable you to perform at your best and will give the judges a true glimpse of who you really are and will help your talent to shine through.

Once you are happy with your preparation take some deep breaths – you might feel nervous but that is perfectly normal. Just believe in yourself – and if you make a mistake during the audition, soldier on. Take a deep breath, compose yourself and carry on. The judges are more likely to send you through if they can see you’ve got that positive mental attitude and don’t give up.

Song choice for beginners

Why does song choice matter?

How many times have you watched someone’s audition on a talent show and thought the song choice didn’t suit their voice? It happens quite often and you don’t want to be that artist. The judges can tell straight away if the song doesn’t suit the artist.

Make sure you understand the type of voice that you have whether it’s a tenor, a soprano or a mezzo-soprano. This will help you to nail that song choice and pick the one that suits you best.

Why does song choice matter?

Song choice also helps you to gain a better understanding of your voice, the type of artist you want to be and the genre of music that you want to sing.

This is a task that requires a lot of your time and attention so make sure you do it properly. You need to feel confident and happy with your selection of songs. Spend some time trying out different songs and seeing which one suits you best.

It’s also vitally important to make sure that you pick a song you enjoy singing. If you don’t really enjoy singing it and you’ve just chosen it because you think it suits your voice, the judges will pick up on it from your performance.

Have fun with it, after all, if singing is what you want to do for the rest of your life, this shouldn’t be seen as a chore. You should embrace it and enjoy all the extra practice.
